It does seem like there are legitimate sources for Khashoggi having a history with the Muslim Brotherhood. He was an active member at some point and seems to have stayed at least somewhat sympathetic to them, though it seems like the extent of his sympathy depended heavily on who he was talking to at the time. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/14/world/middleeast/jamal-khashoggi-saudi-arabia.html quote:By the time he reached his 50s, Mr. Khashoggi‘s relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood was ambiguous. Several Muslim Brothers said this week that they always felt he was with them. Many of his secular friends would not have believed it. https://www.spectator.co.uk/2018/10/death-of-a-dissident-saudi-arabia-and-the-rise-of-the-mobster-state/ quote:In truth, Khashoggi never had much time for western-style pluralistic democracy. In the 1970s he joined the Muslim Brotherhood, which exists to rid the Islamic world of western influence. He was a political Islamist until the end, recently praising the Muslim Brotherhood in the Washington Post. He championed the ‘moderate’ Islamist opposition in Syria, whose crimes against humanity are a matter of record. Khashoggi frequently sugarcoated his Islamist beliefs with constant references to freedom and democracy. But he never hid that he was in favour of a Muslim Brotherhood arc throughout the Middle East. His recurring plea to bin Salman in his columns was to embrace not western-style democracy, but the rise of political Islam which the Arab Spring had inadvertently given rise to.

Exactly how much money do they think food stamps and various other insufficient programs for dirt poor people cost? Amazon probably did more to reduce those numbers than anything else. You can't just whack the corporate tax by a third and come back with more money. It doesn't work. It has never worked. It will never work. Most of these new jobs are paying so little that the new people working aren't hitting the minimum threshold to pay taxes and the people that got more money because of the tax cuts are paying less because you cut their taxes! How loving stupid are these people? Every loving time the Dems take the oval they have to spend two years unfucking what the GOP did to blow up the debt and tank the economy while simultaneously trying to stave off a government shutdown and raising the debt ceiling. Every. Goddamn. Time. Like, I can almost understand it in the early aughts (almost), how do they keep buying this lie? debt_growth_by_year.png

Amazon probably did more to reduce those numbers than anything else. They keep buying it because “the economy” is a massive, nebulous, and complicated subject which no one really understands. It’s easy to dazzle people with buzzwords and unverifiable numbers. More importantly, the complexity of the subject makes it easy to mislead people who only ever hear your side of the argument. There are plenty of arguments that can be made which sound compelling until someone from the other side steps in and points out the flaws. If you never hear someone step in to point out the flaws, the original argument can seem very strong. When things go south, they drop more imaginary numbers and buzzwords on you to make sure you place the blame on something or someone other than the real cause. This works because they’ve taught you that all other sources of information are seething nests of lying snakes out to deceive you and destroy your way of life.

This works the other way, too - Anyone else remember the later Obama years, where Hannity and Rush would routinely say "well they say that the economy's recovering and unemployment is at 4%, but this report on my desk here says that when you factor in some other stuff, unemployment is ACTUALLY at 11%! So much for hope and change, am I right?" It's just another constant stream of "our side good, their side evil and bad", only with numbers instead of immigrants or gay people.

True, if a freedom is so precious then it being so common must surely threaten it? Based on this logic, I propose strong gun control legislation, to safeguard that which is more important than even the right to vote.

a FReeper posted:It's how our government works. As some people have been doing, whining, stomping our feet and demanding that our President do it all by himself against a majority Democrat House or Senate won't work. As opposed to the last two years with majorities in both houses where they I don't understand why Trump needs Congress to give him wall money anyway, didn't he say something about Mexico paying for it? Maybe I'm misremembering but I could swear I heard that on the news every day for months. Also FYI a pipe bomb was found in George Soros' mailbox tonight, fortunately the guy that identified what it was got it away from people and law enforcement were able to dismantle it without detonating. So close to fixing all of the problems in the country! I bet that caravan would have gone straight home if they found out there were no checks for them at the end. Except for the criminals, MS-13, and Middle-Easterners it's riddled with.
