The boom time is over and we're now officially experiencing the "house price fall we had to have", according to Deloitte Access Economics's latest business outlook.

It has found what many had been predicting: prices are dipping as interest rates are rising, with our biggest cities feeling the winds of change most keenly.

"Our house prices here in Australia had streaked past anything sensible by way of valuation," said Deloitte partner Chris Richardson.

"Now, finally gravity has caught up with that stupidity and prices are falling.

"In Sydney and Melbourne, housing prices are falling by over $1,000 a week."

And this is just the beginning.

Newscorp posted:

BRISBANE letterboxes have been flooded with nearly 10 million ratepayer-funded brochures and pamphlets featuring Lord Mayor Graham Quirk’s face, new figures reveal.

The revelation comes amid new figures that show Brisbane City Council’s television advertising budget surged by more than 1000 per cent in just 12 months.

The Labor Opposition has slammed the expenditure as a blatant misuse of public funds to promote the Lord Mayor’s re-election campaign.

In total, the council spent $590,406 on television advertising in 2017-18, up from just over $50,000 the previous year.

More than $251,000 has already been spent on television ads this financial year.

Meanwhile, more than 9.5 million pamphlets and brochures featuring a photo of Cr Quirk were distributed to Brisbane homes in 2017-18.

This included 5.96 million Living in Brisbane newsletters.

Council Opposition Leader Peter Cumming said the LNP administration were neglecting basic services, like the reconstruction of footpaths, to fund the ads.

“You don’t see (Prime Minister) Scott Morrison or (Premier) Annastacia Palaszczuk spending money on TV advertising and sending 9.5 million brochures a year in Brisbane,” he said.

“They are bound by strict rules Cr Quirk refuses to adopt.

“Brisbane residents will be disgusted to learn the ratepayer-funded TV advertising bill has increased a whopping 12 times in a year so Cr Quirk can appear on prime-time TV.”

One of the more expensive advertising blitzes was the council’s “Growing Your Brisbane Lifestyle” campaign, which included $251,757 in television advertising and $91,544 in mailout ads.

More recently, Cr Quirk came under fire for appear in ratepayer-funded television ads spruiking the council’s planning reforms.

A spokeswoman for Cr Quirk defended the council’s advertising expenditure as a “critical way” to provide information to residents.

“Advertising activities for the entire Council organisation represent much less than one per cent of the overall budget,” she said.

The Australian Industry Group said the rallies would disrupt business and leave employees out of pocket, and called on all sides of politics to reject "the ACTU's self-interested campaign".

"The rallies are aimed at convincing the Labor Party to commit to making sweeping changes to the Fair Work Act if elected, to give the unions a lot more power," the group's chief executive, Innes Willox, said.

"Senior union leaders have expressed the view that they see no problem in breaking laws that they do not agree with. This strikes at the heart of our democracy and the rule of law.

"Given this attitude of union leaders, it would be reckless to give unions even more power over the economy."

Another thing I like about Australia: unions exist, people join them, they have power and can demand concessions from bosses. In my home country, unions are villified as mobsters and are illegal in many workplaces.
