An extra ten percent is always worth a few extra points, and might be the difference between 40 and 50 or 50 and 60 further down the road when something else breaks.

Absolutely. I have a loving laundry list of ailments and issues. It took a lot to get me from 80 to 100. Think of it as the XP grind in MMOs. First few levels are easy, maxing takes goddamn ages because of the poo poo required. Like how completing a quest near those levels is like a drop in an ocean.

Getting this rating literally makes zero difference at the moment however. Due to the math my 40% rating would still be 40%.

Even then, a 0% rating is the VA being dismissive basically. Also, I was 84% at VA math for a loooong time. Like literally a 10% rating on one of my 0% items would have pushed me to 90%.

Two things I wanted to ask: 1) I got hit by a car on Friday while on my bike, messed up my back and wrists really good, so I had to go to the VA hospital. My lawyer said the VA will want to recoup the costs from the driver because they're totally at fault, so I'll need to help the VA with that. The ER docs obviously gave no shits about who was at fault and didn't charge me anything, so is the VA really gonna try to recoup their costs? I guess I don't care too much, I've just never heard of it before. 2) I had to travel to New Haven, and I forgot to bring my diet pills (paying out of pocket for a prescription at an external pharmacy). Anyone know if the local VA can spot me a handful of Welbutrins so I don't go into withdrawal? I've wandered into a VA before and told them that I left meds at home and they spotted me an extra 3 days supply. I don't take anything even remotely addictive though so your mileage may vary.

It’s a newer thing they’re doing but some VAs have a walk-in mental health clinic usually m-fri during business hours. At the very least check out the mental health clinic and explain the situation. Worst case scenario the ER if they have one. Docs hate doing it, but they’ll almost always at least spot you a few days/week worth.

Does anyone know if VA Healthcare is actually considered "health insurance"? I got hit on my bicycle by a car in Massachusetts, and there's a law that covers my medical bills up to $2000 "if I have insurance", or $8000 if I have "no insurance". I want to go to physical therapy conveniently near my work or home, not to the random mountain summit the VA would send me on an expedition to, and if I'm going for more than a month then I'd easily pass the $2000 mark.

If you served in a combat zone you get five years of health insurance via the VA. That's why you're getting letters (which will stop eventually) and yes it counts. After that expires, you're on your own unless you're above a certain disability rating.
