I’ve been following some ambient/shoegaze-y guys on instagram, they’ve been doing some really interesting stuff with cassettes and reverb, slowing things way down - not sure if that’s the route I want to go exactly, but leaning towards a setup for minimalist/ambient stuff. I really like the Vapor Trail delay pedal for that exact sound. Usually I'll just turn the spring reverb on my twin reverb way the gently caress up, chain they delay, wah, my BD-2, and my Big Muff up to it and click the BD2 on during solo/lead bits. I really like the milky "daze-y" sound. Here's a really crappy song I made a few years ago as an example. Trip report: the Rev 2 is everything I'd hoped for, between the 3 envelopes, 4 LFOs, and 8 mod matrix slots, it's a modulation monster that can drat near do anything my eurorack setup can, except with 16 fuckin voices of polyphony.The first patch I made from scratch was this huge, thick organ-like lead that becomes unusably thick if you turn on unison at all, even if it's just 2-voice unison, and at 16 voice unison with a bit of detune, it's just a dense, thick wall that you can't even hack through with a machete. The second patch I made from scratch is just an insane modulationfest, doing things like using one LFO to modulate the waveshape of one osc on sawtooth, then using a second LFO to modulate the first LFO's rate, resulting in chaos like this: https://soundcloud.com/user-984973587/spacewarz/s-xzzXV That's the result of turning on the arp and setting it to latch, hitting a chord, and then just recording the output. It's one thing to have a couple LFOs, it's another to have 64 free-running, non-synced LFOs spread over 16 voices. It's ridiculous and I love it. One other thing, it takes a looooooong time to run the calibration routine when you've got that many voices:  I remember self-calibration taking like 20 secs tops on my old Matrix-6 (only other synth I've owned that had a self-calibration routine); this thing takes a minute or two, since it calibrates each individual osc (32 total) over 10 octaves each, plus the 16 filters.

Say what you will about how good/bad the sound of Dave Smith’s modern synths are, he’s still the only other synth maker as influential as Bob Moog was, and still setting trends for other manufacturers to follow, including, apparently, Moog themselves now.

You can catch glimpses of some of the scenes they've built if you scrub through the various trade show demos, but they've been pretty cagey about the tools for that stuff and what you'll be able to do with it.

I'll have an ambient track on one track 1 (of a tape), a high pitched single note on track 2, a lower harmonized note on track 3, and some weird (usually slowed down) drums on track 4. That way I can mix in different stuff in while I'm switching tracks or something on my MPC (e.g. beats to play an intro with my synth, ambient weirdness with some effects, or use the tape speed to play notes along with the MPC beat). I also use this, and another tape player to make super slowed down samples, because they sound really cool copied through tapes a few times (super broken and warbley). It's also just a great way to record music. I hate using computers, so I was recording a ton of music on mine before I switched over to my sampler.

The exception is maybe if you’re a classically trained keyboardist and you know you’ll get good use out of a $4k Nord or something like that. Especially if it’s a piece of gear that you aren’t familiar with or experienced using in your workflow. It’s easy to fall in love with an instrument by reading a ton of forum posts and watching YouTube videos or spending half an hour dicking around in a Guitar Center. And then you get it home and decide you’re getting 20% as much fun and utility out of it as you imagined or the workflow doesn’t make any sense to you. The last thing you want to do is owe 10 months’ worth of payments on something that sits in a gig bag and collects dust or that you’d be happier flipping on Craigslist, even if the payments themselves are relatively small and you’ve got all the money set aside/could easily pay it off immediately. If your income stream or financial responsibilities change suddenly, and you’re in a place where every dollar counts, having a couple hundred tied up in a piece of hobby kit becomes a real pain in the rear end at best and an additional source of stress at worst.

Anyone have any youtube recommendations for synth sound design tutorials that don't devolve into dubstep bullshit? I know synth sound design, but I like listening to people go through presets. A lot of the time, however, it's all about grungy, chopped up wobbles and stuff like that, and I'd love to hear some more stuff that's far away from that. Dulcet tones. Not Skrillex electronic audio aneurysms. Anyone? Torley used to do Project Preset, but he hadn't touched that in a long time.

I'm on the fence about mine too. It's cool and great but more machine than I'll likely ever need, I'm thinking an Impact is more along the lines of what I actually want in a drum machine. So yeah... there may be two on offer soon.
