All the carriers offer pretty substantial military discounts if you or any family members on your plan were in military. All the new plans are moving away from work discounts otherwise unfortunately.

Short of buying a new screen, is there anything that can be done to 'restore' the oleophobic coating or whatever comes on the phone when it's new? I'm giving my wife my old phone and it's been used without a screen protector for 3 years, so I'm just curious if there are any options out there.

There's kits of oleophobic liquid you can get on Amazon. I can't comment on efficacy.

I dropped my phone and the corner of my Apple leather case got scuffed. I picked at it a little bit and it turns out that the actual leather part is less than a millimeter thick. It’s like the idea of leather glued to a plastic shell.

It’s like the idea of leather glued to a plastic shell. This is why I decided to go for the Apple silicone red case for my XS. I still like how it looks in the Apple minimalistic style, but the silicone doesn't tear up into bits whenever your phone takes a minor drop. The Apple leather case in saddle brown or cape cod blue is the best looking (and feeling) case for the XS/XS Max, by far, but you have to baby your phone and case like fuckin crazy or else the thing's torn to shreds after 6 months. Silicone is still fine and has some excellent colors like red, lavender gray, blue horizon, etc. It doesn't feel nearly as good in your hand, but it's with the trade-off in taking a minor hit. Silicone wears oddly as it ages though, the edges that see a lot of hand contact wear through an outer layer and get mega grippy. Lots of dust sticks to it too and it looks grungy. The paper thin leather ages a lot better.

I always opt for the white silicone case, out of nostalgia for my white iPhone 3G.

I went with a silicone case back on the... 7, I think? After like 6 months the silicone started delaminating from the plastic backing down at the lower corners and bubbling up a little bit, until it finally split, and exposed the plastic backing. I ditched it for a black leather case that lasted me all the way through the 8 as well. Went with saddle brown for my Xs Max without a second thought. Yeah, the leather cases wear and show it, but the difference is that they actually look better with wear.

I'm fat and my pants don't fit so the silicon case is too grippy to go in and out of my pocket easily. Leather is a good balance of grippy enough to not slide around like a wet bar of soap when you set it down but not too grippy IMO.

I’ve dropped my Apple leather case a few times and gravel shreds the corner of impact. Big ol gouges. And when I rub in some more of my overkill leather protector/conditioner, it manages to heal it pretty good.

Yeah the way Apple leather cases behave when dropped onto concrete, asphalt or even hardwood is super annoying, the shreds annoy the ever living gently caress out of me when I was used to liking how smooth the leather felt before. I've embarrassingly spent $50 on a new leather case when the old one annoyed me too much even though it was perfectly functional with a few tears and tatters. Spending that amount felt dirtier and stupider than losing more than that at a casino a time or two like a huge dumbass.

there's legitimately no good case (not even saddle brown you nerds) but the iPhone is too slippery to use without a case. my new strategy is to just buy Apple Care and break my phone dropping it like an idiot and have it replaced for $30.

Apple Leather Cases are good but they're also not worth $40 or $50 or whatever they cost.

I still like tech21 cases but I am a convert to the Official Apple Inc Leather and Silicone™ cases on the max. Also anker cables, screen protectors are dumb, and whatever other trope we repeat ad infinitum

The 8 is where it got ridiculously slippery. The camera bump with the slick glass made my phone seemingly fall off of flat surfaces. It has calmed down over the year I’ve had it but at the beginning it would seem like it was suicidal and trying to end it every time I turned around. Made it out with only a very small mark on the corner somehow, luckily, after not a small amount of drops.

Does anyone have the leather folio cases? For $100 I assume there’s a bit more leather in them?

The 6/7 is slipper because it's satin finish aluminium. The 8 shouldn't be as slippery because it's glass front and back. Although maybe the 4/5 was not slippery because it fit in your hand and had actual edges?

Original_Z posted:Does anyone have the leather folio cases? For $100 I assume theres a bit more leather in them? I'm not sure about the Apple ones, but the folios I've used have had thicker leather. I think part of the problem with the cases is you need that rigid plastic shell and there's only so much leather you can glue on there before you've got a rich overstuffed Corinthian leather monstrosity. With a folio or a slide-in pouch you have a bit more wiggle room. That doesn't mean the leather is any good though, just that there's more of it. iPhone 6s Plus. The cameras anti shake mechanism is busted and constantly on at full pace. If you hold the phone to your ear you can hear it clicking. This makes the camera unuseable. Is there a fix for this or do I just buy a new phone?

The camera module is replaceable, it's not soldered to the mainboard or anything. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+6s+iSight+Camera+Replacement/55514

You can try repeatedly banging the phone til it stops, it was a semi-common issue with them. The other free "fix" is to use another camera app that lets you toggle the OIS.
