I think the confusion is coming because I usually trust that, when presented with a controversial issue, politicians will do some combination of the least possible work and what they think will play best with voters, with internal principles only rarely winning out. My understanding, perhaps incorrect, is that while Portland has its fair share of chuds, it's really solidly left. I'm just struggling to see any political upside to what he's doing, even from a centrist perspective. I know I should probably stop trying to find some kind of logic in this, but it's bugging the crap out of me.

centrists think cops are good so challenging cops in any way is simply out of the question. considering the cops pretty much covered up a nazi sniper nest and at the time merely took away their guns and sent them on their way, its pretty clear the problem is that doing anything about the fascists requires doing something about the cops who are in bed with them first

portland is only socially left, not economically so, the majority of the population is centrist liberal boomers. it only has that reputation because it was much more left than the rest of the country on gay issues throughout the 90s but the rest of the country has caught up with it at this point and theres been a huge influx of rich liberals looking for a whiter city to live in than san francisco over the last 15 years
