That was gandalf's original plan. It's why he wanted to go north through the misty mountains, and then just before they got separated in the mines yelled "fly you fools".

It’s cause hobbits are little weiners. They don’t know what to do with power. The Eagles are basically gods.

I actually tried watching solo and was shocked at how muddy and ugly and hard to see the characters were in the beginning. Thought maybe it was my tv? And switched to fury road which still looks amazing and said nope, this is Ron Howard's fault

It's ok if you don't understand why last Jedi is much better than rogue one and the excrementable force awakens, but let's all at least admit the last great blockbuster was fury road

To be fair, a lot of rogue ones problems was the studio flipping out over space Iraq, deleting most of the two lead characters personalities and then throwing in a meaningless fanservice space battle at the end to cover up for the butchering of the first 2/3rds of the movie . So it wasn't a giant directorial fuckuo like force awakens was where Abrams said you know how you make a good movie, is you only make half of one and say come back next time!

Well you're correct about Fury Road, so your many other transgressions are forgiven.

Now let's talk about Blade Runner 2049.

Well I think it's a great movie with great cinematography. Re: Pale Fire, the baseline test stuff made for a really cool scene (I haven't read or otherwise explored Pale Fire and have no opinion on the references in that regard). I thought the uprising stuff was dumb but thankfully it wasn't at all central to the plot. A movie about that whole thing would probably be very bad. Fundamentally, 2049 was an exploration of what it means to be human today, and specifically, it delved into the various ways in which both technology and technocracy alienates people not only from one another but from any apparent individual purpose.

Also, it would be great if Harrison Ford would just perma-retire at this point.

mastershakeman

Yea it needed to be tighter without the uprising thing at all. Everything with Joi was great, so was Batista, and the visuals of the fight with Ford in the casino were wonderful

If you like Villeneuve you should watch Enemy with gyllenhaal, who had a hell of a 5 year run with that in the middle and capped it off with nightcrawler (not Villeneuve but I really liked it)
Other great recent sci-fi movies: moon, edge of tomorrow, coherence (especially coherence, it's fantastic and had no publicity )

You should read pale fire. I don't think it's as good as lolita (the best book ever written) but man it's still really loving good. I read it by skipping the poem first thrn going back to it, and should do it the right way at some point.

I need to read Ada still :I

I got really angry while watching br2049 in how it was a flop for actually trying to take risks and looking phenomenal with incredible lighting. I'd rather watch something that tried and missed a bit than one of those ultra safe movies that are completely forgettable (Kings speech is my go-to example here of everything I hate )

Thank goodness deakins got his Oscar for it at least

*Pounds table chanting Dune* I'm so hyped. I've enjoyed a lot of movies recently but not has anything truly blow me away like fury road but I believe in Villeneuve!!
Good movies to see that aren't sci-fi and just fun action: mission impossible 4-6 (4 is best but 6 is real good) f&f 5-8 (5 is best) , Purge 2-4 (2 is best) , John wicks, raids, dredd

I can't recommend coherence and enemy enough, those are the two that really no one saw

Due to the Star Wars talk, and due to my love of my home brewed psychoanalysis of Star Wars, I will repost my points expressed in a previous thread many years ago:

Incidentally, Star Wars - long flight down a tight trench. Tiny exhaust port leading into a big giant egg. X chromosomes/Y chromosomes each vying to impregnate the big giant egg. Inexperienced virgin farm boy is having difficulty finishing, until his buddy tells him just to relax and go for it; his buddy even plays wingman to get rid of cockblocking dad. Two white photons with tails go streaking down the "exhaust port." Intense look of relief and relaxation on formerly inexperienced farm boy's face. Egg blows up, everyone happy.

Dredd loving owned (just like the movie it was based on, The Raid). So did Fury Road. I want to see Blade Runner but of course it’s not on Netflix. Dune is the best science fiction novel ever written and Villeneuve will do a good job. Sicario was awesome but Sicario 2 is complete trash with no redeeming qualities whatsoever (not Villeneuve). Welp those are my opinions thanks for listening
