It would be awesome if we could dance!
If Wake's reason behind his thirst for monster death is his friends/family/village/love interest getting murdered by them, I'm gonna cringe so hard.

I mean...what else would it be? A group of monsters showed up and stole his lunch money or something?

That being said, now that I think about it Wake doesn't particularly scream "tragic backstory" to me. There's not enough angst and bitterness in his dialogue or expressions for that. But I'm really not sure what would inspire that kind of hatred/obsession besides the usual reasons...

That would be funny, actually. It's nothing like that though.

Like Dr. Snark said, the family/friends/love interest death is pretty much the only kind of reason. It's super cliche, but if Wake was like 'I hate monsters just because, and endanger people to quench the thirst', then Wake looks like a straight up psychopath.

The game is still a cliche storm. It just does some stuff to avoid or play with those cliches sometimes.

The fact that he's not angsty and bitter all the time is what I like about him. He may be a little too focused on killing monsters sometimes, but its more like determination as opposed to angsty rage. Other than that, he's pretty well-adjusted. This is also the only time I can think of where he does something this stupid and reckless.

I have vaguely heard of that last one you mentioned. It sounds hilarious.

Oh, right. I didn't have room in the post to say this. I'll reveal Team A(wful) a little later today. I wanted to do it to cap off the update, but I was hitting the word limit hard. I'll also briefly include it at the start of the next update, for future archive purposes.

Next update is another .5 one. I need to show off the actual full first bonding events for each heroine so that we can get a vote going on who goes with us into the Lust Labyrinth.

Thinking on it, Wake could be crazy about killing monsters because one stole his humanity from him, leaving him with nothing but negative emotions and forcing him to keep up a facade around people.

Or perhaps one stole his memories of all those he cares about, and he now seeks to slay monsters nonstop until he finds the one that took his memories from him.

There's other motivators aside from murdered loved ones.

It's tricky to work those into one of these dating sim visual novel stories with a blank slate protagonist. These kind of games want you to be focused on the girls(or guys. I've played Otome games)/their problems and the bad guys or evil or whatever the hell.

Murdered loved ones is a simple, easy to establish motivation. Sure it's not particularly interesting, but it's easy to grasp and it can be 'tapped' as you pass by with the main story. No need to dwell on it and drag it through the entire plot. It's an incredibly popular character tool throughout history.

Stuff like what you suggest is definitely more interesting, no denying that. I'm just not going to fault any game for sticking with the most obvious choice. Unless they harp on it constantly. That's a different matter entirely.

That being said...

Dance Officer posted:

I drafted a version of that last scene where Ruby asks him what the hell he was thinking and Wake responds by saying Star God made him do it. It was then going to flashback to Asmodeus with Wake agreeing with Ruby in his head, but Star God goads him into ignoring her and attacking it anyway by implying Fuuko and the SC's would think less of him, and he wouldn't want that, would he?

I chose to cut it though, even before I knew I was up against the word limit. Giving Star God an actual voice (either through typed lines or by Wake claiming it) ruins the mysticism a little. I think it's funnier if characters just try to infer what He might say or do.

I am trying to punch up Wake's character whenever I can though, don't worry about that. I don't remember his back story scene very well though, so I'm waiting until I get to it in-game before I think about what I can do with it.

Here's a look at Team A(wful) as voted by the thread. I'll be including this in the 4.5 update as well, just so it's part of any possible archiving.

First off, with the most votes, Team A(wful)'s leader is Felicia the Thief (name suggested by Sword_of_Dusk)

Felicia's mom is Fuuko. I desperately tried to make it be Narika so that Zorro would have a sister, but RNG was just not having it.

Next up is Luna the Merchant. (I will have the bonus pictures uploaded for the update. I made this class apart from the other two and now I can't track down the footage.)

Luna's mom is Narika. Narika was the only one who could give me Merchant at the time.

Finally we've got Seth the Cleric.

Seth has....uhh....Seth has apparently seen some poo poo.

Seth's mom is Ellie. I need Narika for Merchant and I needed Fuuko for Thief, so I flipped a coin between Ellie and Chloe for the Cleric since they could both make it.

:stare: drat it that stare, man.

Oh, you can also see a male Grappler under Elly the Cleric there. I made one during training and called it Baki like Zanzibar Ham suggested, because drat it I like that reference. Baki will eventually be rolled into Team B when I decide to start using it (probably dungeon 2 since using more than 1 team to fight Asmodeus is just being mean to him). I'm going to try and compose my other teams with classes that weren't voted for in Team A. That's a little limited right now, but it will eventually open up as more classes become available for you guys to vote on.

Finally, here's a look at the Team's overall stats. Keep in mind that daddy Wake still needs to train the little buggers. They're still level 1 right now. I'll show you what skills they pick up once they grow up a little.

I took a 'break' today by just doing grinding and bond leveling, so I'll start on the update next session.

@MythosDragon - While grinding, I think I found what you are talking about with Experience Pinata that explains the levels, but I have to confirm something because it still strikes me as a little weird. This is my first time touching this game since I finished it around release, has there always been a random chance for 'God's Poke' enemies to give a character an entire level up regardless of current exp?

No clue, I was in chapter 4 with 20 hours on my playtime when I stopped last time. I didnt notice that, just the exp pinata's hiding in blue enemies with the see team skill. (You get haha what is damage 3500 hp multi-potions if you actually fight them though)

Chloe and Fuuko have about the same amount of exp(Just shy of level 10) while Narika who I tried doing the "go up stairs whenever found rather than exploring" technique with apparently didnt see the pinata and is at level 7.

 Spike Chunsoft, I'm saying nice things about you. Please don't let me find out that you not only screwed up a translation already in English but also messed up the game's code and caused glitches.

Narika gained 3 full levels completely at random while I was running around. I had been keeping an eye on exp totals while grinding. I passed over a God's Poke enemy at one point and saw a Level Up notification pop over Narika. When I checked her out, she was one level higher and also 124 exp away from the next level. I started recording my grinding at that point to try and see if I was crazy or not and I spotted it happen twice more.

I mean, if it is a glitch then it works in my favour. Not going to look a gift horse in the mouth and all that. But come on SC. What the hell did you do to this game?

I should mention that I attempted to repeat it with Fuuko to no avail.

EDIT: Hold on a second, now that I look the Star Children again, Luna and Seth's elements seem reversed.... it could have been mutation I guess, but that's a big rear end coincidence. Am I honestly losing my mind right now?

There are so many options that could have fixed this. I mean, Ruby not briefing him in advance is stupid that can't be corrected, but the sealing doll? There are endless ways to fix that.

That's what puts it so high on my list of worst moments. The supposedly gifted hot shot prodigy researcher makes what I honestly can't even describe as a mistake. It's straight up intentional stupidity. She never gets called on it, the whole thing gets glossed over, and both the writers and the translation team made no effort to fix it despite how easy it is.

SSNeoman posted:

I have an interpretation of Ruby as a character that ties in to this bullshit power trip she tries to pull, but unfortunately I can't discuss it until basically just before the last dungeon.

It is incredibly funny how important she deludes herself into believing she is though. Again, she isn't the head of AngelMarker research, she just runs that one lab. Even if Wake was just one of a group of God's Gifts, he outranks her by loving miles. The Academy/Government are the only ones who would have power to expel Wake, and they aren't going to act on the words of some lab tech that withheld important tools for no reason.

We don't even know where Ruby got authority over this mission. She just hijacks the whole thing and says it's because she is an expert on Dusk Circles and Mattero just goes along with it. There's no way the government would give operational control over humanity's best hope to some random scientist. They would have made Ruby an advisor and assigned a loving general or other person experienced with combat and giving orders.

Honestly the issue here is that they wanted to have some drama type stuff and really didnt think it through. It happens a lot.

Also you've mentioned this, but this world really isn't developed beyond what is immediately necessary and is honestly probably the biggest issue. It really doesnt feel like a world when you get the distinct feeling that the only place that matters is this small island of teenagers and perverts.

Also I'm gonna have to pull out of showing some of the other routes, something came up and I'm not gonna make that commitment right now, I'm sorry.

~Update 4.5 (Bonding Redux): Earth girls are easy; Whatcha gonna do, lil' buckaroo?~

In the last update, the game took one last major swing at us with the Tutorial Bat before we escaped its clutches. Feel the sunshine on your skin and say goodbye to the rails, we're calling the shots now (We'll only occasionally get hit in the face with tutorial cards, instead of constantly).

Oh, and Wake's unsettling blood lust for monster killing caused him to attack a monster that he was told seconds before would just revive every time. He got briefly yelled at by Ruby, before a combination of everyone dumping the fate of humanity on him and Ruby's insulting level of competence caused him to snap and metaphorically bite her head off (and just barely restrain himself from doing that literally).

Asmodeus is still kicking, for now, but we're in no shape to charge off after him just yet. Don't get me wrong, Wake and the gang could decimate him right this second. I mean more of a 'mentally not ready' thing. Wake and Ruby need to clear their heads, calm down, and come to an understanding.

Before we get around to that however, we've got some little munchkins to welcome to the family.

The thread gave the most votes to the Thief class, so that means Felicia here will be Team A(wful)'s leader. Felicia's name comes courtesy of user Sword_of_Dusk.

Felicia's mother is Fuuko. I wanted to have it be Narika so that Zorro would have a sister, but the RNG was having none of that family love nonsense. Fuuko was the only one able to get me this class.

Following Thief, the thread voted to have a Merchant on the team. Her randomly generated name is Luna.

Luna's mom is Narika. Narika was the only one able to get the Merchant class at the time.

And finally we have Seth. The thread was nice enough to put in the votes for a Cleric so that everyone's boo-boo's could be patched up.

Seth has...uhhmm....Seth has apparently seen some poo poo

Seth's mommy is Ellie. Both Chloe and Ellie were able to make a Cleric, so I flipped a coin and it wound up being Ellie. Chloe will sadly not have any kids on the team this time.

:stare: That stare, man.

Anyway, that's going to be our team for the first dungeon. You might notice that I have all 3 team slots open now, but I won't be putting together a team of my own until the next chapter. Taking more than one team to fight Asmodeus is just being mean. He at least deserves a chance, however small it may be.

So what do we have on the docket for this (half) update? It's more bonding time with the ladies!

In Update 3.5 we got to see an introduction for the current four heroines. Just a little meet-and-greet between them and Wake. Once you max out a bonding gauge, actual character arc bonding events open up. We'll check in with all four heroines this time, but in the next chapter we will have a fifth join the team. From that point on the thread will have to make a call and narrow things down to three girls.

-Redux-

We'll start with Ellie, who Wake currently has in Redux for...Wake reasons.

Alright, go for it.

Well, if you say so.

:siren:I shouldn't have to warn you at this point, but I will anyway. Possible NSFW.
Ellie Transformation

Ellie starts off like pretty much every heroine, with a spin followed by exploding into light.

She gets some kind of leotard with sleeves, or dress missing the bottom half, beats me.

I will point out that some of the transformation scenes have added little details in them that I think were intentional nods to their respective character's arc. I could just be giving the developers more credit than they deserve.

They are kind of spoilerly to talk about though, so I'll probably do a breakdown on it once the game has finished.

She also cranks up the magical girl aspect by using a scepter looking Dusk Breaker and floating around on it. Maybe if she did that all the time instead of just during transformation then she might be more punctual.

It's also kind of comically over sized for her. It's taller than she is and that end piece looks like it's got more mass than her torso.

Her star pupils still weird me out.

Well, what did you think?

Not bad. It fits in with the theme. I can work with this.

What are you talking about? Didn't you need me for training?

This is training.

Huh? Aren't we supposed to be fighting training monsters?

That's what I was working myself up for, but then it turned out that the Labyrinths were kind of a joke. So transformations just jumped up on the priorities list.

Okay, well, if you say so. Is that really all we're going to do today though? Seems like a waste.

That's all for now, I've got some stuff to plan. I'll meet up with you tomorrow though. Just don't disappear on me.

Aheheh... I can't make any promises about that.

-1st-Year Classroom- (Next Day)

There you are. You're a hard one to catch.

Still, is there something wrong? You came all the way to the first-years' classroom.

It's one floor down and I need to pass it to get out of this place. I didn't exactly have to hike to get here.

I didn't catch you at a bad time, did I?

Oh no, not at all! I'm happy you took the time to come see me. Um... So, what did you want to talk about?

I was thinking about something last night. What did you do before coming here to the Academy?

Before I came here? I lived in the metropolis of Shelgard, on the continent.

Shelgard, huh? I don't recall ever being there myself.

Well... Shelgard is actually made up of six cities. Each city has a Cardinal presiding over one of the six elements. Each of those Cardinals governs that city.

Shelgard is the city (or cities I suppose) at the base of the Rootstone. There's a church for each of the six elements and a Cardinal that runs it and the city, essentially. I don't remember if they ever mention it or not, but I would assume that there is some form of Pope or similar religious leader that oversees the entire Church of Aterra. If not then, whoa nelly, there's got to be some inter Cardinal war coming down the pipe at some point.

I was a nun at the Aterra Gracia Grand Church. That's the church that presides over the element of Dusk.

A nun, huh? Interesting...

Yes... It's embarrassing, but it's something like that. I don't seem anything like a nun, though. Aheheh...

Did you get to slap anyone with a ruler?

We don't do that... Anymore.

Lame.

Well, I can't say I'm that surprised. You sort of have this air of refinement about you, even if it does pass by like a gale.

Huh!? M-Me!? N-Nah... I'm far from being a lady... As you can see, I'm tiny and kind of a doofus, too...

Doofus is a little harsh. 'Rushed' seems more appropriate.

I may not look it, but I know my place.

That's a.... I'm not actually sure of whether or not that's a good attitude to have.

...Oh, we're getting off-topic. Anyway, that's why I have to do some work for Gracia while I'm attending the Academy. A Star Brand appeared on me, after all.

Wait, you're slaving away at the Academy as well as the Church? At the same time?

That's a way of looking at it. That's why I show up late for class a lot. Aheh... I wonder if I'll manage to graduate from the Academy if this keeps up.

That doesn't seem like something to ponder about so cheerfully.

Well, listen. If you need help with any of it then just let me know. I'll try and do what I can. You're going to burn yourself out at this rate.

Thank you, but I can handle my work for Gracia on my own.

Plus, you don't seem like a good 'fit' for Church work, you know?

I don't? I'm God's Gift, I figured the Church types would love having me do that religious crap.

That's sort of an example of what I was getting at.

...Point taken.

It would make me happy if you could support me while we're in the Labyrinths, though. I'll be counting on you.

Now that, I'm a perfect fit for that. Up top!

Ah.

Don't leave me hangin.

I-I'm sorry! It's not like I don't want to shake your hand. Um... I have very cold hands, and... How do I put this...? I didn't want you to think I was cold-hearted.

Riiight. I remember you not being too excited about the whole touching thing during Classmating either.

Oh, yes... It's something like the same reason...

No worries. Cold hands mean a warm heart. Or something hoky like that anyway. Greeting cards are getting weird.

Huh? Really?

Th-thank you! If that's what you think, then I'll stop worrying about it, too. I see... So that means I have a warm heart. Aheheh, that makes me happy.

By the way, what exactly does the Church have you running around doing all the time?

Uh... I'm sorry, but I can't say. I'm not allowed to tell people about it.

Fair enough, I shouldn't ask then. Alec did mention that the Church sends disciples out on special assignment. No surprise that they wouldn't want their various work to be talked about.

I'm sorry... But my work isn't anything that you have to worry about. I've been given orders to make investigating the Labyrinths a priority...

So, I'd like to accompany you as much as you need me. You don't have to hold back. I may not look it, but I'm pretty tough.

Let's do what we can to avoid testing that claim.

I'll try my best! Well then, I have to get to class, so please excuse me.

It would make me happy if you'd come chat with me when you have time.

I'll be sure to keep in touch. Once things have calmed down a little at least.

Aheheh... Well, then, please excuse me!

*Ellie leaves*

...

*beep* Zorro. I need another favor.

Zorro is here, dad.

Yeah, hi. Listen, I get the sneaking suspicion that the Church is keeping tabs on me. I have enough tabs kept on me as it is, so it's time I keep some of my own.

I get to be a spy!?

If you agree to never shout 'spy' again, then yes.

Wake has confirmed that Ellie is definitely not a figment of his imagination, unless his subconcious mind is incredibly good at fabricating entire back stories using information on places he's never been to.

Let's see, who else did Wake go and nag during his little regrouping period?

-Redux-

All right, let's see it.

Do I really have to say that?

It will help boost your confidence. There's no-one else here, just me and you, so there's no need to be nervous.

T-That's true. You were very helpful. In that case, I'll do my best.

Narika Transformation

I'm going to go into a bit more detail on Narika's transformation, because her's is kind of out of place compared to everyone elses.

So Narika's transformation proceeds like everyone else's. A spin, exploding light, you know the deal.

She has the Sailor Moon ribbon effect on her costume.

Then there's the way too close shots of T&A. The usual stuff.

Here's where her scene gets odd.

She calls her Dusk Breaker to her like Thor calls Mjolnir.

And that thing comes in like a drat fighter jet.

Narika catches it, at which point the thing tries to rip her arm out of its socket.

Then it yanks her all over the place and makes her eat dirt like it has a mind of its own.

Narika briefly drops off screen before hoisting herself back to her feet.

And then we apparently get to see what happens when animators are half asleep and/or overworked. I don't know if it's just me, but that face looks a little off. Maybe it's the angle?

That part aside, I want to point out that everyone else has relatively straightforward transformation sequences. Narika is the only one that has a 'goofy' tone. Even the character that is basically the butt-monkey/'Chlotz' of the girls group has a completely regular transformation.

It's just weird. This might be some kind of holdover from an earlier draft where transformations were more 'wacky', but I'm not sure. The other 7 characters that transform just finish by striking a pose that's either heroic, lighthearted, or serious business.

Dammit, why didn't that feel right?

I-I'm sorry! I tried my best and--

Hm? Oh, no, you were great. Loved the 'I have the power' pose and the cool ribbon effect.

You've got to practice sticking that landing though. Kind of flubbed it at the end there. No, something didn't feel right with the phrase. I thought your transformation would be more...watery looking? I was expecting bubbles or shimmering, that kind of thing.

Why would you expect that? I use Earth element magic.

Wait, what?! But your hair, and personality, and--okay I'll admit the Brand and costume are a little more on the purple side, but it's still close. How are you not water typed?

I'm sorry... Fuuko told me that she uses Aqua though, if that's what you really want.

Fuuko uses water?! I thought her and Ellie were Wind!

Actually, I heard Ellie mention to Chief Ruby that she uses Fire. They were talking a bit while you and Fuuko were in the Labyrinth.

FIRE!? Her hair is green! I just saw her float around on her magic flying wand thing!

Dammit, this is all falling apart on me... Those comics you lent me were worthless, Chlotz.

D-Do you still need me...or should I...

No, it's fine. You take off. I've got a drawing board that I need to get back to. I'll catch up with you this afternoon.

(Come on Star God, just let me have this...)

-2nd-Year Classroom- (Afternoon)

Come to think of it, you disappeared after our training. I didn't see you around during lunch either. Did you go out somewhere?

No... I was too busy with class vice representative stuff... I actually haven't had lunch yet.

Well come on then. Let's grab something before you rip someone's head off in a hunger induced rage.

I sort of came close to doing that with Ruby.

....yeeeess? Narika... could you maybe not look at me like that?

We need to get to know each other more to have stronger Star Children.

...I mean, perfectly normal people that don't look creepily at others like to get to know each other too. For non Star Child related reasons.

Ah... Oh no! There's a student council meeting starting soon. I'm sorry, but I have to go now.

That's a shame.

(I feel like I dodged a bullet for some reason.)

I'm the vice representative, so I have to go. There'll be problems if I don't. I'm really sorry...! Oops! Now I really need to hurry!

[3rd-Year Class Rep]: You're still here, Narika? Everyone else is already in session.

I-I'm sorry. I'll head over right now!

You know what, I'll wait around until you get back.

Won't that be a hassle for you...?

Nah, it's fine. I have something to do to keep me preoccupied. It'll be a nice way to relax.

All right... I'll head straight back once the meeting is over. Gotta go!

-Hallway-

[3rd-Year Class Rep]: It'll be up to you, Narika.

Ah, yes... I understand.

-2nd-Year Classroom-

(There's just no way to make that work. Everything would just be off. Not to mention I still need to devote time to twisting Fuuko's arm into saying it. Who knows what Ellie and Chloe will say. I might have to browbeat them on board too.

Sorry to make you wait.

Hm!? Oh, no, it's fine! I was lost in thought there. Important stuff.

I'm so sorry. It's so late now...

You're not looking too good. Something happen?

Huh? Oh, um... It's nothing serious.

You sure you don't want to talk about it? Come on, lay it on me.

Well, actually... It's decided that the student council will be volunteering to collect donations. Everyone else was busy that day, so I was picked to be in charge of it... Which means I'm going to have to ask for donations at the Church. But I'm not very good at public speaking, so... I'm worried...

Especially after last time...

Is that all? I can help with that. I did it once before.

Are you sure?

Of course. It's for the best anyway, I've got Zorro on another assignment, so--

Huh? What kind of assignments do you give him?

...Don't worry about. It's a father-son kind of thing.

Oh... Thank you. That's a huge relief to hear.

No problem. Now come on. I don't know about you, but I still want food.

Ah, right. I'm... actually really hungry.

What are you up for?

I love parfaits...

That's more of a dessert thing, but whatever floats your boat I guess. Really planning on draining my wallet aren't you?

Yes.

Narika continues to get stuff dumped on her due to her current inability to tell people to gently caress off (and also because of the ongoing disappearance of the actual Class Rep :iiam:). There was also a brief moment of...something happening there. Whatever, probably not important. All these girls have been a little off in some way. Must be something in the water.

Time to check in on Ms. Homeroom Teacher.

-Redux-

Are you sure that this is all we need to do today? What about training the Star Children? You're not neglecting their education, are you?

Calm down, "Ms. Chloe". The kids are fine. I sent them off to get some practice.

Really? How are they doing on their own, though?

They're a....

-Simulation-

Seth, stop casting Heal all the time! It was only a scratch!

I want something to do! Elley said that she didn't get to cast anything when she went with dad and her mom to the Labyrinth. I don't want to be bored when it's our turn!

Mana Stones are expensive. You are wasting precious capital for insignificant gain.

We find Mana Stones everywhere. Dad doesn't have to buy them.

But those can be sold for profit!

-Redux-

They're a work in progress, let's just leave it at that.

Anyway, before we start, I need to check something. You use Fire magic, right?

Actually, I use Wind magic.

*sighs* Of course you do. It's all gone to hell then. Okay, let's skip the phrase and see what you can do. I have to start from scratch anyway, apparently.

:siren:I shouldn't have to warn you at this point, but I will anyway. Possible NSFW.
Chloe Transformation

Chloe's transformation is a liiiittle difficult to show off in screen shot form while sticking to my 'make the screenshots as safe for work as possible' plan.

I guess Narika's isn't the only odd one out in a sense. Someone in the thread mentioned that they liked the fact that the costumes weren't skimpy. That holds true for everyone except Chloe.

Skipping over most of her actual costume change, we see that she has a really cool Dusk Breaker.

She uses a set of four attack drones. Also, no, this is not halfway through the costume change part of her transformation.

Sooo yeah. For whatever reason, Chloe breaks off from the other heroines who have relatively modest costumes and just goes insane with hers.

In the promotional images for the game she actually has more fabric over her chest. For whatever reason (fanservice, it's because fanservice) they seem to have cut off the bottom half at the last minute. It's the only apparent change in the character design.

So, how do I look? Cool, right?

Well, I'm sure it feels cool. In a temperature sense. What the hell are you wearing?

What's wrong with it? I designed it myself. Is it too flashy?

Something like that.

Switching topics as desperately as I can, that is an awesome Dusk Breaker.

Right?

They are very difficult to control though, so don't even think about asking for some of your own. They're too dangerous for a student.

Dammit. I'm just suddenly not allowed to have fun anymore, am I?

-Faculty Office-

Hey, Chloe.

[Female Disciple B]: Chloe, would you please be the moderator for our new club?

Uh-uh. It's not "Chloe," it's "Ms. Chloe," girls.

I didn't spend one long year in university and get my Master's to have students just refer to me as 'Chloe'.

(The hell is with this crowd?) Hey, excuse me. Need to slip through here.

Oh, it's you. Can I help you?

I got those surveys you asked me to get. What--

[Male Disciple A]: Yeah, she's right.

[Female Disciple B]: We've been waiting here forever... It's our turn next.

[Female Disciple A]: Being God's Gift doesn't mean you get a free pass. Line up like everyone else.

What the hell are you talking about? It most certainly does give me a free pass. I'm pretty sure the poo poo I have to do is higher on the priorities list than you figuring out how to graph a function.

Erm... I'm sorry, Wake. This is going to take a while.

What is wrong with everyone at this school? Fine, I'll wait in the drat line so I can hand you some documents.

Good. God's Gift must have patience. But really, thank you. With that attitude you'll earn high marks from me.

Of course you'll lose those marks with that crass language. Watch your mouth.

(When this school gets overrun, I'll be the one sitting on a throne of monster corpses just laughing at the chaos.)

*The waiting is the hardest part; Every day you see one more card*

[Female Disciple G]: Thanks for all the help, Ms. Chloe.

If you're still having trouble, let me know, okay?

...

I'm sorry you had to wait so long. What is it you wanted to see me for?

Surveys. Delivered.

Thanks. You can just put those on my desk.

Are you fu--

...

Fine! Fine. I already freaked at Ruby, I don't need another make up meeting on my schedule.

Chloe, your desk looks like the local dump. I'm gonna need some of these books out of the way.

Okie dokie.

"Chloe Genus"? Did you write these?

As a matter of fact, I did.

Little too tough for you, huh?

No, I'm just disappointed that you wrote a book involving 'non-orientable' in the title and didn't work your last name into it. You missed a prime marketing opportunity.

Did you write all of these things?

[Female Disciple A]: Yup! That's Chloe for you, she's a genius.

[Female Disciple B]: Plus, she's really kind!

[Female Disciple A]: And she always listens to our problems! I don't know what we'd do without Chloe!

*sigh* I wish you would show some respect and call me "Ms. Chloe"...

Ahem. If you have any worries or problems, feel free to ask me, okay?

Thanks, but I'm more of a listener kind of guy. I keep my own worries and problems bottled up inside, let them sit for a while, then crack open the cask when monsters show up. It's like aging a fine wine.

That...that explains a lot.

I couldn't find you, so I came looking for you. And here you are, with my sister.

I believe someone present in this room gave a certain other someone his blessing.

You know drat well you tricked that out of me.

Oh boy... Chlotz, I don't know what idea got into your head, but it's wrong. He's not here to waste time, unlike you. Oh, afternoon classes are about to begin. You better head back to class.

Yeah, she's right. Go to your next class already.

Yes, sir.

That includes you, Chlotz.

Yeah, yeah.

*sigh* I know he's a bit obstreperous, but he's my brother. Can you look after him?

H-Hey! I don't even know what that means!

It means you have an energy that can't be contained.

Please don't do that. He's going to look it up later and what you told him will be just close enough that he'll think it was meant in a positive sense.

Trust me, it fits you to a T.

Erm... Well... No use arguing with you, Sis. I'd be in over my head.

You sure do get along well with each other.

You think so?

We do, don't we?

Come on... That was the bell for the next class. Get a move on.

Chloe is that co-worker that has a 'word-a-day calendar' and you bet your rear end she's 365'in that bastard. She's also a super genius that's not smart enough to know when she's being taken advantage of. Or she's like Narika and is in need of Wake's corrupting influence to start telling her fan club to shove it.

Last up is Fuuko. Wake left her alone for a day or two because of the whole 'ripping Ruby a new rear end in a top hat thing'. Also the part where he could have gotten her and the Star Children killed, I guess. Point is, girl needed a little space.

Wake is already familiar with her transformation, and he's had to start from square one with his vision, so no Redux for Fuuko.

-2nd-Year Classroom-

Hey Fuuko, you heading home for the day?

Hm? Oh, no.

I mean, I get all lazy when I'm living alone in a dorm room. When I go back to my room, I read some comics, listen to music, then fall asleep. I felt like that wasn't a good way to be spending my time... Haha.

How are you living on your own? Don't you get all lazy, too?

I don't really get the time to be lazy. If I'm not hanging out with one of you guys then I'm training, or training the kids, or shopping for training related stuff, or trying to straighten out the ongoing disaster that is transformations.

You're so responsible, aren't you? You're nothing like me.

In a lot of ways actually.

We were both chosen by the Star Brand. I wonder what makes us so different... Haha.

From the sounds of it, I can think of one major factor...

What was that?

Nothing. I was just wondering what club you planned to join.

Oh, sorry. I got off-track there.

I don't really have anything that I'm especially good at, so I don't know. I'm average at everything I do. It's actually kind of depressing sometimes. But, you know, I can't stay like that anymore.

How is that depressing? If you're average at everything you do then that means you have a ton of possibilities. You've got a solid baseline to start from on all sorts of things. Most people have to train and practice at things to get good at them you know.

Haha, I guess you sort have a point there.

I mean, I was made an Elite for some reason. To be honest, all the pressure is giving me stomachaches.

Imagine how I've been feeling. I sure as hell wish someone would.

That doesn't stop me from having three meals a day, though. I still love to eat.

(Ignored again. No surprises there.)

*snaps fingers* Focus girl. You're getting off track again. Didn't you say something about swimming? You're good at that right?

Oh, you remembered. Haha, I'm happy you did. I think I barely mentioned it. But I'm not really that good at it. I've just been doing it since I was a kid. Swimming is... special to me.

Special, how?

Oh, nothing important. I just have some personal memories about it. It's not really anything worth mentioning.

Fair enough. Seems like all of you have got stuff you want kept secret.

And I can just go swimming on my own, anyway. I was thinking about choosing a club that would help us with the Labyrinths.

Then join the Aquatics team. They apparently train to fight underwater.

Underwater monsters... I don't think that's going to be very useful to us, though. I feel that the Marksmanship Club might be more helpful.

Well, that would be pretty helpful since you use guns. On the other hand, one of those Labyrinths might be underwater, or have enemies underwater. We've only been to one place you know. Plus, it would be better to go with a club you like, don't you think?

I don't know if I'll be able to keep up...

*sighs* What is with you guys and self-doubt?

Come on, we've got somewhere to visit.

Hey... wait. Why did you take my hand? Where are we going?

-Poolside-

Uh, yes!

[Aquatics Captain]: Do you have any swimming experience?

I've been swimming since I was little.

[Aquatics Captain]: I see. Bear in mind, though, fighting underwater is different than swimming. We use Aquatic Magic to allow us to breathe underwater, and grow fins to help us swim.

Hold up, what kind of weird biological experimentation is going on in here?! I don't remember ever hearing about stuff like this going on in the school.

[Aquatics Captain]: It's on all the recruitment posters. Haven't you seem them around campus?

That's what those things are? I thought it was just for some play about mermaids.

[Aquatics Captain]: Well you thought wrong Mr. Bigshot. Although we do, sometimes, put on shows. But those are different posters entirely! Anyway, we're getting off track.

[Aquatics Captain]: The members of the Aquatics Team are specialists who fight undersea monsters. But I'm sure an S Rank like you will learn the ropes quickly.

D-Do you really think so?

[Aquatics Captain]: Yes. Also, using Aquatic Magic just feels good.

[Aquatics Captain]: Soooo good.

Do you... uhh, need a moment alone there Captain?

[Aquatics Captain]Ahem...

[Aquatics Captain]If you're able to master the Shifting spell... You'll be able to swim like a fish.

Like a fish... Really?

[Aquatics Captain]: Yep. If you're interested at all, we're having practice. Come take a look.

Like a fish... Haha, I wonder if I'll really be able to swim like that...

Someone's in a better mood.

Oh... Do you think so?

If this team really can help me swim like a fish, I want to give it a try. And, this club is training us to fight monsters. That sounds like an Elite thing.

You'll do fine.

I hope so... Hey, why don't you join, too? Can you swim at all?

Oh hell no. I can swim, but I'm not going in that pool after hearing that girl's...enthusiasm. I'm also not super excited about that fish thing. You know I love transforming, but I draw the line at growing fins. Sorry, but that's a hard pass for me.

Oh, don't apologize. I just wanted to see if you were interested. I guess it's a little disappointing. I thought you'd be good competition.

Nice try, but I don't fall for that reverse psychology junk. Let me know if you'd like a cheerleader though.

Yeah. I'll be sure to go to you if I have any problems. Well, since I have your support, I think I'll give this my best shot.

I'm going to stay a little longer and watch them practice. Thanks for coming along with me. I'll see you tomorrow.

That's it for Bonding Event 1 for the four main heroines we currently have. Now I need some more voting carried out.

In the next update, it's time for Wake and the gang to back to the Lust Labyrinth and finish the job that would have already been done if Ruby hadn't been such a moron. Our new team will play some kickball with Asmodeus, then we're on our way to Chapter 2 (after only 5 full updates and two half updates).

You mentioned you were on Chapter 4 anyway. I doubt the LP will be getting that far anytime soon. Actually, that's a little hard to tell.

This brought up something I probably should put in the OP. It's not a big deal, but if anyone has played this game then try and avoid stuff like 'Chloe's route is really interesting' or 'Ellie's was my favourite'. I don't want the thread to be influenced, I'd rather see the people who haven't played it vote based on the bond events that they are reading.

Not that people who have played this can't vote. By all means go right ahead.

By the way, I'm not directing that at you specifically M.Matsuda. 'Really liked/nostalgia' just jogged my memory about it.

For the dungeon, take Narika.

This character to element mapping really makes no sense.

While it is really hard to explain just what those "non-orientable surfaces" mentioned in Chloe's book title are, you've probably heard of the most iconic example of one: the Möbius strip. (Differential geometry, meanwhile, is just regular geometry With Calculus).

Oh no, I restarted the game, deleted my data too to reset the database for some reason I cant articulate. I'm still gonna try to play along and will compare if you need, its just I'm the type that would rather not start something rather than quit halfway and I added a new source of stress to my life this week so an actual commitment like taking a few screenshots and posting them no matter how easy might be an issue.

As such, I'll be voting Narika for pretty much everything.

As for outfits, I'll vote for Ellie and Narika Classic, Chloe Alt. On the grounds that at least Chloe's alt looks like she had to rush into battle without finishing getting dressed, rather than being in out-and-out fetish gear.

While it is really hard to explain just what those "non-orientable surfaces" mentioned in Chloe's book title are, you've probably heard of the most iconic example of one: the Möbius strip. (Differential geometry, meanwhile, is just regular geometry With Calculus).

I kind of like the element mapping in a strange way. It's one of the things that this game does to twist a cliche a bit. Every character is not colour coded to their respective element, but at the same time there's a strange coherence to the way they have it laid out. The most obvious example is Fuuko's element being water, since she has a thing for swimming, yet her costume has more of a green and white scheme, which is typically more related to Wind. I think it's a neat touch personally, even though it looks kinda weird.

:siren: Incoming math! Avert thine eyes! :siren:

What's the best way to explain this.... Characteristics looks simple enough at first (meaning a feature or something you use to identify a person/place/thing), but Characteristics also has a mathematical definition which has to do with Logarithms.

Non-Orientable surfaces are explained above. In simple terms, it's when you have a single 3D object or 'thing' where, if you moved a 2D image around the surface, would cause the image being moved to show up mirrored every time. An 'orientable' surface is one where the image would always return to its original position in the same orientation. Basically, if you put a 2D non-symmetrical image on the surface of a Möbius strip (a Non-Orientable surface), then moved it along, the image would flip every time it completed a circuit.

Differential Geometry is also explained above. It's 3D geometry. So think of it like you having a graph (X, Y axis). Then you smack a Z axis on that son of a bitch and now you're dealing with surfaces and curves of 3D objects. It's a LOT more complicated than that of course. It involves using two different types of Calculus (which is a nightmare in its own right) and I think two different types of algebra.

Piecing it all together, you've got something like 'Identifying non-orientable surfaces in 3D geometry'.

The joke I wrote for Wake refers to Chloe's last name. In Mathematics, 'Genus' refers to the number of holes an orientable surface has. When talking about the Genus of a non-orientable surface, it's talking about cross-caps, which are a completely different thing that I am not getting in to. The joke is that Wake thinks Chloe should have put her surname into the title of the book as a way to market it, like 'Characteristics of a Non-orientable Surfaces Genus in Differential Geometry', or something like that.

I loving hate Math. If anyone with an actual degree or doctorate in math wants to explain that all better or more accurately then be my guest. I made every attempt I could to distance myself from math as soon as we waded into stuff like this.

namehereguy posted:

I'm going to have to burst some bubbles here.

First of all, here is an example of Chloe's promotional image just before the game's release. I'm linking to the page rather than the image because that thing is like 5000 pixels tall. It's ridiculously over sized. You can see that the costume still looks like it got pulled into a lawnmower, but she at least has full coverage over her chest. The developers decided to make a last minute change to this by snipping out two holes on the lower half. I disagree with this decision.

So we can't really do anything about that. It was changed before the game released, that's just her official look.

Here's the bad part. We unlock an alternate dungeon costume for Wake later on that is just his school uniform. So Chloe gets one too and she can go into dungeons dressed in her teacher outfit, right? HAHA, no. The girls unlock alt costumes at the same time that are swimsuits (because obviously). Despite the fact that Chloe has a 3D model in game in her teacher outfit (the one that's used during bonding scenes), she does not unlock that outfit for dungeon use even though Wake gets a uniform version for himself. The same goes for the other girls. Their costumes are Battle Suit, Battle Suit Alt, Swimsuit (more appropriate to call them bikinis though. Swimsuit suggests that it's a Japanese swim class style thing).

Also, as I mentioned previously, the Steam version of this game is basically just pulled from the Vita. I am now realizing that apparently they fiddled with some stuff, but the game itself is in an .exe format. The only file folders I can mess with are mostly storage for the RAW video files. So I cannot mess with the files to put Chloe in her teacher outfit (or just edit her 3D character model in any way). Chloe will unfortunately be stuck in her stripper-wear.

It's a strange choice in my opinion. First of all, let me state that I do not endorse companies cutting out costumes and selling them as DLC. That being said, I am surprised that Spike Chunsoft did not create a bunch of alternate outfits for this game to sell as DLC. Those Alt colours I've been posting were originally part of a ‎¥200/$2 DLC pack, and that was it. This game is ripe for additional costumes though. On top of having the girls just able to wear their School Uniforms in dungeons, each one of them has, at minimum, one other costume they are shown wearing (in CG) during their respective routes that could have been used as a basis for an additional costume. I can't point them out (for obvious spoiler reasons) but they all get some kind of additional look. So that's at least 2 extra costumes that could have been tossed up on the PS store or eShop for like $5. Then boom, money.

Chloe is a (sort of) redhead teacher. As I've never been particularly offended by fanservice, she is alright by me.

Come on thread, hot teacher here. Let her have her fun.

If you think about it, that's what Chloe thinks is appropriate to wear on field trips with her children. :(

Don't care, still on team Chloe. I want funnels to destroy the demons and I don't mind dumb anime poo poo.

Jack in!! MegaMan, Execute!
I played the demo of this game. The only thing I remember is that when you made Star Children, you get some brief cutscene while some women in the background are singing "I just wanna make love to you~"

But aside from that brief bit of hilarity, it just wound up being wholly uninteresting to me. I'll give the LP a look-see, though.
