In other news some study found that a high percentage (high sixties and up iirc) of veterinarians regularly experienced "high or very high" levels of distress due to 1) not being able to give animals care that was clearly required, and 2) "inappropriate" requests for euthanasia.

My wife's a vet and I can confirm this. She told me on like our second date that vets have a high rate of suicide, and I immediately took her to mean veterans, "No, veterinarians. We got several lectures and stuff in school about it."  The good news is, she doesn't deal with that nearly as much because she's not in a private practice (so if an animal can be saved and given decent quality of life, they do it) and she teaches now, so she still does surgery and stuff, but sees less heartbreak cases. Seriously though, that field is a loving heart breaker, I wouldn't be able to do it.
