I generally appreciate Jeph for being a white dude cartoonist who is trying to make a slice of life thing but actively acknowledges the change in culture as time goes on and maybe his depictions of poo poo is like super idealized but he's still diversifying elements of his world you know? Like not even counting Claire, the little story where Winslow gets a new body and doesn't realize his status has afforded him certain luxuries is pretty dope because Winslow has to learn to reach out to people or some of the points May makes about how prison records are too drat harsh or just even that little chat Emily gives Clinton about how people call her weird is nice. The dude evolves with the times and has actually come to give his world some thought and maybe it isn't all drama all the time but the smaller things actually matter and take time for wounds to heal and poo poo and it's just kind of nice for the stakes to be lower and to just tune in to see where everyone is currently at.

Literally the only thing I ever remember offhand about Willis's storyarcs, beyond ultracar being a thing is someone having a drink at a party and it ended up in some convulted multi-car crash poo poo so someone could "sacrifice herself."

Not to defend every storyline the guy's done (because his writing style's not really my cup of tea anymore), but that whole era was a confused fundy kid trying to figure out how the world worked by making comics. His characters go through so many crises of faith and obsess about if things like having sex outside of marriage or if having gay friends is okay because he was going through them.

He hasn't actually done that bit again so far as I know, but he has set up Ruth to be on a self-destructive path, which might lead into it somehow. Not that the logistics of pushing a car out of the way with your car to save a life while sacrificing your own makes any sense. Danny's the self-insert Willis seems to be most ashamed of anyways. Joyce and her sheltered upbringing is the part of the comic that Willis puts the most heart into, but he still feels like he's overcompensating for his past. The whole thing is just a big ol' soap opera, and I preferred back when there were goofy things like aliens and robots so the goofy melodrama at least fit in. And the whole porn thing kinda motivates him to make his characters couple as quickly and as varied as possible, which is weird.

She's actually "Carla Rutjen" in the college continuity. I suppose Ultra Car is actually fairly progressive in that she's one of the first members of the wave of "just because you're genderqueer or whatever, doesn't mean you're a special pure cinnamon bun, and in fact trans folks can be complete assholes just like anybody else."

Because the premise of Dumbing of Age is to take every character Willis has ever made to populate this college setting. Kinda like how Transformers keeps producing new media continuities and uses characters from every previous continuity to populate things. The original comic that he used to introduce Dumbing of Age kinda makes it all seem real cynical take on the idea of your one fated true love. Turns out people can end up forming romantic relationships with lots of people, or even find somebody exactly like their first partner right after a breakup.

I think my favorite moment in the comic so far is when Lorn points out that it probably isn't actually necessary to do anything to stop Gastaphar, because he's eventually just going to self-destruct on his own and will probably mostly only hurt people they already don't like, and Astra more or less says "yeah, but I'm going to anyway". That kind of self-awareness makes me smile.
