I’ve been playing a bit now that the new stuff is in but don’t have much to report yet other than that the concrete change is good.

I got to a point pretty early in my at-launch run where there was nothing to do but prepare for “more” colonists. I was stable and growing steadily and just waiting on techs to make stuff more efficient while I moved one-two spaceships full of people at a time to slowly expand without angering Malthus. My late-game event was marsgate which was deeply disappointing, so I just kinda quit playing. Is the game better about staving off lategame boredom or are there mods to help with that, or should I wait to come back in maybe another 6 months?

I jumped on to try some challenges only to find:

A) all challenges have set companies and backgrounds
B) there’s no info AT ALL in the scenario selection on what those companies and backgrounds do, so if you haven’t played enough to have memorized them there’s no good indication of how difficult the challenges are
C) Most of the challenges seem to have high levels of dust devils, because apparently “break poo poo randomly” is still the dev’s favorite mechanic

:sigh: I really want to like this game, but the devs seem to have a very different idea of fun than I do.

I haven't played this game since launch. Are renegades still an issue? As in no way to get rid of them, or convert them back to normal?

Is it possible to shift them to a dome for undesirables, and then cut off the air supply? I've never had renegades or idiot gurus - legit asking.

OwlFancier

Probably but I generally just put idiots in the farming dome, you can't break farms however much you try.

Doesn't increasing comfort get rid of them? Or can security stations?

On its face, this expansion looks like a sort of 4x conversion, with "rival colonies," trading, and the like. Could be neat.

I think high comfort prevents them from ever showing up, which is probably why I've never seen them.

Insanite
Aug 30, 2005

Could be. All I remember is building a 'renegade' dome during some mystery that left me with a ton of them, plopping a couple of security stations in it, making it comfy, and they eventually went away.

Then again, they might've all died while I was paying attention to other stuff.

/shrug

e: And it might be morale rather than comfort.

No, it's a pre-purchase. It doesn't say when it will unlock.

But yes, occasionally I am known to smash.
I'm absurdly excited about shopping malls and alternate rocket models. :woop:

I perfected the Housing Bubble challenge (fill 4 living quarters by Sol 13 or so), although it came down to the wire because of an ill-timed dust storm. But it was fun and quick and made me think outside my slow-growth comfort zone, so thumbs up.

It looks like they're doing the paradox thing of splitting the DLC into gameplay, music and cosmetic packs. So Space Race is the gameplay, Marsvision Song Contest is a new radio station and the Colony Design Set adds 25 new buildings. It's not clear if the new buildings add new gameplay or are just different sizes of existing ones. You get them all if you have the season pass though.

WARNING! INTRUDERS DETECTED

I got this and I've been playing it for eight hours over the past few days, I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm looking at my Baby's First Base layout and already thinking up ways I could do it all so much better if I started from scratch, which is a good sign for a city building game.

I've been reading back through the Da Vinci and Sagan patch notes and it's baffling how many obvious, sensible things only got introduced in those last two patches. Basically I think the game's finally in the kind of state it should've probably been at launch.

I can’t see how new buildings and new sizes wouldn’t be new gameplay since it adds new possibilities for dome layouts. Maybe they’re just cosmetic, to add more flavor to sponsors?

Well, it looks like there's going to be at least one new building, because they just tweeted a picture of some sort of cathedral spire:

Fine print in Space Race is a new building per sponsor. Those likely have new stats or do special things.

Colony Design Set is probably a set of models for existing buildings, it even talks about sprucing up your Sterling Gens and Spacebars. Taking in the Paradox model it'd be weird if there were mechanical differences.

OwlFancier

Which is kind of odd to go to the effort of modelling new buildings to not add any new numbers to them.

They said in one of the videos they've uploaded that they're including 3-hex versions of factories and one-hex shops amongst the other new buildings. I'm pretty psyched!

Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

Since when could you put solar panels inside domes!? That's kinda awesome: protects them from dust storms at the cost of valuable real estate

You could always do it, not that there is much reason to do it, just spending metal on maintenance is probably going to be easier than building a dome for a ton of resources and paying oxygen/water/plastic upkeep

I'm doing the church so I'm on a shoestring, and it's a very high sandstorm risk area so putting a few inside does wonders.

I didn't know that either, and yeah totally a basic dome full of solars is gonna be way cheaper to maintain even with a bit more water/oxygen cost. Especially seems like a good use for the microdomes.

Can you put batteries inside too? Does it reduce their polymer use? What about Stirlings?

Other than annoying warnings, does a dome with no residents need water or oxygen?

I'm not sure if it will stop working properly if you don't connect it, or just turn the dome off. But it's possible yes you might just be able to do that.

I thought renegades eventually turned back into normal citizens if an officer arrested them, like how Tropico handles criminals. Was I wrong?

alternatively yeah, putting them in one dome and turning off the air like frigging Kohagen from Total Recall would work.

I suppose technically yeah if you build a dome but don’t connect it or turn it on it still protects the panels from dust... I guess?

Doesn't the self cleaning solar panels achievement deal with dust accumulation?

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

It reduces it but doesn't eliminate it, and it's a bit late on, whereas you could definitely spare some extra resources to build some poo poo tier domes early on if it cuts your metal upkeep.

Tribo scrubbers still eliminate all maintenence costs if you overlap them.
