Cranky weather guy says that the pink stuff is bad and indicative of really hot surface temperatures. Probably not a good thing.

to the guy who was asking earlier, florence got a lot more attention because the part of north carolina it was going to annihilate was pretty well-off (and mostly white)

michael is going to delete a lovely and poor part of florida so the mainstream media doesn't care

I've been a WX nerd for around 20 years but I work in data science and journalism so I'm not going to go all "oh poo poo everyone is hosed and here's my landfall prediction" -- but what just happened around 20 minutes ago is less than optimal in terms of this thing slowing down even a little. Water temps are between 81 and 85. Unless it magically decides to replace an eye wall right before landfall, it looks pitted to just increase in intensity until it hits.

That being said, 2am NHC hits in a second.

It's going to be weird when there's a six foot deep big, hot ocean surface, with all the abandoned buildings sticking out of it, covering the lower two-thirds of Florida

You know, I'm pretty sure the mound building native Americans of this region built mounds so that they would have a place to hang out when it was flooding

flood shelters, redoubts during war, ritual spaces, the mound complexes would've had a lot of uses to judge from those the stone pyramids of mesoamerica were put to. probably inspired by exchange between north american and mesoamerican cultures as well, during the same interactions that brought potatoes, tomatoes, maize etc. north from mexico and peru

Yeah, mounds are pretty sweet. And they’re made of garbage, which is eco-friendly. We should make more mounds.

South Georgia isn't prepared for anything to ever happen. Like 95% of my family lives in/around Valdosta and I'm starting to get a bit worried for them now.

My parents and two youngest siblings live in a house surrounded by tall pines, probably 20ish trees are capable of landing on the house. My other brother doesn't have trees around his place, but he lives in a newer mobile home. One of my uncle lives in a wooden house that's over 100 years old with tall pines AND live oaks around it. And so on...

It's my mom's birthday today, :toot:

maria casualties were massive due to government apathy/incompetence/racism etc but also having nowhere to evacuate to

this could have an even higher death toll just from the sheer cognitive deficit of homo floridiensis

It takes a few days for the evacuation hype to build and rreally convince people to :frogout: is the problem. This thing has developed so quickly people aren't realizing it's real.
