You don't need to read theory to be a good commie, but you do to agitate/organize correctly and make more good commies. You don't gotta figure everything out on your own, there's so much good assed thoughts out there already, and you can paraphrase them into 2018 language and fukken dropkick someone's false consciousness

AOC isnt just some random person looking to get active in socialist politics, shes the most visible and influential "socialist" in the US right now. its not reasonable for every single person active in a movement to understand every nuance or detail of the philosophy or tactics behind marxism, but its also not unreasonable to expect the leaders of a movement to at least try to understand as much as they can about their belief system

Prav posted:i find her statement to be condescending as gently caress that too. the people who recruited me to my party and who trained me to be a marxist were all women and people of color, many of whom had no college education. her statement is really the one that's classist since she seems to equate reading books with being bougie as if the nature and purpose of books somehow confounds and eludes working class folks

I bounced off of What is to be Done rather hard, but The Conquest of Bread was an absolute joy to read. I've also done Foundations of Leninism, as I mentioned, and that one I liked for its straightforwardness and clarity. I've only barely scratched Mao, but Analysis of the Classes in Chinese Society was also an easy read, as was Rocker's Anarcho-Syndicalism. And I'm not saying all this to brag or anything, but I do notice that a lot of the earlier left-wing writers are maybe even easier to read than more modern works. As far as AOC is concerned, I do have to agree with apropos to nothing in that while you might not expect everyone in a socialist movement to have "read a book", I think it's reasonable to expect that someone in a nominal leadership position to at least be able to point to something.

People should read books if they can. Someone has to be the guy that reads the books. But if you're a wage slave with kids it's okay if you don't read the books and just understand that capitalists steal your surplus value and oppress you. It's not complicated.

i had to tolerate years of smug posters chanting Please Work Out no matter what was going on in my life, so here's my spicy take: you do actually need to be reading books! it is good for you to read (some) books in the same way it is good for you to exercise. specifically you need to read nonfiction relevant to whatever causes you believe in so you don't embarrass your comrades out in the wild and you need to read literary fiction written by people whose backgrounds differ from yours to broaden your horizons and train your sense of empathy. and honestly? honestly??? in an age where basically every relevant leftist text is free online, barring some extreme circumstances, i can't say you're not a socialist because at the end of the day the things we do matter the most, but i'm inclined to say you're probably not a very good one. for gently caress's sake, five seconds of googling and i found a free audiobook of the communist manifesto. you should read more than posts, the news, and wikipedia pages! you should not be proud of not reading books! on the other hand i barely work out so do whatever you want

i train a lot so that post really speaks to me. of course you need theory to be a socialist and i only ever meant you don’t have to get that theory from dusty books about bread and grain. not to say im not morbidly interested in seeing where cargo cult (is that okay to say?) socialism goes
