It's really weird because when I downloaded it, it had less than 500 total downloads. It's like they accidentally released it early or something. When picking language the options are "Japanese" and "Other" but the Other turns out to be very well translated English.

What are the thoughts on the game Merchant? Ironically, I was browsing Facebook on my phone and I saw an ad for it being on Steam. Never heard of it before today but it seems well received.

What do you guys think of it, as a mobile game?

It's sort of an Adventure Capitalist style idle game except not really because unlike Adventure Capitalist you never have managers. You have heroes instead who you have to individually pick for each quest, even if it's something that can't be failed like picking herbs. Yes that does mean you have to reset that every 5 seconds. Yes you do have to grind up your heroes and your gold relentlessly to do anything new. No I didn't last long enough to figure out if that ever changes and you can unlock automation somehow. No I don't have any idea why people stuck with it longer than I did.

First pass was sort of wrong and unfair. Your character is a merchant who has to collect things to sell, and has to employ heroes to go on quests to find said things. It starts out with simple jobs anyone can do and more quests with new items get unlocked as you complete harder quests. Gameplay is largely about balancing the need for gold against the need to create new items for your heroes, and so on and so forth. However there is as mentioned no way I found to automate any of the early quests which leads to grind, and without so many levels on your hero and/or the best loot you can make given your crafting level, you're not beating new content.

One last thing: if you're wondering what the quests are like, this is not like Recettear where you actually fight the monsters. The quests are literally timers and your hero comes back with damage if he/she actually fought something powerful enough to get hits in. This is pretty much why the stuff about it being like Adventure Capitalist is only sort of wrong, it's more intensive than AC while having less flavor payoff.

Merchant is pretty good as a check it once in a while game. Once you get a little ways in and the timers get longer, that is.

The main gameplay loop is just send heroes at the monsters to get crafting mats so you can make gear to either sell or upgrade those heroes. Your crafters also have levels and crafted items are worth more than raw materials even after the cost to craft them. In other words you are just trying to always have dudes killin' and dudes crafting.

The game opens up a lot more past level 10 because heroes gain actual skills. By default your guys deal their attack and magic attack every turn, reduced by defense/magic defense (it's a formula like 100 defense = half damage, 200 = 1/3 damage). Once you get skills you might deal 1.6x attack with no magic damage, or deal damage and self buff, or block the next physical attack.

You also fight bosses in a party, so if a boss deals 2x physical to the center hero, you stick your warrior there and tell him to block all physical damage that turn.

Crafted loot comes with randomized bonuses like prefixes for added abilites and a +X suffix. So you end up crafting one item thirty times trying to roll it perfectly and selling the extras. You also have two prestiges per character that raise the max level, improve stats, and let you fight 3 and 5 monsters per quest.

Even with the expansion there's not much beyond this core gameplay loop but it's well made and satisfying. Each class has some unique abilities, like you can't. Build the assassin to ignore attack and max accuracy, which is dealt as defense ignoring true damage, or use a dark Knight + paladin team which self heals so you never need to burn potions on them.

So yeah good game but there isn't much you don't see right away so don't be afraid to make a judgement on it early.

im in australia and i think the trick to the ads depends on your connection screen. theres a little spinning icon on hte middle of the home screen when an ads loading and if you tap it goes away. i usually play where theres relatively bad reception and go straight from puzzle to puzzle so i think im just opening a new puzzle faster than the ad can pop up each time

I gotta hand it to that Picross game; I absolutely love how it auto completes your row/column, if you've put in the correct number of blocks.

I also appreciate that it does this whether you've got them in the right place or not, so you still have to be careful. The touch-and-drag functionality is awesome, too. I just wish I could quickly remove a mark or x by tapping on the square with the respective tool.

Been playing a good amount of Slime Room recently by the developer of Minute Quest and so on ever since I caught a video of it being played on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjblJUmZ6UM

The platforming is nicely done and the controls are sharp. What I like maybe most of all is that so far I've never felt that the levels were designed to force you always into taking one path. Sure, there's not always room on any given level for this kind of thing, but often I've made crazy jumps to skip parts of levels and it's very satisfying.

My favorite slime is the cockroach looking one. It's super cute even though it's high speeds run me into obstacles all the time.

Yeah, you only get an ad when you run out of lives, but you can restart a stage at any time and get full lives back. Honestly I have enough fun with it that the occasional ad (or-- more than occasional on the tougher stuff) doesn't bug me that much.

to start off that 2/2 on the top of the left side can use a bunch more X's, which will give you more spaces on the 5 of the far right of the top side.

In addition to what was said, on the row that's second from the bottom, two twos can't fit on the right side so there are two two on the left

Also on the fourth row down a 1 and a 2 can't fit in that first gap so you need to put the 2 and the other 1 and the second gap

I am not sure what you are saying here. the first 2 has to include the one box I have marked because of the 2nd column. Therefor the first 2 in row 2 has to be 1-2 or 2-3, so yeah I can X off 4th place on that line and also the last box on that row can be X'd along with the one above it.

I think the 2nd row from the bottom is the one I was missing and will get me to completion once I fill those in.

Once you X off that far right box, you now know the 5 in that final column has two more spaces that can be filled below the space you already have filled in. And since those are edge spaces you can extend them and add X's next to them.

Yeah i got it completed now. I knew I was missing something simple but i had looked at it so long I was just missing it.

Now i'm getting Mini-Boss puzzles where you have to complete 4 puzzles to get the entire picture. Of course they are random so who knows how long it will take to get all 4 puzzles of the same one. I so far have 3 different ones with 1 each.

Yeah, your character has a number of lives. It's a row of circles on the screen. Different characters have different numbers of lives, too. One of the later characters has really good jump AND move scores, but it only gets two lives.

Also, the game over ads I'm getting aren't annoying. I can hit back on my phone and get out of them right away, and the they're all boring local politician ads.

Once I realized it's just an ad for a game over, I have been a bit more careful and haven't really run into the ads. At first I just thought they were coming up randomly and it irked me. I'd still buy No Ads because this game is really good, but it's less annoying now.

Goddammit this Cello is way out of tune!
One thing I really like about Picross is when a puzzle suddenly clicks and then my brain goes "yes this is the proper solution". I have not yet used a hint in the Konami one. There have been some times I have gone "if only I had a small little clue where to start" but then I think logically about where the blocks can go and just guess. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

As they become more difficult the answers are more abstract though. You need to do a lot of figuring to never make a wrong move on the super difficult ones.

Kinda doubt they do any like that in the Konami game or any of the popular cutesy ones*

I mean development is dead but the game is still going, there were like 800+ games active when I picked it up last week. As a freeloader you can only play 1 game at a time and only order 4 things into the future but that's fine by me.

I did some of the tutorials and then jumped in it's fairly self explanatory. It's essentially a non-random diplomacy-eque subnautical combat game if that's your thing. You can fast forward and rewind time to see what our actions will result in so it's fairly easy to work out what's going on. It's the specialists which you have to really pay attention to, but again their abilities are factored into fast forwarding time.
