Purely offensive strategies? Crash/glitch/subvert(?) traps, crash/subvert grenades, crashbeams, subverters, breaking windows, and for extreme situations, breacher grenades. Of course if you have a sidewinder or something that can allow you to get past guards without fighting, it'll absolutely make things easier.

I'd say even after the patch added in ways to strip armor, 20 armored guards are a harder mission, but they do both require specialized tools for engagements.

The traps are nice since they can work repeatedly. But trying to get through an entire large ship of shielded guards using traps is gonna take a lot more patience than I have. But the jammer trick, there's something I might be able to use.

I feel like armored guard missions are much clearer, you just need to get a weapon that works on them.

My least favorite tactic is just to walk behind a guard, pause, and steal the key. Combine with stealth and key cloners as necessary. More fun but less reliable is blowing additional holes in the ship to get around. How that helps I don’t really know, but bonus points for any guards sucked into the vacuum of space or completely cutting off a portion of the ship full of guards.

If I remember correctly you have to take said given character far enough that they can retire and become a teacher at the Academy. After that, yeah they can train all future characters in it to max for free.

Balrogs are strong for any class that doesn't need wisdom, since they have high stats and, more importantly, bonuses to max hp and to magic device skill. Demigods are pretty good too and all have different unique beneifts (for example Poseidon ancestry lets your melee hits reduce enemy AC, and Hera gives you the 'clear mind' to quickly regen sp that normally only mage-types get).

If you want to play a monster race and just blast everything through the early game try being a Cyberdemon and using your built in "shoot a loving rocket" ability to murder everything. Or for a little more lategame viability, play a Golden Dragon with the breath realm and kill all your foes with really loud yelling sound breath (which also stuns the poo poo out of them). Xorns are really fun but kind of weak -- you get to walk through walls with all the cheese that entails, plus eventually quad-wield weapons. But you have almost no armor slots so you're terribly squishy unless you trade some of your weapon slots for shields.

I think it was nerfed pretty badly but one fun/broken build is a Skillmaster with points in Archery, Create Ammo, and eventually maxed-out Craft magic. Archery on its own is pretty dang strong, but Create Ammo gives you lots of higher-tier hard-to-find ammo like adamantium arrows, and Craft magic lets you enchant and magically brand all of it. You can be murdering everything with +3 arrows and a +3 bow in the starting dungeon, and eventually slaying ancient demons and great wyrms with magically mana-branded adamantium arrows of returning while also buffed to high hell with stoneskin and haste and the ability to walk through walls.

if we're getting into stuff that's stupid powerful but maybe nerfed and probably fiddly to start with then hoooooo boy psions certainly wind up being something, even if getting there is a little weird. Rodent nerfed them but i don't know in what ways, but the one i played was a pure blaster type which is sub-optimal i think, but turns out psions were busted even sub-optimally. Midgame was mostly putting a damage over time effect on enemies and then using phase door powers to blink out of LoS. I killed the phoenix without ever taking damage becaues it simply couldnt be in range for long enough to actually use a breath, it's stupid safe. then in endgame it was just completely absurd, with a spell that gave +30 speed, a spell that gave like 80 SP per turn while active, and an AoE nuke that put debuffs on monsters that were normally immune to them... like the serpent of chaos. My psion's J fight was hilariously easy, since it spent 100% of it confused, heavily dazed, or even asleep as i just mindfucked it over and over.

the early game was kind of weak, but you could take the ridiculous +blows and damage buff spells instead and just punch better than a warrior while still blinking and having max speed or damaging everything in LoS or who knows what psions are silly

e: oh yeah and a healing spell that heals more than healing potions do, with a 0% failrate. what a ridiculous character

The graphical versions been around for a while now but yeah, it can be unfortunately unstable unless you play in ascii mode. For whatever reason noteye just shits the bed sometimes. If it doesn't automagically restore your save, head to your documents folder and hunt down the adom or adom_steam folders and open up savedg and rename the .bak file to a .svg file.

e: unrelated to adom, another important frogcomposband tip i forgot to mention is that Free Action and See Invisible don't work the same way they do in most *bands. Having one pip doesn't make you immune to paralysis/see invis things 100% of the time. You need multiple pips of free action to be totally sure, and multiple pips of see invis helps with seeing invis, and so does having a high perception skill ranking.

Oh yeah warlocks with a giant pact get a lategame ability that does pretty lovely damage but inflicts confusion even on "confusion-immune" enemies including the serpent so you can really abuse the hell out of it.

Their spells are not otherwise too fancy though. IIRC you can spend the early-to-mid game throwing magical boulders at things and then you'll spend the rest of your time just hitting things with melee.

Oh yeah I forgot a Frog thing I was going to mention: Classes to not play because they're bad, wonky, or incredibly tedious for too long.

Do not play warrior-mage or red mage. They're bad at melee AND magic. Red mages in particular can't learn anything from the third and fourth spellbook, and the only consolation is that they can get doublecast at level 50... so they can doublecast spells that have been outdated for a long time.

Necromancer. They're not unplayable, but necromancy spells are just kinda not worth the no gloves and having to touch everything to cast things tradeoff. Just play a mage that uses the death spellbook, or an undead warlock, or a monster lich.

Mirror-masters are loving impossible and i refuse to believe otherwise until I see someone do something other than die at level one trying fruitlessly to blow up goblins without getting killed

High-Mages taking the Hex school. The hex school is a particularly weirdly hacked in (in a game made out of things that are hacked in) spell school from an earlier Japanese variant. All the spell names and descriptions are super unhelpful because they're engrish machine translations, which kind of owns. Unfortunately, the spells themselves Do Not Owns. They've got a bunch of weird things that buff melee or armor, but you're a high mage so you're terrible at melee. Their only damage spells until like level 40 or something terrible are useless against things that resists poison or vampirism, which is most things that you'd want to hurt. It's super disappointing, because the way their spells work is neat since they're toggles that damage everything in LoS but drain mana over time and it's cool to get enough mana regen to sustain them but alas, the class is bad after you clear the orc cave pretty much.

Bard. I think these guys get good at level 40 with the 4th spellbook but until then youve got mediocre spells and melee and it's just not fun. I tried to boost my melee by being a tonberry bard once but my stats were so bad that i wound up getting .4 blows per round and just quit.

Sorcerer. 65% life rating. Casting spells is hard when you die. Essentially a challenge class.

Rage-Mage. I'm not sure entirely what's going on with them but everyone on angband.live spits on them. They're all about like getting hit by spells to cast spells or something, but getting hit by spells is not ideal. To add insult to injury even though their lore is they like get angry at things to death they still are affected by anti-magic. What a ripoff!

Sorceror is fun as heck up until you reach level 30 or so and you realize that to get any further you'll need to actually enter dungeons where enemies have breath attacks.

MIrror-master is also kind of ok. They suck at melee and don't get their first actual attack spell until level 3 which is kind of lovely so you'll need to level up by shooting lice with a sling from the general store. After that they're... ok. They get the super basic bread-and-butter mage tools like teleportation, detection, and a pretty decent multi-enemy-piercing unresistable beam spell, but almost nothing else, so you're like a blaster-caster mage with 1/10th the spell list. Eventually I think they get to do controlled teleports and cast clairvoyance, which are really nice, but also available to regular old mages inside the fourth Sorcery book. At least they don't have to deal with book drop RNG

Handy tip for all players, that.

Still, I've only had crash problems with ADOM when tabbing out into another window or gambling at the Casino. Spam gambling will always cause the game to crash, so switch to ASCII for that level if nothing else.

it's cool and long and the ascii is very readable. it's pretty simple hack and slash stuff for the first bit of game so it's easy to get into and on angband.live there are a bunch of nice people like kobold who will help you out as you fruitlessly search for the last loving warg

also you can play as a sword that eats other swords to get stronger or a samurai who gets to light his sword on fire to hit dudes harder or one of seventy types of dragons that all manage to be decently mechanically distinct from one another

That only works for your primary realm. If you're a mage of armageddon and sorcery you'll get the armageddon books but will still have to rely on loot rng for the sorcery ones. On the bright side, if you somehow do get ahold of Sorcery 4, clairvoyance makes the dark cave a billion times better.

Oh yeah, and unless this bug was fixed Skillmasters don't get guaranteed books for the realms they've chosen to level up. Smaug always gives them the sorcery book, just like he does for warriors.

The combat/deck building is a lot more like card quest, but still it’s own thing. Not focusing on chains you normally only take one action a turn in a sort of initiative system you might also have seen in a JRPG or TRPG. I haven’t bought it, just watched it.

I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far but I’ve heard some things about quantity of content that I take with a pinch of salt. I will say that I’ve seen the same quests pop up, in particular the riddle ones that don’t really benefit from starting over with a different party. That’s more a matter of what you’re expecting from a replay though, and some of the complaints I’ve been seeing seem odd for the genre.

I think you'd only need book 3 of sorcery to poo poo on the dark cave because stair creation can create downstairs in it now. If we wait long enough Gwarl will probably buff red mages and warrior mages. I think he already buffed their failrates but he hasn't done anything big yet, but if he does buff them there's a good chance I can yell at rodent to implement them in Frog too.

e: pro strat is clearly to just make your own fork and buff red mages, as long as you're not playing on angband.live. unfortunately i'm only sure how to make red mage minimum failrates go down to 0% instead of 5%, not make them able to use all the books
