GM still has too many brands. Buick could be a China only brand but that would upset it's brand equity in China so it won't happen. GMC's existence is questionable since it's the 97% same poo poo as Chevy trucks, so they could pull a Dodge/RAM easily and make GMC Trukkkkks.

The brands made neat stuff in the 50s, 60s and 70s (and sorta the 80s, see T-Type/GN) but nobody has given a poo poo in a meaningful financial fashion in a long time about Pontiac or Oldsmobile.

Let it die. Ford did the right thing by putting Mercury out to pasture. It was sad but it was just another pointless rebadging effort.

Seems like a good way to slam the brakes and slam the accelerator forward at the same time.

Well remember Olds had a lotta cool stuff...

1) First OHV V8 known as the Rocket.
2) J2 option in '57 which was the triple carb.
3) Instead of '2' on the trans indicator they would put a 'S' for Superdrive.
4) Turbo poo poo with the F85 Jetfire back in '62.

Had a '72 Delta 88 as a first car. The lead sled. Sadly it only had the Rocket 350 with a 2bbl.

I wonder if Mercury (no the other Mercury) used that for their Mustang's throttle? It would be pretty appropriate.

My uncle has what I consider the last real Oldsmobile. 1980 Delta 98. It's a black 2 door about 20 feet long with a tan leather interior. It's the last year for the old's rocket 350 and it has a 4bbl. I'm going to be working on it this fall so I'll get pictures. It's mega cool with white wall tires and spoked hubcaps.

E: I forgot about the Aurora, that was a cool Olds. Overhead cam FWD V8. That's probably the last real one. They used to be cool experimental stuff like the Jetfire turbo.

Heh, that's awesome. My great aunt (who amazingly is still alive at around 86 years old) had a (I'm thinking probably a 72 or so) 98 with a 455. Green.

Her sister had a 72 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 400. Man those doors were big. As a kid I thought the shifter was cool.

Good times.

Entirety of my Oldsmobile experience was in the back of a custom cruiser, back in the days of "pshaw kids don't need no stupid seat belts" so me and my sisters bounced around in the huge cavern that was the rear end and somehow didn't die.

It survived all the way to the late 90's and I even got to (had to) drive it a few times. Dad was a career mechanic so he took pretty good care of it but even then it was a sluggish spongy boat.

Well the Aurora was cool, but was saddled by the Northstar. Although I think GM gave it the "baby" Northstar...which somehow is an awesome engine yet a pile of poo poo.

A case could be made that the 2001 4 cyl Alero was the last true Oldsmobile. It was assembled in Lansing and used the 2.4 L Twin Cam which was derived from the old Oldsmobile engineered Quad Four.

Those kinda sucked though.

And hence the demise of my Delta 88. It was on its last legs but holy hell did they want the gasser to do swaps on the diesel and I took them up on the offer.

Funny thing was many years later at some random junkyard I ran into it again. Sort of a Christine moment...one of those I should have bought a lottery ticket.

Rust eventually killed ours. It got used to launch boats in salt water and the back end turned into flakes as if Thanos had snapped.

At some point around 1990 dad got it painted, metallic green with chrome smoothie rims. It looked fantastic (for a station wagon).

Oh yea you're right but those things were enormous pieces of poo poo. The engine is ok but I remember driving those that were a couple years old when I did emissions and the interiors were falling apart and Windows and buttons wouldn't work. The saddest Oldsmobile.

Honestly pretty interesting seeing the difference in a loaded Vibe/Matrix vs GF's bare bones model Matrix.

She has tiny coin holders where the mirror switch would be, also where the hatch release switch would be. Pop-open cubby where the 2 switches in front of the shifter would be. She also has the typical half broken Toyota VFD clock where the defrost switch would be (switch is moved over by the AC + recirc buttons).

Interior is identical aside from that.

The shifter is really loving notchy (but the position didn't take any getting used to), clutch is touchy as hell, but it's a decent driving car for what it is. Turns out it's about $100 to add cruise to it (hers is the first year of DBW, so it's just a kit with the switch and a few wires), which I'll probably do for Christmas (our road trips are mostly in her car, with me driving..).

Oddly, her absolutely zero options outside of floor mats, and her car has automatic headlights. No, I don't mean the DRLs. There's a light sensor on the dash, and all of the lights do kick on if you do a stupid and start driving without turning them on at night. It takes a couple of minutes though, and isn't an advertised "feature". There's absolutely no way to turn off the lights once they've been turned on except for shutting off the car, which is annoying as hell (regardless of whether you use the switch or let the auto lights kick in).

I think my favourite thing about the early run of the 1st gen matrix/vibe is that the digital odo stops at 299,999.

Looks dumb, although to be fair to the guy these apparently have a real frame so it's probably not as floppy as I first assumed.

I own a Ranger and a CJ-7 so I don't hate trucks, although I could take plenty of pictures of stupid mall crawlers here in town. I think Albuquerque has as many Jeeps per capita as anywhere else I've lived.

Every automatic feature (but especially lights) should have a manual override to turn it off. Someday, that light sensor or some other part of the electrical system may fail in such a way that the only way to make the lights go off is a physical switch. And you never know when you might have the President in your car and it's night and you are being chased by Russian mobsters down some dark country highway and you try to pull off the road and park in a barn to hide but they see your non-defeatable headlights shining through the rickety wooden slats and capture the President and force America to surrender all because you didn't have a manual light switch.

Also, running your headlights does cause the alternator to work harder, reducing fuel economy and performance by an amount that's probably too small to measure. And running headlights all the time makes them burn out faster.

Intrigue (aka Grand Prix with a much worse interior), Alero (aka Grand Am). The Aurora was a pretty nice car, but suffered from the same issues that plagued the Northstar engine family.

Mostly because, at least if I'm working and borrowing her car, I'll often have to park for a bit here and there on a slower day. It'd be nice to be able to turn off the lights without shutting the car off (and thus losing a/c, heat, and music). Having them on draws attention to the random courier parked under a tree.

It was a Cadillac Northstar 4.6 that got smaller bores, in a nutshell. Same stroke. different intake, different engine management system. The LX5 V6 is also (very) loosely based on the Northstar, and was used in V6 Auroras (Wikipedia also claims it was found in 99-02 Intrigues, but I know my mom's 99 had a 3800 in it).

Though the Northstar was originally an Oldsmobile project; they started development in 1984. It was a pretty drat high tech engine for its day; I'd like to think it's the first successful commercial application of cylinder deactivation (I don't count Cadillac's early 80s V8-6-4 attempt successful), though in the Northstar's case, it turned into a 4 cylinder if it overheated (it was meant to kick in if coolant was lost, but I can attest to it kicking in after beating on one on a hot summer day in the desert - the theory being that the non-firing cylinders could be used as air cooling).

And I've had 15k before a DRL light burnt out so my anecdote supersedes yours. Take a look at how many GM cars are running along with just one DRL (more common is a GM car running with just one corner light, those fuckers must die every month).
