My (18F) dad (40M) is taking his girlfriend (38F) and her kids (11F, 9F) to France, but not my brother (10M). I'm planning a vacation for the two of us at the same time and my boyfriend (18M) is giving me a hard time.Relationships

quote:

So my dad is in love with his new girlfriend (of 18 months) and is doing things for her and her kids that he never did for us. This is just the latest example. He's never taken us to any vacation but now he's paying for the whole thing to take her girlfriend and her two kids to visit France next month.

So I can suck it up as I'm 18 but my little brother is only 10 and he already feels abandoned and this will just add to that feeling. That's why I'm planning a little vacation weekend for the two of us at the same time as well, nothing expensive just getting on the road and spending the night somewhere other than home. At least when his dad takes his girlfriend and her kids to France, my brother will have a little vacation of his own to look forward to.

My boyfriend is relatively new, only dating 7 months. He's a decent guy and a nice person but he's been acting weird about this. Suggesting that me doing this is spoiling my brother, that nobody did this for me or for him (he has an absent father) and he says this will turn my brother into a spoiled brat. I don't agree with this at all. But he keeps insisting that my brother needs to be taught how tough the world is and shouldn't be coddled when something unpleasant happens.

After I heard all of this from him I decided to ignore all of it and stick to my original plan. Just today, he once again brought up this idea and said he's disappointed that I'm being an enabler of my father's lovely actions by trying to minimize the effect on my brother! What the hell? He then suggested that he should also come which I declined and then he was pretty upset. I'm just wondering that the hell is going on with him?

TLDR: Father is taking his girlfriend and her kids to France next month, I plan to take my little brother to a little vacation of our own so that he wouldn't feel like he's abandoned/excluded. My boyfriend has strong opinions on it and strongly believes I'm spoiling my brother, is also upset that I rejected his request to come with us.

You gotta build up that juvenile criminal record so you can funnel them into the 40-cent-an-hour workforce for a few years, then keep their job mobility down. Lay your foundations right and your decisions will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

This is absolutely true but Republicans like to use it as an excuse to strip them of funding to pay for tax cuts ("our education system is failing so why waste money that could go to my rich friends?") and third-way Dems like to use it as an excuse to strip them of funding to pay for charter schools ("our education system is failing and I will fix that problem by funneling money to 'alternatives' that don't scale to large populations but are conveniently run by my rich friends")

Mother [47F] wants my forgiveness now for sending me [24M] to boarding school since her new husband wouldn't have me when she remarried.

quote:

So when I was 15 my mom decided to marry a rich man. At that time it was me, my sister (11 at the time) and my mom. Sadly one of his conditions was that he did not want to have me around. Eventually my mother agreed that they would send me to boarding school in a different city and when I wasn't at school I will stay with my grandparents. I never knew why he didn't want to have me around. He had a son and a daughter around my age and more than enough space since he had a very large house.

It was a very good school, but I hated it. I was removed from all my friends and from my family, especially my little sister and was shipped to a new city with new people and no friends or family. Everytime I came back I had to stay with my grandparents who were nice, but really old and it was lonely as well. I couldn't even visit my sister, she and her mother had to come to me. I could always see that she was not happy with this arrangement but she didn't do anything to change that. I was never involved in celebrations, holidays, etc.

When I went to college I started having less and less contact. It was just natural. I felt unwelcome so I stayed away. I hated it since I basically lost the chance to be in my sister's life in any meaningful way during her teen years. Now she doesn't feel much about me, I'm a stranger to her. This whole thing made me lose all my family.

So my mom called me last week after almost a year of no contact and told me that she is divorcing her husband and wants to talk. I met her and she told me that she regrets everything and wants me to forgive her for all that she did to me.

I don't know what to think now. Whether to give her a chance or not. She can't give back what was taken from me. Is there any point doing this? I had moved on from it all.

Presumably her father being like he is did a lot to inform her taste in boyfriends

My [29M] boyfriend wants to be a pilot and I [26F] want to scream.

quote:

Hey guys,

I really need advice. I have a wonderful, loving, and caring boyfriend who is driving me absolutely mad.

Recently (this week) my boyfriend of 2 1/2 years has decided that he wants to be an airline pilot. I love that he seems really passionate and excited about the prospect (he hates his current job), but there are a couple catches.

First, my boyfriend has two degrees. He has an associates and a bachelors degree (unrelated fields) that he doesn't want to use. He decided that the fields offered careers that he didn't want to pursue *after* graduation, on both occasions.

Second, we live with his Dad. We moved in together six months into our relationship. He was working an unpaid internship and I was working full-time to cover expenses. I lost my job at the end of his internship and so, we decided to move back home for six months so I could transition back into school and he could find a job in his field. We've now been at his father's house for a little over a year.

Third, my boyfriend has switched jobs twice since his internship. On both occasions he thought it would be something he loved, and in the end he's despised it and wanted (or did) quit.

Fourth, I'm currently a full-time student and I also work full-time. I left a 70k/year job in sales to pursue my dream of medical school. I've worked my rear end off to arrange the promotions I've received at my new company while continuing my education so that we could be stable enough to move out of his father's house and really start a life together.

My boyfriend has made three prior failed career attempts. Becoming a pilot is incredibly expensive and time consuming. It's unlikely that my boyfriend will be able to work during his training program, and after all is said and done, he will have a total of $57,000 in government student loans (from his degrees), and likely over $100,000 in private student loans for his commercial pilot's license.

We haven't had a direct conversation about it quite yet, but I know that his pursuit of this means that:

a) We'll be at his father's house for another two years.

b) He's going to pursue another expensive endeavor that he may decide that he doesn't like at the end.

c) He's going to be gone several days a week (if he sticks with it), and I'll be a resident doctor (medical school gods willing), and that is going to end any potential for a family or family life.

Guys, how do I talk to him about this?
