Basically, Sega was confident that 3d was a gimmick and fully-polygonal games were still another console generation away, so they put all their effort into making a console that would beat the Super Nintendo's sprite based graphics. Then Sony dropped the previews for the games they were working on for their new console and everybody panicked. They ended up bolting on extra chips that the system wasn't optimized for and rushed it out the door to try and get ahead of the PlayStation, and actually ended up alienating a lot of their third-party developers who had already been working on games that were supposed to be launch titles.

That's a pretty common rumor but I thought it turned out that the Saturn really had been built from the ground up as a 3D capable machine, they just underestimated how hard/unappealing it would be to program for.

That's like when Sony went with that crazy cell processor for the PS3. Developers don't want to have to learn an entire new architecture when they were making multi platform games. Just make it an X86 PC or whatever.

The Saturn used Quads/Squares instead of Triangles on top of it all.

Between Sony hitting the market earlier than Sega, and the lower price point they managed to accrue a large enough userbase that the PlayStation version of a game would be the obvious choice to develop for first. Since the Saturn hardware was so different on a fundamental level it ended up being an absolute nightmare to port games to.

They had to code in Assembly or something for the first little while, until Sega sent the kits out.

A PC accelerator was released using a similar chip (or possibly leftover stock of the same exact one) and could theoretically have taken off with enough support. It was a question of momentum at that point, but the momentum was strongly in favor of triangles because it was always going to scale better.

I have seen every single BigClive video. He is a treasure that the world does not deserve. His knowledge of esoteric circuits and shortcuts, along with his soothing voice and sense of humor (and willingness to publish his designs for free), are sublime. In comparison, EEVBlog is whiny and acts really entitled for some reason. Even though his knowledge is vast, my entertainment life has been significantly happier and more upbeat since I've cut out his constant whining and pessimism from it. Clickspring is also glorious, and I go into withdrawals the moment I finish watching his latest video. I sometimes put on the clock build playlist and just let it run in the background.

I've been watching LGR since sometime in 2010. I think the first video I saw was the one where he demonstrates the Monkey Island theme on a bunch of different sound cards / devices. Somebody had posted it on the Mixnmojo blog. He's consistently great. I do wish he'd do more game reviews like he used to. Tech Tales is what's making him the most money apparently, but I like game reviews better. That said the last one about the robot was loving gold. I will say that Clint does do a way better job of research than 99% of YouTube people. There's a genre of YouTube nowadays that consists of just reading Wikipedia almost verbatim. The guy who does Lore does or at least did that early on and it got him $10k on Patreon a month and an Amazon series. In one of his early episodes he accidentally reported somebody's creepypasta and didn't bother to even put a disclaimer on the episode later. The stuff he read off as fact was dubious as gently caress too. Clint will actually go to a library and load up some microfiche when he's in pursuit of something. How do you think they divvy up the money on a MJR video where there's a bunch of them on it?

Say what you will about the Sega Saturday Graphics, the audio filtering and process internals was so overdone that the person that cracked it recently said he wants to make an audio mixer for it because it does some strange and wonderful stuff to audio. For example you could make a filter that does something with an audio stream then you can tell that result to go to another filter and then even back to the first filter and it does it does it so fast and cleanly the value of that ability would be almost like a Korg or Moog device.

I stopped watching 8-bit guy after the weird "I could totally do an AI and it's a government conspiracy that we don't have it yet" video, he apparently later took down and got all prissy because people told him it was poo poo. EEVBlog goes in the same garbage bin with thunderf00t of annoying-voiced strangely entitled-sounding people that are smart but not nearly as smart as they think themselves. I've lately taken to watching RetroManCave. He's a bit annoying at first and has Guru Larry guest once in a while, but he does do some solid videos and has a more British/European outlook than LGR.

I haven't watched an 8-Bit Guy video in months for whatever reason. I was watching Ross' Game Dungeon a while back but his output slowed down after a serious mold colony attacked his apartment and he had to make plans to GTFO of there. He's a bit of a goofy guy but his stuff is excellent.

Gggmanlives does some stuff well but falls back in trying to impress edgelord types too often. Like when he reviewed alt-right Doom mods and said they weren't anything you should take seriously, unless you're a whiney SJW. Well it's now 2018 and the term has been so abused to hell and back that anyone who doesn't like Nazis might as well be an SJW. A couple if weeks ago he ranked Wolfenstein: TNC second worst in the series because of its cinematics being too long which could be a valid point if he hadn't then complained about the "weird political message".
