Let me tell you some of the most boring as gently caress guard duty is standing guard in the secondary exit of the ship's brig for 4 loving hours with a Mossberg just staring at a locked gate and the shower/poo poo area of the brig because there's 10 or so pirates in your brig.

Nevermind that there was like 0 ventilation in the ship's brig and the pirates smelled like loving poo poo, like the smell was in their loving skin because they hadn't showered for months.

I spent so much time in that brig entrance that I can still remember how the area looked 10 years later.

Were you doing this on the Big E because I spent some time with the guys who took our pirates away and I still don't know who smelled worse.

Yeah they were allowed to shower, guarded of course but no we didn't spray them with a fire hose or any dumb poo poo like that, we actually followed proper procedures for treating detainees, and even gave them actual medical care (a couple got shot, and 1 got stabbed in the boarding iirc, i don't think stabby boy made it) because these guys were going back to the States to face federal criminal charges for piracy. We treated them nice because we we're positive that anything we did that was off the mark would wind up in court against us.

Yeah that was those guys.

The fun thing was 3 or 4 of the pirates had active symptoms of TB, so we all had to get retested afterwards to make sure we hadn't contracted it.

Boarding team, I mean the boarding team was a bunch of DEVGRU dudes in one of their SWCC fastboat things (this happened pretty close to shore, we intercepted the boat as it was trying to flee to Somalia so they could offload hostages and hold them for ransom, so they're lucky they weren't all just killed on the spot. I'd imagine if the SEALs had known that there were no living hostages aboard the boat when they boarded they would have just smoked the lot of them. Knifeboi got a Ka-Bar in the neck for trying to ambush one of the boarding team.

Yeah we basically body-blocked the boat with a CVN and her escorting DDGs. I think there were 2 DDGs there along with us, and we were basically spending all day trying to make the pirates existence hell on the yacht to get them to surrender. Shooting laser dazzlers off the bridge glass, pointing those neat focused noise makers/loudspeakers at the yacht and broadcasting an alternation of telling them to surrender in Somali, Arabic, and just broadcasting irritating tones at night so they couldn't sleep. Once they realized that there was no chance in hell of us leaving them to their devices, I think a scuffle broke out on board over what to do, and an RPG was fired at one of our DDGs, and then there was a bunch of gunshots below deck (them shooting the hostages). The SEALs boarded as fast as they could but poo poo was all over by then. A couple pirates got shot, and one got knifed, and the rest surrendered when they realized that they were likely to all die if they tried to resist.

poo poo was hosed. One of those things I'm gonna remember forever.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SY_Quest_incident

quote:

According to American reports, the SY Quest was captured on 18 February 2011 at 13.23 UTC by nineteen pirates in a mothership, 190 to 240 miles off the coast of Oman at approximately 18°00′N 61°02′E in the Indian Ocean. Pirates then tried sailing the SY Quest towards Puntland. Sometime thereafter the Enterprise, the guided missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf and the guided missile destroyers USS Sterett and USS Bulkeley were sent to the area and arrived several days later on or about 21 February. Captain Dee Mewbourne, of the Enterprise, then proceeded with opening negotiations with the pirates, at which time two Somalis went aboard the Sterett. On the following morning, 22 February, while negotiations were still taking place, a pirate aboard the SY Quest fired a rocket propelled grenade at the Sterett from 600 yards away but it missed. Almost immediately afterward gunfire was heard aboard the yacht so a boarding party was sent in on a raft and they boarded the SY Quest. A brief skirmish occurred resulting in the deaths of two pirates, one by rifle fire and the other by a combat knife. Thirteen pirates surrendered in the process and were taken into custody. After boarding, the American navy personnel discovered Phyllis Macay and Robert Riggle, of Seattle, Washington and the SY Quest's owners, Jean and Scott Adam of Marina del Rey, California.

All four of the captives had been wounded by gunfire so navy air crew members attempted to provide medical assistance but were unsuccessful. The bodies of two other pirates were also found aboard the SY Quest though United States Navy officials had no explanation for their deaths. Vice Admiral Mark I. Fox, issued a statement a few days later saying that the American forces involved had no intention of attacking but were obligated after hearing small arms fire.

The pirate leader Mohamud, in Somalia, claimed that the hostages were killed because the American warships started to attack and he told Reuters that "we ordered our comrades to kill the four Americans before they got killed." The leader Farah, in Bayla, Puntland also spoke with Reuters over the telephone and said "I lost the money I invested and my comrades. No forgiveness for the Americans. Revenge. Our business will go on", adding that he had spent $110,000 on food, weapons and salaries for the highjacking. Thirteen of the pirates were found to be Somalis and the other a Yemeni; they were sent to Norfolk, Virginia to face charges of piracy and kidnapping.

The three captured Somalis, Mohamud Salad Ali, Mohamud Hirs Issa Ali and Ali Abdi Mohamed, pleaded guilty in a US court.

On 8 July 2013 Ahmed Muse Salad, a/k/a “Afmagalo,” 27, Abukar Osman Beyle, 33, and Shani Nurani Shiekh Abrar, 31–those who actually killed the 4 hostages–were found guilty of piracy, murder within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, violence against maritime navigation, conspiracy to commit violence against maritime navigation resulting in death, kidnapping resulting in death, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, hostage taking resulting in death, conspiracy to commit hostage taking resulting in death and multiple firearms offenses.[8] All three were sentenced in November 2013 and all received 21 life sentences, 19 consecutive life sentences and 2 concurrent life sentences, and 30 years consecutive.

According to U.S. federal law, committing piracy has a mandatory life sentence.

As of May 2015 Salad, Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP)#77991-083, is held in USP Victorville. Beyle, BOP#77988-083, is held in Tucson USP. Abrar, BOP#77993-083, is held at Florence - High USP.

My bad I thought we were off the coast of Somalia, it was Oman.

Also one of the few times I've heard Enterprise run up to flank speed when it pulled a 180 after receiving the orders to respond. Holy hell the ship sounded like it was going to come apart from the massive cavitation off the propellers.

That weird blend of b.o. and cologne you so often encounter in the Middle East is still one of the most nauseating smells I've ever experienced. I think it's actually worse than straight b.o.

About to have to wear khakis for the first time in a year and I can see the soles starting to crack. Prepping for a bates blowout, I’m thinking I’d like to spend some extra to get something that won’t disintegrate sitting in my closet. I’ve heard of some model of Florsheim or Allen Edmonds that look similar, but I’m hesitant to buy if there’s a chance it’ll look off.

I wound up ordering those. The amazon reviews for the one I got are mostly people saying they got them after a Bates blowout and they look pretty close. Got them for 85 off the Florsheim site so basically the same cost as a pair of Bates anyways.

Not brown, but I got a pair of Mephisto's from some shoe store in the Lynnwood Mall in Washington that have held up for 10 years. Super comfortable and very much not Bates. Wore them on watch for probably 3 years. They've got a brown version but I'm not familiar with the tint so I can't say if they are close or not:

I mean when you throw away a uniform you're supposed to mutilate it to prevent it from being used to impersonate a military member but that always struck me as a bit weird since you can get a full up uniform from a surplus store. Who the gently caress knows but you'll probably have someone who is a nosy bastard report your rear end regardless of legality.
