This is hardly some super serious thread with strict guidelines on what you are and aren't allowed to make fun of. No reason to take it so seriously. Besides if someone finds something new to add to their library as a result then hey, let no one say these forums never did anything for anyone.

Yo, this thread has never been about posting illegal games on Steam. It's not 'look, Valve allowed this game to be released and they said *starts pissing his pants* they wouldn't *suffocates from laughing too hard*'. It's 'look at what's funny about this amusingly terrible game on Steam, let's mock it'. That's it, sometimes it will be a small terrible thing, sometimes it will be big, sometimes there will be a derail, sometimes an entry will miss the purpose of the thread. I don't give a poo poo about Valve actually embracing those titles and giving them the best bear asses in the business yearly award, it's not a factor. Post more hilariously terrible games on Steam and laugh at them, nothing's changed in that regard since page 1.

My only actual concern with these low-effort hentai puzzlers is that most of them are surely using other people's art without their permission. Like this kinda approach can't be legal, right?

The way they describe it, it almost sounds like they have some sort of insane algorithm that just trawls the entire web and is able to identify porn by analysis, specifically hentai, which would be incredible technology. I know it's probably actually just trawling specific websites where people post hentai artwork, but I find the idea funnier that someone came up with this amazing image recognition technology and figured the best use of it was for a lovely "solve puzzles for nudes" porn game.

Probably using sites which already have tagging systems.

^ You'd just have to program to search anime image sites with tags like "nude" or "sex". The technology already exists for robots to find their anime porn, worry not.

Kanfy posted:Anyone can link it or look at it for sure, but can they actually charge money for it? It's certainly no-effort, but it's not a free game. web browsers used to cost money But you're right in that with this game, the majority of the "value" to the purchaser it is from the art. It's not like a web browser that way. So it would be possible to argue that it is a copyright violation. But it's also a transient and pretty trivial one. It's a grey area case that would take actual lawyers and judges. I dunno how that would go, but you're only getting $750 minimum damages for it. Good luck with that.

Klyith posted:web browsers used to cost money The fact that it's all retrieved "on the fly" rather than like pre-loaded in with the download is probably the argument they'd be relying on if someone did take them to court over it. Like if they did include artwork with the actual game data, they'd probably run afoul of "not for commercial use/redistribution" licenses, but since they aren't really redistributing the images, just hotlinking to them in realtime, there are minor technical differences. I mean that all SOUNDS like bullshit but a lot of legal arguments basically boil down to that sort of bullshit so it would really come down to who can afford more lawyers and that's probably not going to be "random internet hentai artist".

It wouldn't be worth the trouble for something that's likely to sink into the garbage pile of obscurity, but if that hotlinking hentai game somehow gets an audience, someone needs to figure out what criteria it uses to find images and then poison the search results with pictures appropriately unsexy and hilarious.
