Well let's make a list:
1)he asked all revenue above 400k€ annually to be taxed at 100%.
2)he asked all revenue above 400k€ annually to be taxed at 100%.
3)he asked all revenue above 400k€ annually to be taxed at 100%.
"That loving facist!" was the overall reaction.

It's complicated.
For starters he's not the wokest dude out there by far. Like, of course he's all "we've got a humanitarian duty towards migrants" which is (in this day and age) pretty cool and sympathetic towards Palestine and elementary leftist stuff. But on the other hand he's definitely pretty weak on social justice issues.

The worst thing about him is his attachment to the concept of the nation, and how we should be proud of our country and stuff like that. Of course in his mind France is this revolutionary country with a vibrant leftist history and social conquests and stuff, which is not totally untrue, and he's not an apologist for the French colonialist period. But it's easy to conflate that weird leftist patriotism and nationalism. Also, he used to poo poo all over regional and community identities because "France is one and indivisible" and French people should mostly feel French above any other identities and, well, gently caress your Diwan schools and regional languages. He's toned it down somewhat but still.

He dislikes Islam, but only in the sense that he dislikes every religion (and he's pretty open about that and it's pretty obvious that most of his contempt is directed towards the catholic Church). He's pretty patronizing about specific stuff like the Islamic veil, though, in a "no, but this is what muslim women mean when they wear their veil, and they shouldn't" way.

quote:

(I think he also strangely cozied up to Putin and some other unsavoury characters so in conclusion Hamon should have won but Melenchon was only a mixed bag not Turbohitler).
He's not buddies with Putin, but he has this weird line that goes "we gotta keep a strong relationship with Russia, let's not do anything to antagonize them". In general I'd say he's not very forceful when it comes to autocratic regimes. Like back in '08 he was all like "Yeah but Tibet is Chinese and China is indivisible and what if the Chinese came and told us that Bretagne should be independant?". In general his advisers in re: international affairs are pretty bad but to be fair I can't think of anyone who has a moral and credible and well thought-out foreign policy

edit: also lol at his dumb support for Maduro

Sorry for quoting a post from a thousand years ago but I don't have regular Internet where I'm working, when did he calm down on that? I know members of his party were still painfully stupid on that as of earlier this year.

I really miss teaching in Diwan schools, even setting aside the whole regional language thing the schools' internal culture and pedagogy was really, really great to work in. If only they could afford to pay more than starvation wages, by which I mean slightly less than a state teacher who's had the CRPE makes.

I will be honest, it's just regular jacobinism, everything is a stealth thread to destroy french unity. And it's not going to go anywhere.
Just be happy you didn't end up on the guillotine for "helping a reactionary school actively working on destroying the republic". :france:

I know it's just jacobinism and that the main French parties will be jacobin until the Sun burns out, I was just curious if Mélenchon had softened his personal stance at all. I really want to like him but ugh.

I didn't the guillotine for it but I did get told I couldn't stay in France anymore for pretty much that reason which invalidated all the work I'd done the previous 7 years (5 of them being studies at university) of my life and hosed me over pretty well. Le pays des droits de l'homme indeed.

Well I hadn't heard him talk about it much during the campaign so I assumed that this particular kind of jacobinism had been discreetly shelved but that stuff you just posted is far more recent and Corbière is a footsoldier for Mélenchon so ugh, thanks for disabusing me of that notion

In that was vein, there was also the thing last year where he (and the rest of LFI) rebuffed an LFI députée because she defended the concept of having workshops closed to non-white folk to talk about racism.

quote:

Yeah that's basically what I meant by "weak on social justice issues". The party movement is very old-white-dude in its approach to these issues. But he's getting slowly better, I was actually quite surprised that his rebuke wasn't really a rebuke, more like a "we don't think the same thing on this topic but that's not something that's going to drive us apart"

Not just me then; I genuinely assumed that I was wrong in thinking that it's spelled débarass and I was too embarrassed to look it up.

Years ago, I had a professor in grad school from Montpelier who spelled it mêre for some reason. I was 99% sure that he was wrong - after all, we all make mistakes - but on the tiny, tiny chance that I was misremembering it took me nearly 10 minutes to point it out. I couldn't bring myself to contradict a Frenchman with a PhD even though I was sure beyond a reasonable doubt that he'd just made a silly mistake.
