Schwarzwald posted:Standard definition, but on blu-ray? Is that common? For old shows with no HD version it happens sometimes, you can fit more episodes on a disc and you're not missing out because, well, there's no HD version. It'll probably still look generally better than on DVD as well. Sucks if they're doing that for Ideon though since there is a HD remaster.

I like Fafner and I'm glad it's not dead, even if it means more suffering because Heaven and Earth was the happiest place to end it yet it kept going.

Droyer posted:I'm glad we're getting a continuation considering how Exodus ended. Oh, absolutely. Exodus was too depressing an end to leave it there, even for Fafner. It was also by far the most "yes, we're continuing from here" ending of the series too, considering it leaves the Tatsumiya Island residents with one big mission, recover said island alongside the people left behind, beyond the usual "get humanity and Festum to live together despite the latter getting more and more aggresive every season" which seems it'll never actually happen beyond specific cases like Misao and a couple of Mirs.

I wouldn't call Fafner depressing really. It has sad parts sure but it's always been a very hopeful story about making things better for the future. The prequel OVA is exempt from this though.

I started on the wrong part of Fafner and it seemed alright, but it got cross-contaminated by watching Aldnoah at the same time and I just stopped both at once. I suppose I never gave it a proper shot, but for a show with such stylish mechs at first glance they sure don't make much of a unique character out of each one, just a big purple spikey blob spamming beams at nondescript yellow things. I started to wonder if all the mechs except the MC's were white or monocolor+white to make the gunpla cheaper.

They never made any models of Fafner so that seems unlikely.

Relin posted:which getter robo manga are the best to read Getter Robo Go is the best, easily. Shin Getter Robo is also quite good, but it relies on you having read Go first for context and doesn't stand as well on it's own. Getter Robo Arc asks a lot of questions that sadly won't be answered, and it is it's more difficult to recommend. It's still has trippy art and some wild ideas, though. The original Getter Robo... really isn't that good. The first volume is solid, but it isn't able to maintain that level of quality past that. There are a few scenes that stand out, but there scattered pretty thinly, and most of what it does well Go does better. Schwarzwald fucked around with this message at 07:27 on Aug 30, 2018 |

Gonna second Go being the best of the Getter manga. Tbh its the only that I'd say even really works (Though Arc probably would have had it been finished).

The original manga isn't even that long, and even if it isn't impressive it's definitely still very readable, same goes for G, and then you have Go which is great, and Shin and Arc which are pretty good too. Getter Robo not having a proper ending is so sad. Has anyone read the spinoff by the Linebarrels people, Devolution? How was/is it?

I feel like I'm an odd man out in that I really enjoy the various Getter OVAs but straight up dislike the manga. I guess they just concentrate on the elements I like while excising the stuff I think is boring? Not to mention Jun Kawagoe is a slick as hell action director who doesn't get nearly enough work in the industry.

I think the way the ovas pluck individual moments from the manga and insert them into a new context with different characters is a lot of what makes them so fun. The manga versions of the characters are pretty one dimensional until Go so you get to see your favorite moments played out with interpretations of the characters that are at their most complete or memorable form.

Blaze Dragon posted:Yeah, this. Besides, it's a series, you shouldn't randomly start from one part, best as it may be. Getter Robo isn't really a single series, and as such I'd recommend starting at Getter Robo Go, because it effectively is the start of it's series. (Which continues in Shin and Arc.) Go presupposes no real knowledge of the previous manga of it's audience, and you don't really need any going in beyond what you can pick up. In fact, the most relevant details aren't actually in the earlier manga, but happen after it's conclusion. I genuinely think the more satisfying approach is to go back to the original manga afterwards. The original Getter Robo iss fun in spots but nothing in it is pertinent to the later stories.

I'm not sure if it's because I read up to its current chapter while highly sleep-deprived or it's just that nonsensical, but Devolution deals very heavily in multiverse theory and after a certain point it just goes completely off the rails with that poo poo. It's essentially the Linebarrels duo's take on the origins of Getter Emperor; there are a couple neat ideas but I don't think you're truly missing anything if you give it a pass, in its current form. Shimoguchi does some real cool stuff regardless.

I watched ARIEL (All Round Intercept & Escort Lady). It wasn't bad. Not amazing, but it had some good comedy and some OK action. It's an adaptation of volume 4 of a 20 volume book series, so it's not really a proper story, it's just some things happening in the lives of the characters, based around a giant robot lady. One aspect I really liked was that the aliens who want to conquer earth are on a strict budget, and there's a manager there to make sure they don't commit too many monsters to a single attack, it was great. What makes ARIEL noteworthy is that I absolutely guarantee you the people who made Evangelion were big ARIEL fans. There's a ton of proto-Eva elements in it, the teen pilot who doesn't want to get in the robot but is constantly pushed by her grandfather, the robot is modeled after the designer's dead wife, there's a long exposition scene on one of those big platform elevators that goes underground at an angle. There's an entire episode based around SCEBAI, the organization that runs the robot, preparing for a thing from space to come at the city, with lots of fantastic 80s shots of big machines being maneuvered into place and connecting and powering up, negotiating with the power company to blackout Tokyo so they have enough power for the device, etc. ARIEL isn't bad. If you're hankering for some 80s mecha with lots of greebly machines and blinking lights and floofy hair, or just want to see something that had a massive influence on Evangelion, give it a try!

I've heard of that ARIEL show but I hadn't heard of it being an influence on Eva before. Tracking the different things that (Probably) influenced Eva/Anno in general has been a side project for me the last several years so I'll have to check it out whenever I'm out of VOTOMS-land. I fell a little behind on it for a few days but VOTOMS continues to be good btw.

I just couldn't care about the war at all. A war fought between two identical countries you can only tell part by the decorations on their lapels, fighting a war that is exclusively almost identical robots shooting at each other in featureless desert canyons. I think the war was over quartz, one of the countries had more quartz than the other. But yeah Borcuse, and also literally all of the secondary characters, were better and more interesting than the main characters. The main characters all being nice but rather boring people who went to high school together so they didn't actually want to fight or really accomplish anything other than not killing anybody.
