Not only will that allow you to write more poo poo off your taxes, you get to feel all white savior-y, pay people (theoretically) living wages, and even just up and disappear for a month to Palau when you're tired cosplaying the working poor. Anything to keep you busy while the guillotines are constructed and the world falls into environmental disaster.

This is amusing because basically the opposite is true. If you don't need to earn a living then you can dedicate towards the career of your choice a lot easier. Most people in some way end up settling a bit because of the necessity of having a paycheck; if they didn't have that burden and could just focus on their career of choice they'd be golden. And of course there is also the aspect that who the gently caress cares? If you don't need to earn a living then maybe don't take the spot of someone who does??

The military wants low-intelligence boot-licking uncreative conservative sociopaths, because they will happily follow horrifying orders and then get killed/die of opioid addiction after becoming disfigured like Good Americans. They don't want people with empathy, they might object to blowing up a village in the middle of nowhere and might speak up when a superior officer rapes them, leading to some slight inconvenience to the brass.

I don't know, if you only recruited people who super duper love killing I'd think you'd wind up getting a lot of fragged officers, I thought the whole "make it seem like you're helping people" thing was pretty clever in a sinister way since it would attract people with just enough humanity to not want to outright murder everyone, but with the kind of simplistic and naive worldview that's super responsive to the idea that the military is good and just and honorable and everyone against the military are the Bad Guys who must be stopped at any cost

the reason zeppelin used hydrogen was because the US, through a quirk in geology, has a stranglehold on the planet's helium supply. This is in the form of helium that was formed by radioactive decay in the earth's crust and then became trapped in natural gas deposits. Other than smaller earth deposits that are out there the only way to get it is I think distillation of cryogenic atmospheric gas and this was so expensive zeppelin had to say gently caress it and use hydrogen. in 96 the strategic helium reserve was ordered to sell everything off because apparently keeping the loving worlds supply of a noble gas that is comparatively difficult and expensive to get otherwise was dumb, and getting money would be better. This coincidentally matches up with new demands for helium beyond blimps and rocket coolant, in the form of coolant for MRIs and superconductors and stuff like that. There's conflicting info according to my 2 second morning google sesh, so either the reserve was more recently under W or Obama ordered to just sell basically everything not bolted down, or there was some form of serious disruption in the helium economy that reversed policy back to conservation of supply. Apparently other countries have begun developing their helium extraction plants and the whole thing is just flipped around? Anyway airplanes suck rear end and I'd rather take a scenic ride on an airship and be able to walk around like a human loving being instead of getting sardined into a dim can for 20 hours

Honestly it doesn't surprise me that anyone 30 or younger has a "gently caress capitalism" attitude. We grew up with only residual Cold War prejudices against socialism and capitalism has done us no favors. On some level I don't blame boomers for their attitudes because their glory days were at a time when it actually benefited them (if they were white). My dad and his dad were both successful small business owners by the time they were 25. When I was 25 I was working in a call center, living with 5 roommates, and using any extra money I had to pay off student loans. The grift has only gotten more brazen since then so it's no surprise that people in their teens and early 20s can see the writing on the wall.

Yeah, there was essentially a work stoppage in Vietnam among the rank and file soldiers, and any officers who attempted to force them to march out deeper into the woods and find some Vietnamese people to fight would get hosed up.
