What's crunch time like at Nintendo, do they have the same problem or do Japanese labor laws mitigate this somewhat?

Red Dead 2 has real time horse testicle shrinkage and horse digestive system... was this necessary?

I'm not saying not to buy Red Dead 2, just saying the labor practices of the games industry are shocking and horrible (I'm sure it was similar in Assassin's Creed and Starlink as well)

Nah the Japanese just work horrible soul crushingly long days all year long so there is no need for extra crunch

Almost all hype and interest in this thread for the game is because of StarFox

It would have showed up on the threads radar anyway, but yeah that is part of it. It helps that Ubisoft really knocked it out of the park last time they were able to use a Nintendo IP. And to all appearances, they made pretty good use of Star Fox so... It's a hard game to pin down, none of the comparisons really fit.

They get away with this poo poo because no matter how many workers they burn out, there's always a lineup down the block of people who are willing to break themselves because they've dreamed of working in the industry ever since they were five years old and they think their passion is going to make up for lack of money, respect and work/life balance

What's really disconcerting is that the exact same thing applies to commercial pilots

On one hand Satoru Iwata took a pay cut while the company was doing less than excellent, mainly so they wouldn't have to fire people and lose morale

on the other hand Masahiro Sakurai's arms calcified and almost fell off while he worked from 9am to 10pm every day on Smash Bros

That's the man's personal work ethic, and he seems excessive even for the Japanese work ethic

He's very much a man that doesn't like to leave his work unattended or unsupervised. He constantly comes back to a series that he's continually expressed fatigue regarding having to work on because he sees it as his responsibility.

Based on telltale events. They were breaking the law and just lying and not paying overtime.

Laws are dicey in an industry that routinely just fires everyone all the time. Need some strong whistleblower laws as well/first. And even then you can get blackballed from the industry sooooo? It ain't good

yeah that's the irony of leaving HAL because he was sick of making Kirby games all the time, and then being suckered into making an even bigger sequel-laden series that sells more than God itself. I know he keeps saying "this is my last one" but Ultimate really does feel like it's labeling itself as a finale.

There's also a cultural more in Japan where you don't leave before your boss so even if there's no work left to do for the day you're still sitting at your desk.

I think I read an anecdote where one of the guys developing a game in the US was in Japan for a meeting and while they still had stuff discuss the Japanese manager made a big show of leaving for the day with the guy before heading back and the entire office was gone in like 5 minutes.

I'm missing some history here. Was Sakurai involved with Kirby Star Allies?

edit: correction

edit: Huh, he wasn't. Weird. Anyway I was thinking of trading in Kirby while I can still get something for it and taking a chance on Starlink. Kirby was okay, but I 100%'d it in like 10 hours and I can't see myself ever going back to it.

he left right after Air Ride. Curiously he had nothing to do with Kirby 3 which was very different from Super Star.

Sometime after, he created a new company called Sora. Soon after that, Iwata announced SSB Brawl which was a surprise to Sakurai, and after the fact Iwata asked Sakurai to be the director. So right after making his own company he got guilted into making another fuckin Smash anyway lol.

Apparently you can't use a pro controller with The World Ends With You, literally just shuts it off. I guess I should have gleaned that from this thread, but it was already on it's way from Gamefly. Never played the original so didn't know the combat required a touch screen or whatever.

Going to be pissed if Starlink does the same thing, like ideally I just Amiibo tap the stuff and change it in the menus with a controller.

Wake up with the Kin-OH GOD WHAT IS THAT?!
Or on any cheap Android phone, really. Drastic is a really really good DS emulator with a bazillion customization options for the ~perfect experience~ no matter the title.

My favorite was reversing the top/bottom screens in Etrian Odyssey so that I could draw a map on top while the bottom half served as my navigation/battle screen with see thru controller inputs. I played it on a Note 4 and used stylus+on screen controllers, making it a very Authentic Experience

Not sure how well that would work with an action heavy game but surely it's better than the bullshit they cooked up for the switch version.

You can play Starlink digitally with a Pro Controller. You do need the joycons if you play with the physical toys since the controller grip interacts with the joycon's rails. You can still technically use the physical toys and play with a Pro Controller, you just need to scan toys that don't come with the base game with the joycon grip the base physical version comes with every 7 days. Alternatively, go all digital. [The Digital Deluxe version comes with everything that isn't a store/European preorder exclusive, which at this point means you only miss out on two ship reskins and a pilot that's currently only available in Europe]
