I can't resist stuff about Misha Mansoor/Periphery because they are so far away from what I enjoy that I consider their success absurd. Anyhoozle I was reading some interview:

https://thehub.musiciansfriend.com/artist-interviews/misha-mansoor-talks-signature-peavey-invective-120-amp-gear-more

When this caught my eye:

Musician's Friend lool posted:

The HUB: Was the invective.120 an expansion on the amp you were using or a combination of some others you had used? Or did it just come to you as something that you haven’t seen out in the world?

MM: It was actually a little bit of all that. As I said, I’m a big gear nerd. I currently have … like 19 amps. I live in an apartment so it’s kind of ugly, but I have a lot of amps and I always have … there was a lot of stuff that I hadn’t really seen on contemporary amps.

I couldn't believe this guitar nerd icon isn't selling enough records/merch/signature products to still be living in an apartment. Lo and behold from another inteview:

https://www.metalinsider.net/news/periphery-guitarist-misha-mansoor-no-ones-selling-any-records-anyways-now-its-all-gone-its-all-disappeared

Metal Insider lmao posted:

How do people that are in guitar bands… What do they need to do differently nowadays than they did 20 years ago?

Mansoor: “Make income outside of the band. This is what I do with the signature products. It’s my way of being able to make a living. It’s my way of being able to make a life for myself. People think sometimes, ‘Periphery is achieving a little bit of success.’ We’re not a massive band but we do alright. But we make no money. And people have a really hard time grasping that.

Because even as we started making more money you’ll gross a lot and net nothing. The ability to monetize music has just dropped by a factor of god knows what – 10, 100, whatever. But the cost of touring has stayed the same. It just means that you net very little.

And then if you want to have a nice production like us, you don’t want to just go barebones on everything. You want it to be an enjoyable show, so you spend money on that.

So yeah, we’ll gross a fair bit but we won’t net a lot. We did a five-week tour in Europe last year, we walked away with nothing. And that’s a reality of this – European tours are very expensive.

US headliners will do pretty well but you can’t do them that often because everybody’s touring – oversaturated market, your guarantees will stagnate or go down.

So it’s just not a viable source of income for most bands. Some bands are more fortunate in that, they’re sort of more merch bands and they can just really kill it on merch. But it’s tougher and tougher.

One way of looking at it is, let’s say for the sake of argument, your ability to earn is decreased by a factor of 10 thanks to Spotify and downloading and whatever. You were making a million dollars per year, well now you’re making $100,000. So yeah, you can still make a living on it, you won’t be living as lavishly as before, but it’s still viable.

But if you were making $100,000 before, now you’re making $10,000. That’s not a lot.

I’m 33 and as people start to get older… When I was in my 20s, I didn’t mind sleeping on floors or whatever. Now I’m not gonna be doing tours while I’m slumming in a van, it’s just not fun anymore. It’s not worth it. We all paid our dues already.

So it’s just one of those things where for us music is just becoming more and more about just doing it for fun. But it’s because we all saw this coming. We had no delusions. When I started the band, it was like I’m playing nerdy metal, no one cared about us at all. No one cared about this style of music.

I would have been amazed to get even 100 people to come to the show. So it was like, ‘I’m gonna need to figure out some other way to make a living. This is just gonna be for fun.’ And I think that is more true than ever now.

This is a touring band that has 4 studio albums and a strong international fanbase and homey has to gently caress with an attenuator so the old lady in 2E doesn't call the cops again.

I find them interesting for the same reason as you and yeah, those dudes have a bunch of side products/endorsements that probably in aggregate keep them going, and it's probably just enough

edit: in contrast, I remember recently watching a documentary about Ronnie Lane and it was talking about how the members of the Faces were each getting like £10,000 a show in the 70s

Periphery isn't something I'd regularly listen to, but I first heard of them when I saw them open for Deftones several years back and they were surprisingly awesome. I usually couldn't give a poo poo about most opening bands, but they were killer live.

That's pretty hosed, do Periphery have a road crew or do they do all of the sound/set-up poo poo themselves? I can see if they have a crew they could essentially make nothing, but if it's just them on tour that's ridiculous.

Also now I know why Buckethead tours alone with a god drat iPod.

i don't have too much sympathy for the periphery dude not just because his music blows but pretty much every band that makes music for dorks has day jobs, and that was the case even back when people were buying cds and poo poo

You can definitely make good money playing whatever nerd music but not just by touring. You have to offer and be involved in everything industry related. Albums, YouTube videos, merch, pedal/amp/etc comnections, lessons. It’s a different world and I’d like to think we’re seeing it get to a better place now after years of unfortunate struggle.

Your human mentality cries out for vengeance and thrives on the violence you say you can hardly endure.
On tour at the moment with an evertune-equipped guitar and it’s changed my life, I straight up haven’t had to tune at all during the set and we’re doing our long set at the moment. Feels good man.

I still broke a string though so apparently my acidic sweat is still an issue.

Re: periphery, they’re the poster boys for how to have a career doing nerdy as gently caress metal imo. Each of the guys has a bunch of different revenue streams (horizon devices, peavey/Jackson/Ibanez/prs sigs, VST drums/amps, mixing, soundtrack writing etc etc). I don’t like periphery at all but they all have very smart business sense and seem like very nice guys. Also I learned a shitload from nolly’s episode of nail the mix so I do recommend yo

Making money selling yourself as a hired gun is always going to put way more food on the table than almost anything original you do unless you...
  1. ...strike a nerve with a large enough demographic (and I loving hate using that word, but them's the breaks)
  2. ...are financially smart
  3. ...are possibly crazier than a fox / shithouse rat / (pick an artist name of somebody both musically incredible but also insane)
  4. ...know people
  5. ...have crazy loving luck
I've been lucky + masochistic enough to earn enough money to actually be more or less set for life unless I suffer from something that requires me to have a multi-million medical procedure or some poo poo. Nowadays, I'm semi-retired as a recording engineer, but still busy as a composer/songwriter/arranger/musical-handyman and while I've been playing more and more live in the last 2 years than in almost a whole decade, most of my live-playing fees come from making around 2k a month playing in weddings/wedding receptions (or however the after-wedding thing is called in US). This is in México, by the way. So the fact that I'm earning in a month what a US-teacher or a US-call-center dork makes is enough to actually make me consider quitting my office job. But I still have that.

Mostly because, in the 8 hours I'm in there, I only have like 2 hours of actual work, so the rest of the time, I actually either practice guitar/violin, write music, check taxes, learn a new language, polish my programming skills, etcetera.
