Fly fish is just another fun way to catch fish. It's a whole new set of skills and like any sport hobby it's reel () easy to spend a lot of money on it.

Fly fishing is just very fun. If anyone gets a chance to fly fish, try to target species other than trout/salmon. If you want to see something that looks insane look up pin reels. I don't get how center pins work at all.

prom candy posted:This is an extremely dumb question I'm sure but what's the point of fly fishing? What does it give you that spinning or casting tackle can't? You can cast an extremely light hook a good distance relatively accurately and then let it drift in the current. That action makes a huge difference when the fish are used to eating stuff that's floating by in moving water. It's hard to reproduce that action on spinning tackle. The center pin is a similar idea, you chuck it out into current and then your bobber and eggsac bounces along downstream.

So basically I should learn to cast my baitcaster and buy a kayak before I spend all my money on fly gear?

We were going in like June/July to Sault Ste. Marie and up into Canada. Blew my mind that we decided at that time, only because the ice would have melted by then. Down here in NC/SC if it snows past April something is way off.

We went out on Simcoe for lakers and whities last winter, walked out about a km in the dark to a big shoal. I had the 9 inch fish finder to see what was up. Fished all day and caught a few of each but we were constantly moving up or down between 15 to 100ft and had fish coming to check out the baits every 10-15 minutes. Drilled about 40 holes with the hand auger. Good way to spend a nice day in January imo.

how to fly fish like a true eastern North Carolina hick: 1. get leader of like 18-24 inches of 4lb test 2. tie a barrel swivel to one end, a fly to the other 3. put a clear plastic bubble near the swivel with just enough water to give it casting weight but still float 4. cast it near some actual fly fisherman and shout WOOOOOOOOOOOOO and fart while you reel in some bluegill

I don't really drink much anymore but I'd be down for some micro tackle and perch. Someone mentioned fishing YouTube guys earlier, do you guys like Deer Meat For Dinner? He's super cheeseball sometimes in a god loving Florida kind of way but gently caress he does some good videos and he's one hell of fisherman/hunter. I'm a sucker for catch clean and cook vids. His cooking isn't brilliant but everything else is.

Good work on the surf today. Got a solid family dinner for later this week. Couple of cool things happened. The mullet run is in full force. Lots of black tip sharks were chasing the pods and doing some wicked jumps. Of course when they came through all the other fish would split and it'd be a half hour lull. Caught a huge fish that was a good fifteen minute fight and when I got it to the beach it turned out to be a massive ray. Then the line snapped. My son caught the biggest blue fish I've seen here so far. I didn't get a pic, but here's what it did to the hook. That wasnt a circle hook originally.

So I promised my 5 year old I would take him fishing tomorrow on a small near-by pond. I initially planned to use live bait (worms) and a bobber, but was thinking of going artificial. Any thoughts on using artificial + bobber or any artifical i should use for just a 5 year old. At the moment I am considering a Ned rig. hagie fucked around with this message at 15:07 on Oct 20, 2018 |

A bit late but man bluefish are delicious table fare! It’s my dad’s favorite fish to eat, bar none. Fried - filet and cut into 3-4 pieces per side, fry in a light batter and season -Yum Ceviche- filet and take extra time to remove bloodline on skin side, then dice up and mix lemon/lime, salt and pepper - amazing 12”-16” are the best eating. TBH I like them more than whiting, which are also good. Couple years ago we kept a bucket of blues and gave away 4 big whiting to a dude who wasn’t catching.

I've done plenty of Summer fishing and ice fishing but I've never really fished in the fall before. Air temps are between 30 and 50 degrees freedom and it's been raining or snowing quite a bit. Anything i should know about targeting bass and panfish from the shore?

Didn’t catch anything at the pond off the cut hotdogs. That said, I am now a believer in the Ned rig. Caught a 1lb dink on an ultralight rig that was a fun fight. Satiated my son’s desire to touch a fish and smell a fish. Made sure to have him tell everyone that WE caught the fish, not just daddy. Future fisherman planning his drop We bought that useless rod a few months back for like $10 because we have learned from previous exciting outdoor activities (t-ball) that there is no point in dropping cash on him at an age where he is hugely fickle in his decisions. I am considering finding a cheap Ugly Stick set up with one of those Zebco casters. I don’t think he has the dexterity/coordination to get into spinning tackle. hagie fucked around with this message at 17:51 on Oct 22, 2018 |

Fished a new spot at an inland waterway. The pompano are finally here in numbers as the water has cooled into the mid to low seventies. Caught several over the weekend. Unfortunately they were all too small. Did end up with whiting and a small snapper though. Also untold numbers of blues, catfish, rays, etc. Enjoyed the new spot but it has a hell of a current. Then I realized it's the spot where father and young son died a few weeks ago. The boy fell in, dad tried to save him and both were carried out to sea.
