Is a $100 purchase requirement for the 40145 promo set enough to make it attainable or is my store going to get like 5 of them which will be gone the second they open to people who camped

If my experience getting it a few years ago is anything like how they do it now, it was the first 50 or 100 people through the door who got it.

Very cute. I also like that they're purposely sprinkling sand green and dark red in more sets.

Limoting this set (alledgedly) to 4500 is meh. I don't see the point. They make a ton more money if everyone could get it with a purchase.

Let's hope that it comes to Europe as well I want one for the christmas collection. Much more festive than the firehouse imo

Odd that they have two of the sets this year. Usually it's just one with a $100 purchase. Kinda kicking myself over ordering the fire station now. I think I'd rather lose the potential $5 and get the giveaway.

Maybe I will just return it and order again. Hmmm...

Get there 2-3 hours before store opening and you "should" be okay. It's PA, right? Might want to park your keister there the night before.

Orrrr, just buy it on BL and save yourself the hours of waiting. What's worth more to you? $40 or a few hours sitting on the floor of a mall in the cold?

They're a real blast. I've been to several of them to help my dad out with the GBC stuff, mostly BrickFair Virginia, and all the people are great, the events are great, the loads of stuff on display is really awesome to look at. So many people put an incredible amount of time and creativity into their displays.

Where do they get all the balls for these things anyway? I have a couple of footballs and basketballs from a sports line back when I was a kid but that was 2002 or so. Are Lego still making them for anything?

I think there's a few Friends sets with similar balls, but most of the balls they use are from the sports sets from 2000~2003 ish. They're not cheap on Bricklink anymore.

BTW, I've met the guy who does those videos (Akiyuki). He's a robotics engineer and is pretty insane, but in a good way. If you ever get a chance to see one of his displays in Japan, I highly recommend doing it.

There are a lot of people making GBC balls now, and some people use marbles. The soccer and basketballs are a dollar apiece, so they're pretty much a no option for newcomers.

... Insert something brilliantly witty here.
Akiyuki is special amongst GBC stuff that his modules are also always reliable and fast, use a huge amount of novel motion methods, and don't tend to leak. He blows most of the US ones out the water.

I'm really tempted to make a GBC module or two sometime, or some other perpetual motion machine / kinetic sculpture, but first thing I need to do is re-sort a lot of stuff.

Also, the 40 minute video taught me how valuable those silver headlight cups are, which is nice - because I got two of them in a 2 pound grab-bag of Lego that also had a (tested, working) micromotor in it. HAUL SUCCESSFUL.

In the spirit of Halloween, what are some sets that fit the theme?

Monster Hunters is obvious, of course. And the seasonal sets they have put out. But what else?

I can think of a couple.

There are a couple of the Studios line that work. Coincidentally, these were basically remade into MH sets:

https://brickset.com/sets/1382-1/Scary-Laboratory
https://brickset.com/sets/1381-1/Vampire-s-Crypt
https://brickset.com/sets/1380-1/Werewolf-Ambush
https://brickset.com/sets/1383-1/Curse-of-the-Pharaoh

A couple castle sets:

https://brickset.com/sets/7029-1/Skeleton-Ship-Attack
https://brickset.com/sets/5372-1/Skeleton-Chariot
https://brickset.com/sets/7092-1/Skeletons-Prison-Carriage

There are other Castle sets that almost fit the theme, due to skeletons but they also have extra stuff that isn't quite right.

The last I can think of is:

https://brickset.com/sets/75904-1/Mystery-Mansion

Can you think of any others?

I seem to recall that some older castles came with those baller glow in the dark ghosts. Black Monarchs ghost came up in a quick search. Bricksets tags aren't working for me though so I can't pull any more info, though it appears from Brickipedia that they appeared in most 1990s castle themes.

That's what I meant about Castle sets that almost work. There are a lot of castle sets with ghosts and skeletons and trolls and things. But they are more fantasy themed. The three castle sets I linked are all part of this, but two of them are just skeleton things while the third has the awesome skeleton boat that works on its own.

You could also throw Silent Mary into this group. But it's poo poo. It looks okay but is so flawed.

Black Monarchs Ghost was just a knight on horseback and a ghost in a shed. You could probably also add in some of those egyptian themed ones that I think came out in my dark ages if you want to make a Mummy themed scary thing.

I wish I was around during monster hunters, that poo poo is so my jam. That's the closest I've ever come to getting a lepin was the house, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Just wish they weren't so expensive on the secondary market.

Only the haunted house and zombies are expensive. And the zombies is just because of a couple heads and a body, for the most part.

You could get most of the MH stuff for under $100 total.

The soccer balls used to be a lot cheaper back when GBC was just starting out so buying in bulk on Bricklink and such wasn't all that expensive. Then it was a matter of knowing the right people who still had access to them in bulk, and getting donations directly from LEGO, etc. The AFOL scene has quite a lot of avenues to get parts in bulk directly via various reimbursement programs, donations to clubs, the yearly bulk buy, etc. and soccer balls or friends balls have been available through some of those avenues.

Tom for example has five-ish of the old large pick-a-brick cups filled with mostly soccer balls with a few basketballs and friends balls thrown in for good measure, and that set is what you see used in most of the big convention videos.

It’s a really neat look but one of the flimsiest, most frustratingly unsupportive builds I’ve ever done. Oh well, maybe I can find a way to beef up some of the connections.

I’m not even talking flimsy to play with. I’m talking nearly impossible to even snap a piece on without 10 other pieces falling off. Lots of single stud connections, most offendingly at a thigh joint just below the knee. So any time you want to bend the knee, instantly half the thigh just comes off.
