REMEMBER SPONGE MONKEYS posted:The dash thing was a recall, maybe the grace period ended though. I was waiting for the super hot temps to end or I figured it’d be a waste of time (mine busted apart years ago). Got hatch openers on recall too, but haven’t ever had an issue. Yeah I was in the dealership and got the hatch struts and seat rails done but they pretty much said I was SOL on the dash. The loaner CX9 I got blew me away and had an excellent interior but in the back of my mind I wonder how durable Mazda interiors will be down the line.

I hope I'm posting on the right thread on this. I've been doing some searching on these forums and I saw a reference to crash testing on the Mazda5 and a handful of other comments here and there I've seen about crash ratings on it, too. I know that the controlled study crash tests are likely a good barometer for the safety, but it seems like the Mazda2 and Mazda3 score a lot better in the same years than the Mazda5. Oddly enough, I was leaning a bit towards the 5 over a 2 or 3, in part, due to a perception that the price/MPG trade off was going to buffered a bit by an increased safety factor due to the size. Does anyone with a Mazda5 have any comments with how they feel about it safety wise compared to similar cars/other Mazdas?

Size isn't a great factor for safety as long as you're not comparing a Miata to a 6, heh. The tests are right, perceptions are worthless in comparison.

According to IIHS, you can't compare safety scores across weight classes. I'm not knowledgeable enough to explain why. The Mazda 3 of that generation never got the small overlap test, for some reason.

Is there an easy way to add Bluetooth for playing music to my 09 MS3 GT? It'd be nice to be able to control playback from the steering wheel, but perhaps there is a module that you could just plug into the cigarette lighter in the center console, and run a short audio cable into the adjacent jack.

How often do you use your CD player?

Very rarely. I don't think I've swapped the few disks that have been in there out in years. Edit: I just got a Spotify family/premium subscription so it'd be nice to be able to use it without having a bunch of wires snaked around the dash, near the shifter.

It’s been a bit but I recall GROM had some stuff that did this. https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_60991_GROM-Audio-MAZ8U2P-GROM-USB2P-MAZ8.html https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_49911_GROM-Audio-Bluetooth-Streaming-Dongle-BTD.html This looks like it would get what you want. I don’t think there are any kits that give you steering wheel controls. Edit: the dongle says it does allow steering wheel controls, I’d definitely be interested to hear if that works. Look for a Bluetooth audio receiver. Amazon basics used to sell a module that works well in this application but they've apparently discontinued it. No way you're going to get steering wheel controls over Bluetooth without replacing the head unit though.

I don't think that's compatible with the 09 3, based on their compatibility list, but I'm not certain. Never the less, that's a cool product. Thanks for pointing it out!

There is a sub $10 line in cable you should be able to use if you have BOSE. No BT but it'll connect your phone.

Yeah I've got the Bose audio. Will that line in work for Android? I thought it was something like iPhone only.

Anything with a headphone jack (e.g. a phone) can connect to it with a 3.5mm cable like this. Essentially your car speakers become the "headphones" you would normally plug in to your phone.

I have this https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B073S6KR2G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and can say it works very very well. Mounted the control thing to the right of my steering wheel and ran the cables under the panel trim, connected to the cig charger and aux-in in the mid armrest. Only complaint is that the microphone is beyond useless so I never use it for handsfree phone calls. If I had known how useless the mic was, I would have skipped running the cabling around my cabin and just coiled everything in the armrest since I use my watch to prev/next/etc.

Do you guys use anti-seize on bolts? I've got the car jacked up so I can install coilovers. It looks really easy on the front. I forgot about getting a spring compressor for the back, though.

So CarPlay and Android Auto are being added to factory Mazdas. Dealers are charging CA$450 here in BC. Some are saying it's a free retrofit in the States. has a thread on it. https://www.reddit.com/r/mazda3/comments/9l2uwq/carplay_now_available_on_mazda3/

Mine is booked in tomorrow to get the upgrade. It's $520 NZD (~$335 USD) which is steep but apparently it takes 1.5 - 2 hours to install so not too bad once that's taken into account.

Which is a good thing since the USB ports can't frickin charge my phone on either the CX-5 or the Mazda 3. I will probably get it done at the dealership as I'm too lazy.

Weren't the 3 and 6 of those generations pretty similar/identical in body structure (outside the hatchback)? They did test the 6, so maybe assumed they could consider them both performing that test about the same. I still like that Mazda5 a lot, but something about that Poor rating on the side overlap made me nervous. It shouldn't, though, because it's not like my 90s Escort is likely going to be 'safer' in the same sort of crash (or any) crashes.

The Mazda5 is based off the Mazda3, however.

Bentai posted:Does the touchscreen work at all times with Car Play, or do you have to use the navigation knob thing to get around? That's controlled by the MZD connect system so functions the same as it always has (touchscreen only active when stopped) Fine by me, the screen is too high and too far back to safely use anyway. If you don't like the limitation then I believe it's possible to disable it by modifying the underlying firmware but I haven't looked into how difficult that is.
