https://www.buzzfeed.com/aliceworkman/the-afp-has-completed-its-investigation-into-the-awu-raid

quote:

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has confirmed the investigation into the media being tipped off about the police raids on the Australian Workers' Union's (AWU) offices has been completed, and no-one has been charged.

...

The AFP referred its investigation into the "unauthorised disclosure of government information", which carries a maximum two-year jail term, to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) on August 20.
Deputy commissioner Leanne Close told Senate Estimates on Monday that from that date on, the AFP considered its investigation completed, pending any requests from the CDPP for further inquiries to take place. Close said she didn't know whether the CDPP had requested more information.
Labor senator Doug Cameron asked in estimates why no charges had been laid, given someone had admitted to the leak.
AFP commissioner Andrew Colvin said: "Public commentary by someone that in people's minds may look like an admission to a crime is a long way from the rules of evidence in terms of what is required from us to launch a prosecution."
Colvin would not answer whether he had sought advice over whether to charge anyone over the leak. He also refused to rule out whether Cash or Keenan had been investigated, interviewed or given witness statements.
The hearing for the education and employment committee starts on Wednesday

Maybe I haven't found the smoking gun yet but seems to me Rudd is making the big claim without the evidence to back it up. It could well be that Swan was playing both sides but it still looks like Rudd is chucking a tantrum. What does he base this claim (that Swan was AWOL during the mining tax confrontation between May and June 2010) on?

It's a bit simpler than you think: Rudd is a paranoid and dictatorial non-delegator who thinks he was hard done by after everyone had had enough of his poo poo, even for a popular PM. Imagine how loving annoying you have to be to be kicked out like that. And Rudd 2.0 learnt nothing from the mistakes of Rudd 1.0, and he was dumped again. During that time no-one could get him to consult, let alone stop him from undermining everyone from Ministers down with surprise policy zig-zags. None of this was even reported until well after the fact and this damaged Gillard's leadership from the start.

Although this kind of griping isn't unknown from former PM's, when Rudd rewrites history like this to big up himself and put others down, it's especially pathetic.

It's about finding that next group of core players we can win with in the next 6, 8, 10 years. Let's face it, it's hard for 20-, 21-, 22-year-olds to lead an NHL team. Look at the playoffs.

I think mentally Rudd hosed himself up because micromanagement and politics don't mix but initially I think he was a very forward thinking Prime Minister in the 1.0 version and if he had better people skills Australia would be a very different place to the Howard worshipping backwater gently caress land we are today.

Govt on track to spend $2 million on legal fees this year to fight bringing sick kids to Australia

quote:

The Department of Home Affairs has spent almost half a million dollars in legal fees in three months responding to court applications for urgent medical transfers of asylum seekers and refugees on Nauru.

The amount revealed at Senate estimates on Monday afternoon eclipses the total for the entire previous year, and applies to about 37 cases – sometimes involving multiple people – brought to court since 1 July.

A growing number of critically ill people held on Nauru have sought legal intervention to access required healthcare unavailable on Nauru. At least 11 – and as many as 14 – children have been transferred to Australia in recent days alone.

In Senate estimates on Monday, the department’s first assistant secretary, Pip De Veau, revealed the total cost of responding to such applications in the first quarter of 2018-19 was approximately $480,000.

I think it's the total opposite. We've basically given ourselves cowpox in the form of Tony Abbott to inoculate us from smallpox in the form of Trump. We already had a burl with a moronic strongman and we all agree it was poo poo. The only way to futureproof Australia from becoming garbage was to be garbage already.
