ED: Also (I suspect because it was based on a real, horrible person) the racist Kathy Bates character arc was one of the most disappointing things in Coven to me. I loved the idea that through crazy hosed up circumstances that she'd end up with an actual redemption arc, because it was pretty bold to do that with a terrible person. The last minute 'Nope just kidding still evil, never gonna change!' ruined what could have been one of the most unique and interesting things about Coven. Like I said though it being based on a real person half makes me think it was pressured decision and not necessarily the original intent.

At least we'll always have..

I get why they didn't, and completely agree with their decision to not rehabilitate her. I also agree it would have been a good turn, but they would have had to make up a fictional character instead of using the real, historical figure. For someone as terrible as the ~real person~ was, even rehabilitating them in fiction is a kind of (literal) white-washing of history that should definitely be avoided.

They did say the bunker used to be a boys school, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the same place. Presumably Langdon leads the molemen out into the light. Or he kills all the witches and all the warlocks. Either way the school becomes vacant.

Then at some point in the following three years they fill the place with a 16 month supply of food cubes, and an infinite supply of candles. So many candles. Down to half a meal a day, but still no shortage of candles. Leave dozens of candles burning in empty rooms, sure, why not? We got plenty. Did anyone check to see if these candles are edible?

Yep, I kind of get it too, which is why I think it's a shame they used a real person (and got called on it). It made for a lovely resolution to that arc, because it was a really neat rarely seen story up to like 2 episodes before the finale taking someone like that and having them befriend Queenie and change as a person. As someone who can separate the real person from a fictional accounting - I mean she was about as realistic as Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter - I really wanted her to end up like spending immortality atoning as a changed person.

I guess the resolution made the whole arc seem like a waste and it was a really well done arc, a sort of ultra-twisted message of hope that stood out.

If she had some clever plan to come back from the dead all along it'd undo a gripe I had with Coven in that her willingly getting roasted was out of character and dumb as gently caress. Like I really hope it's a flashback to her pulling a total long con and burning a golem or using some phoenix magic or something.

AHS has always mixed in some real life characters into the story, and I never really liked that. It always felt forced and awkward in my opinion. Asylum had the best take on this, as it was doubtful if the character was who she claimed to be or just delusional.

From the top of my head:
Murder house: the Black Dahlia Elizabeth Short
Asylum: Anne Frank
Coven: Delphine LaLaurie, Axeman of New Orleans, Marie Laveau etc
Freak Show: Edward Mordrake
Hotel: besides James March obviously being based on H.H. Holmes there was the serial killer dinner party with Aileen Wuornos, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Richard Ramirez and Zodiac.
Roanoke: well, the Roanoke settlers, obviously
Cult: Valerie Solanas and Zodiac again

Looks to me like these two episodes (4 and next week's) are a two-parter with flashbacks to the witch school side of things, where we'll get explanations for what happened to the Warlocks, at least a cameo from Misty, and an explanation for Myrtle's appearance, and another for why Taissa Farmiga isn't around in the present anymore. (She's probably dead though.)

So I imagine that the Murder House explanations are the next thing coming down the line after they get past all of that.

Just wanna say: Kathy Bates has always been a great actress, but she's absolutely killing her role this season. You can absolutely buy that she's an incredibly strong woman, from the way she holds herself I can absolutely believe that Mead is the kind of military killer the script calls for her to be. But she's also projecting this incredibly lonely, and I think vulnerable presence, like in scenes with adult Michael, or when she lets herself get bossed around by that butcher. The script throws these seeming contradictions at her, and the way Bates lets you track her emotional journey is really good, really thoughtful acting.

Even that scene in the carpark where she's shouting like a crazy person, it should just be, you know, standard boiler plate irony stuff. Crazy woman isn't actually crazy, successfully predicts end times. But I think it ends up being grounded in something legitimately emotional, so the scene ends up being just resonant enough that I, at least, ended up feeling quite spooked by her. (An experience that's honestly pretty rare in AHS.)

But yeah, the way she alternates between seeming powerful and being powerless is masterful, just really impressive stuff.

Edit: Someone else who's just killing it in an incredibly small part is BD Wong. He's the least prominent of the four warlocks -- I think he has, maybe ten lines? -- but he's giving this fully realised character. He'd be an excellent addition to the show moving into future seasons.

Kathy Bates is a Hollywood legend. AHS landing her was arguably a way bigger deal than Angela Bassett or Jessica Lange. She's done so many different roles in her filmography that she could rival Gary Oldman.
