Mister Facetious posted:The climactic end to Richard Roberts' Please Don't Tell My Parents YA fiction series was pretty fun. The author has said he has ideas for side stories, but is done with Penny. I didn't like the last few books, because I felt that they sidelined the rest of the Inscrutable Machine for the new characters who I didn't find as interesting. If you want more from the narrator, I really like the story "Not Your Sidekick" which is more Superhero stuff, and "It's Not Like It's a Secret" which is a romance. Also she narrated a Mulan story, but I didn't have the credits for it so I didn't pick it up to see if it's any good.

Emily Woo Zeller also narrates Molly Tanzer’s “Vermillion,” which is flawed but extremely charming. Kind of a cross between a Western and an urban fantasy.

She's up there with Emma Galvin and Erin Spencer on my favorite audiobook narrators. Also on the list of my favorite audiobook narrators: Moira Quirk, Sarah Drew, Saskia Maarleveld, Amanda Ronconi, Kate Rudd, Elizabeth Evans, and Jennifer Ikeda, and Amanda Dolan. That's my top 10, not really in any order, beyond Zeller Galvin and Spencer being my top 3.

I just realized Dresden Files narrator James Marsters will be at my local Comic-Con this October. I wonder if he'd sign my phone? I think I'll ask him to sign his portrait 'Harry Dresden - Wizard for Hire' Mister Facetious fucked around with this message at 05:30 on Oct 4, 2018 |

I'm listening to The Baroque Cycle again and Simon Prebble is an absolutely insanely good narrator, doubly so given the fact that he has to do like 100 voices for the series and makes every single one of them memorable.

I subscribed to Audible earlier this year and I have 5 unused credits. I just wanna be sure, I can buy 5 books today and cancel and still be able to listen to all of my books right?

Yes. You have a library, like on a console. You always have access to your purchases, and can redownload at any time.

I have the opposite question... I have 5 credits as well. Can I cancel and still buy books down the line with my banked credits?
|

No you lose the credits when you cancel. I think you can "pause" your subscription though and keep them for a month or two.
|
# ? Oct 12, 2018 13:39 |

Yes, you can pause your subscription for up to 36 months. You can only do it once over a 12 month period. There is also the hidden "Silver" plan. It's essentially half of a regular subscription. Instead of $14.99 and 1 credit for month, that happens every 2 months. Edit: There used to also be a "Light" plan that was only $10/year. It basically just let you keep your banked credits and participate in member sales, which is good enough for most people. I think you have to contact customer service to get that deal. Be aware that you can only bank 12 credits, also that the returns system is very good, even if hidden in my account.

There's a 2-for-1 sale right now, not a ton to choose from but I wound up grabbing books 2 and 3 of Red Rising for one credit. I think this ends tonight so hop on if you want anything. https://www.audible.com/special-promo/2for1

It told me I’d lose them if I canceled so I just bought the books i was gonna buy anyway. Unless I’m missing something it didn’t seem like there was any drawback in just re subscribing when I get through them later on.

Same. Thanks Boris and thread! FWIW they did offer me the Silver plan detailed above when cancelling but not the Lite, though maybe I didn’t play my cards right for that. This was over chat since the web page wasn’t working all the way.

It’s narrated by Bronson Pinchot who turns out to be an excellent reader. He does good accents and his cadence is soothing. Based on this I also just got done with A Man on the Moon, also read by ol’ Balki. I recommend this too if you’re into space. It’s a cool telling of the entire Apollo Program story.

Today’s Audible daily deal is Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time. If you like science fiction at all, and especially well-written sci based on a fascinating and creative premise, I can not recommend this book enough.

It turns out I didn’t cancel my audible membership when I was asking after all. Not really sure what happened cause I thought I did but I don’t see it in my emails either. It did ask me if I wanted to downgrade to silver plan, or if I wanted to take a 30/60/90 day break instead.

Well I had no reason to check it since canceling wasn’t going to put money in, just keep money from going out, and I wouldn’t have been charged for weeks anyway. I got the email from Audible saying it charged me/heres your new credit so I checked. It’s no big deal really and it’s canceled now. Just wanted to say that if anyone else was was thinking of canceling they do offer the silver membership or a free break when you try to cancel.

One of the Audible Originals free books of the month: By: John Woolf, Nick Baker Narrated by: Stephen Fry Not credited: Voice actors doing dramatizations, and excerpts by historians/scientists/etc. Very fun book, feels like a BBC documentary in audio form.

Steven Fry, an upper class man and member of the Groucho club, has a real nostalgic poverty porn yen for the Victorian era, and although he does it beautifully, it’s never not been a bit weird.

I stopped by here to grab a recommendation so I'll leave one as well. The audio book for The Right Stuff must have been mentioned in this thread before but it is 10/10 absolutely so good. Also Endurance by Scott Kelly was 8/10 and worth checking out. I was surprised at the very nice pacing that helps keep your attention and Scott has a great reading voice for 1.5x speed if your reader supports it.

I can't get the Expanse on Netflix in my country, are the books it's based on any good?

I thought the first 3 were great, especially the 1st and 3rd. Have not read the rest yet. Really fun popcorn / action sci-fi, nothing super deep (I mean this as a complement) but still has interesting ideas about the future and a probably pretty accurate depiction of how multi-planet life will be. FWIW I did not like the first season of the TV show, it did not do the book justice for me, gave up after the 1st episode of the second season. Also I read them, not audio books so I can't comment on the narration.

Mister Facetious posted:I can't get the Expanse on Netflix in my country, are the books it's based on any good? I've finished the first one yesterday. It was well narrated and even though you'll be familiar with most of the story beats it's still pretty good. There are a lot of small details in the books that can't make it to the show. I'd say that Amos in the show is perfectly cast. In the book he's a good character, but Wes Chatham nails the character perfectly. The books so far don't deviate a ton from the show, but they're still great.

Books get better and better by each one, until 4th. Then it kind of backslides but only for that 4th. Then 5th through 7th get as interesting as the third one was again. It doesn't help that the 4th has a worse narrator than the others. Thankfully the original returns for the rest.
