Second season is good, though fair warning the ending is more than a little rushed.

Moribito was very good and the author’s anthropology background could show through the story. Also one of the few animes with a korean influence.

Grancrest was like fragments of a good story. It also seemed to have pulled off an allegory for the Europe’s transition from feudalism into the popular politics of the early modern.

Not really feeling skeleton bookstore after the first episode, but I'll give it another one or two to see if it wins me over.

Edit: What even is Himote House. Is this a Turning Girls for a new generation?

Does this share any staff with Last Period?

The game, Merc Storia, shares its parent with Last Period—both come from the Japanese branch of Chinese-based company, Happy Elements. The animation studios are different. JC Staff did Last Period, while Encourage is doing this one. They're a company that worked on Etotama and some of Sympho S1.

The director for Merc Storia directed Lotte no Omocha and Etotama and storyboarded Symphogear Ep.12. good credits.

Oh, if the reason you're asking is 'why is the style so much like Last Period', then you've got a good eye. Even though the anime char designers and studios are different, both games come from the same artist's designs. Which is kind of amazing honestly—if you look at the art direction for both games, they're different enough that it's hard to tell via color profile and anatomy. Only the faces are similar. Also, the artist has a HUGE fetish for thick thighs which runs rampant in Last Period, but someone clearly told them to draw the Merc Storia characters with less obvious horny. lmao

The ending was fully in keeping with the rest of the series feel, that being a D&D game played by some sincere but disruptive players with a very put upon GM.

As I understand it from skimming the translated transcripts of the actual game sessions a while back, the anime had very little to do with what the advertised writers got up to, aside from having the same names and vaguely the same personalities. Basically just this side of false advertising (like all the works a few years back that claimed "written by Urobuchi" or whatever, and it turned out he'd written like the first episode or so and nothing else).

As for Grancrest... yeah, there were definite pacing problems. It's a work that could have really benefited from more episodes, as quite a few scene transitions were rough, but there's little I feel that could really have been easily cut to add more minutes elsewhere to smooth out those transitions.

Yeah, Grancrest was by no means perfect, but honestly? At first I was hesitant because I felt that it was going to get a treatment similar to SAO, Index or series adapted from LN's and just have the pacing take these glacial steps that take forever to go places. So, while it certainly did go by at quite the clip and could've used 26-to-28 episodes instead of the 24 we got, it did resonate enough with me that I would recommend it. Also, Theo x Siluca are very cute. :kimchi:

The vast majority of 24 episode anime would be better served by being forced down to 18 or 13 episodes.

Behind High Score Girl and continuations of earlier stuff, Angels of Death was easily the next best anime of Summer 2018. Does that work?

The logic, such as it is, seems to be that cities in this setting are heavily-fortified and self-sufficient, so only citykiller monsters really matter. Goblins are dumb and weak enough that they only pose a serious threat to anyone unwise enough to set themselves up outside the city walls, and are mainly just a warm-up before you start taking on the real threats - and the high attrition rate is tolerated because if you get killed by goblins, you wouldn’t even stand a chance against the proper nasties. That’s what puts the protagonist so at odds with everyone else - he’s a villager trying to minimise villager casualties, which requires a totally different approach and set of priorities.

the logic is bunk. They have literal armies of tens of thousands of goblins "appearing" and adventurers go "oh well, guess that village is goblin fodder now". The goblins steal/make a ship in another chapter, INSIDE a city. Plenty of female characters go "oh yeah i've been raped by goblins when i was younger" like it's tea time.

We exterminate wolves and bears for less trouble. This world has another sentient species that can literally only breed through kidnapping and rape, and people treat it like mosquitoes.

If their society is under such constant assault, it would only exist as completely martial, half roman half mongolian... which could in itself be an interesting setting. The idea that it's still an isekai-ish fantasy copypasta is bigger bunk than autists of SAO made a town instead of a brothel is utterly unbelievable. The whole show/manga reminds me of a chapter of Franken Fran about a Kamen Rider that stopped getting boners without vengeance. So he started letting people die on purpose, so he could feel vengeful.

Also Franken Fran is the best porn manga I've ever read. It should never be adapted to anime for any reason.
