It's amazing how the movie is both a campy recreation of silver age Spider-Man and a time capsule of the immediate post 9/11 era.

The real best thing from Raimi's films was Cliff Robertson as Uncle Ben. No other Ben has come close.

Dick Cheney is an evil as hell gently caress that gave no shits and enjoyed being evil so his buddies, companies, along with Bush and Oil people, could profit over war and dead people in Iraq. There's articles out about how Cheney fought against any documentation being released in 2001 after 9/11 that spoke about communication/maps of dividing up Iraq's oil fields.

Bale setting up his wig in American Hustle is really uncomfortable to watch and seems to go on for 10 minutes although it's probably much shorter.

I think Alfred Molina as Doc Ock is my favourite comic book movie villain. It's him, Dafoe as Osborn, Timothy Dalton in Rocketeer and Al Pacino as Big Boy in Dick Tracy.

It reminds me of that one description of Faye Dunaway's performance in Mommie Dearest; they don't chew the scenery, they start at one corner of it and then swallow it whole.

Yeah, there is a real charm to Ice Pirates. To me it kind of occupies that same sci fi space as Barbarella or Fifth Element, goofy sci fi epic that is both futuristic and an outright slavish dedication to the time it was made.

Nah, it rules except for some dodgy compositing and 16-year old CGI. Heaven forbid a campy movie actually have campy aesthetics.

I watched Fifth Element the other day, and it is a lot saucier than I remembered, what with Milla Jovovich taking her shirt off a bunch of times and everybody turning around to let her get dressed in the background.

Compared to that, Ice Pirates has a lengthy scene of Space Errol Flynn making out with his princess in a capsule that simulates several stormy seas, child me didn't know where to put his face.

I'm not really making a point here, except maybe that Ice Pirates is closer to Barbarella than Fifth Element. And even then I'm not really sure, because as far as I remember Barbarella has quite a few angels and whatnot, Ice Pirates seems a bit more "hard" sci fi compared to that.

Green Goblin in Spider-Man is like Mr Freeze in Batman and Robin, being able to fill a YouTube compilation with his funny moments doesn't make up for the other two hours of the movie not being anywhere near as good or campy.

His Power Rangers costume still kicks rear end though. I remember people complaining that he wore a mask instead of having an actual goblin face when he transformed but considering how poorly the rest of the movies effects have aged can you.imagine how bad a cackling cartoon/puppet goblin face would look?

Except every scene with J Jonah Jameson, Bone Saw, Aunt May, Ben Parker, the costume design montage, and the first suit-up scene also rule, dude. I'm not even going to get into the part where he's discovering his powers and becomes Peter Parker, Jizz Fiend.

I think part of it is the cinematography. There's more than a few shots in that clip which feel a little too amateur somehow. Lighting? Angles? I just can't figure it out.

It's like Sam Raimi's filming style was developed to compensate for working cheaply and taking advantage of poor special effects, rather than highlighting a glossy "We have a nine digit budget and CGI, we can do whatever we want!" effects-forward approach.

It’s lit flat to maintain the 60s comic book color scheme which has th effect of making the locations look like sets. However, looking like a set is cool

No need to imagine.

Personally I think it looks terrific and would totally fit in with a weird Raimi campiness and holds up way better than the film's mask. But I know some folks who saw this and hated it as well, so
