So have there been 26 medicanes already, or is Zorba the 26th global hurricane, or do they just try to pick the funniest sounding ones for Europe?

I'd have to assume it's the 26th tropical cyclone of the year, worldwide. Mediterranean cyclones don't seem too common, but as the world heats up we'll probably see more.

storms are named by whichever regional weather bureau is in charge where they form, there isn't a single list everyone uses

twoday posted:So have there been 26 medicanes already, or is Zorba the 26th global hurricane, or do they just try to pick the funniest sounding ones for Europe? I suspect it's the latter because they get one in the Mediterranean infrequently compared to the rest of the world, so there isnt really the need for a list of names like you would see in the Atlantic and Pacific (also theres been like 40 named storms between Atlantic and Pacific alone this year so far)

Storm's a comin' https://twitter.com/JeffPorterWX/status/1049680947178815491?s=19 It's gonna hit Apalachicola, an extremely low-lying town surrounded by swampland filled with gators. St. George is a barrier island off the coast that should protect it somewhat. Most of the houses on St. George are on stilts already.

it's also gonna hit tallahassee and knock out 95% of the power grid, again, because they like their trees and canopy roads too much to trim them and I guess also like their money too much to pay to bury the power lines
