I love how much of a tenet of faith it is amongst Brexiters that Ireland is somehow desperate to return to being colonially oppressed. I mean, it's not the only complete repudiation of reality they indulge in, but it's probably the funniest

Isn't a hard border Brexit that the DUP wants a violation of the Good Friday accords? How are the Tories going to square that circle?

The DUP does not want a hard border either with the Republic or with the rest of the UK, although outwardly if they had to make a choice they would prefer a hard border with the Republic I'm sure.

The GFA in no way has anything to do with the EU or presence/non presence of a hard border in Ireland beyond extremely vague commitments for the UK-Irish consultancy body to Do Its Best For Everyone Economically, presumably because EU membership and the CTA were considered to be completely settled issues that made sense as they were.

the confidence and supply agreement itself is a violation, debatably, which they squared by just not ever going to stormont again. straightforward from there

I'm not going to pretend like the peace process hasn't been dead for probably the best part of ten years but I struggle to see how the confidence and supply agreement is a violation of the GFA.

the british government is obligated to be even-handed when dealing with the representative parties of the two communities, but in this instance it relies on one to maintain power, which you could credibly argue renders them incapable of doing this (since the orangemen could just bring down the government out of spite if it ruled against them)

It is even handed in dealing with those parties. SF does not attend parliament and loathes the conservatives. If the DUP acted that way they would also be not consulted on anything.

It's SF's legitimate and understandable choice to hold an accelerationist position towards their own constituents in Westminster and it's people's equally totally valid choice to vote SF as a protest against continued British rule.

The current situation has existed since the adoption of the GFA. Labour at times used DUP votes to pass things, see the ID card vote, the Tories are in a similar position now albeit with slightly higher stakes. Even then I feel like a handful of reprobates like Hoey, Fields, and maybe a couple of the Lib Dems would help squeak through a Brexit Budget if the DUP dropped out and the Tories hadn't picked a new leader yet.

Mildly entertaining, I saw a discussion on twitter about what happens if the government can't get its budget passed. No-one is quite sure if income tax applies till repealed, or if the budget is required to authorise it's collection.
