Yo I posted a girl with four colors on just the single sprue for her face and she’s got printed on eyebrows. Also that completed photo isn’t painted.

But yes, you’re right. Space Marines are just too complex and majestic for only four colors.

And the completed model is made up of a bunch of flat surfaces with no actual detail on it. I'm looking at a space marine sprue here and I'd want at least 7 different colors just for an arm that's probably not much larger than the eye on that.

3 colors is the bare minimum, “I’m completely half-assing this army,” standard for tournament play. 4 colors is one entire extra color over that so I have no idea what anyone would complain about.

Holy poo poo, these eel-knights are DOPE! I'm not an AoS player, but if I were I would be hard-pressed to choose between the Idoneth and Nightvault forces. They both have absolutely killer aesthetics.

Random game question: I really like Battlefleet: Gothic, but it is long OOP and I think it will probably take GW's Specialist Games department a decent amount of time to circle back to it. What other spaceship fleet battle games do people like and why? I've been tempted by Dropfleet Commander, but since Hawk went tits-up I am leery of buying in. Sell me on a spaceships game, Goons!

Pike and Shotte is probably my favorite rank and flank game, if you’re willing to be the booster in your area for it. Rules are based off of Warmaster because it’s written by Rick Priestly.

If you just want a fantasy game with cavalry, Age of Sigmar is probably the most widespread.

Cool, they're multiple colors of plastic that still has way the hell less detail than even old GW sculpts and looks like crap.

To be real here. That’s real cool and all and I’ll probably look at your painted dudes and think that’s real nice. But holy poo poo I’m never gonna put in that effort.

btw I bought the kill team box set because what a value!! a billion bucks of terrain and little men for only $100!! And I totally was happy to see that GW color coded all the little cult boys and robolads, so I could easily mess with them without having to immediately paint all of them.

I just wish they’d go a bit further.

haha no when i paint that part i'll use closer to 20 different paints, not 7. I don't know how you can look at a GW sprue vs that anime waifu and think they're in any way comparable, the anime poo poo has absolutely no detail in it at all.

There's always Kings of War for fantasy battles of all types. Good clean ruleset, balance allegedly good aside from op dwarves, though you may find the mechanics lacking in charm and character.

Or be one of those crazy people trying to make 9th edition Warhammer Fantasy a thing.

I adore black powder but for horsies specifically P&S is better because the rock/paper/scissors interplay of pike blocks, sword/axe/etc infantry and cavalry is so great.

Infantry/artillery definitely reigns supreme in BP.

Its not really a fleet battle game but I thought xwing was a lot of fun (though I haven't played 2nd edition yet). I really liked its movement mechanics, where you have to anticipate how your opponent will move. It also felt pretty balanced, but I admittedly never played in tournaments.

The downsides were the way they do releases, the power creep, and the way games can feel the same once you've figured out how to fly a particular squadron

This was the part I liked best about BFG - you weren't making your plans on where your enemy was now, but rather where they were going to be in the next turn or two. Given the ponderous nature of cruisers and (especially) battleships, you could make some guesses, but the really clever use of a well-timed "Burn Retros" or "Come to New Heading" could totally bone you. But then again, executing those orders reduced your firing, so sometimes it didn't bite you too badly. The game just felt like it really presented you with a lot if difficult tactical choices, which I always love. I briefly looked into naval historicals, but good criminy does that appear to be the exclusive preserve of the worst kind of rivet counter.

I got into X-Wing HARD when 40k was in the middle of its "let's make all these formations STACK" period of 7th Ed., and I can say that it is a lot more balanced, at the casual level, but once you get into the tournament scene, it's pretty much just as bad as the 40k tournament scene. You'd occasionally see a gimmick list here or there, but it was largely just very slight variations of the same 3-4 lists, usually with 1 of them being some super bullshit broken list (built around soon to be nerfed new releases) and the rest were the same tired lists you'd been playing against for the past several releases. I found that it just got stale pretty quickly. I stayed through most of the 1st Ed. before bailing to 30k. I've heard the 2nd Ed. is a ton of fun, but haven't bothered to try it yet. I hope it's good; I've been a massive Star Wars nut since I was a little kid, and I really want a reason to play again!

My roommate and I got into X-Wing pretty deep, getting at least one of every ship. I would say that X-Wing is a game that gets worse the more stuff you have for it. List building can become pretty tedious as you go through a hundred different upgrade and pilot cards to find the best combo. Then gameplay can crawl to a halt as you need to ask what every ship is capable of doing. I think next time we play it we'll put some restriction on how much you can use.

That being said, a small game of X-Wing is brilliant. I've never been frustrated by the hidden maneuvers, only disappointed in my own tactical choice. The dice rolling is pretty quick (unless you've got way too many cards in play), and leads to some pretty cinematic moments.

Good game, I would highly recommend getting a handful of ships and shoot lasers at your friends. I haven't played 2nd, and probably never will.
