So which chapter is going to be the part where Ruby becomes a boss fight?

It's going to happen eventually, the signs are obvious. I'm just not sure when they're going to pull it and have Chlotz inevitably take over as the slightly more insecure but far more pleasant by comparison mission control.

I suppose it says a bit about this game that Ruby, of all people, seems to be the most fleshed out and whole character, instead of a bucket of lovely anime tropes.

She's technically a bag of tropes herself, but I guess there is no character that doesn't have those in them to some extent.

The fact I do hate her so much is probably because she's more fleshed out than the others.

Speaking of character fleshing out and being whole, I can't wait until the end of the LP rolls around where I can talk freely about all of the characters. I've got some words to say about everyone, especially when it relates to what the fan base for this game apparently thinks an interesting/rounded/flat character is and is not.

That reminds me, I should add a character section to the Extras post. The cast is starting to build up now, so people need a way to keep track of them. I'll get to work on that in a little bit. Character section has been added.

Here's some more cut content. Unfortunately, Chlotz' side events seem to be the ones I usually have to cut in the interest of space, which is a shame because some of them are pretty funny to me. They just don't usually have much in the way of narrative value.

[img]sister[/img] (Chlotz asks how things are going with his sister.)

Whatever are you talking about?

Oh, don't act like I don't know what's going on between you two. I'm asking if you two are forging a bond to make stronger Star Children.

So that's what you're getting at. I thought you were about to tell me the best way to 'woo' her.

Of course not. Why would you need advice when it came to Chloe?

...

Don't tell me something's going on between you two...

Well, actually...

No. Shut up. I'd rather not know...

If you want a stronger bond with her, you first gotta kick the fans away.

Believe it or not, she's pretty popular among the Disciples. Hence it's gonna be a challenge just to find some time with her.

Okay, you're starting to weird me out a little. This is not how I expected this conversation to go.

Anyways, I recommend you bond with her, like now.

Stop doing that. It's no fun when you do that.

I know...

...You make a dangerous wager, good sir.

That happened. I didn't think Chlotz would be that...helpful, when it came to his sister. Especially considering how we just saw him act in Chloe's events. I'm not messing with dialogue this time. Chlotz is just being super weird in sub-events.

Let's go bother him again and see if his tune changes.

-2nd-Year Classroom-

She took the magazine out of my desk without asking me!

Took? You sure it wasn't confiscation?

There was no reason to confiscate it! She just likes to read my magazines!

For as long as I can remember she's been like this. She thinks her stuff is hers, and that my stuff is ours.

That does sound like a sister thing to do, but it doesn't sound like a Chloe thing to do.

The Disciples think she's so nice, but they don't know the real her.

So she's mean to you? I mean, I've seen how she gets during class sometimes, but I also don't get the impression that she's like that with you.

Well... she's usually nice to me unless I do something stupid...

Hm? I guess she's nice to me most of the time...

But she takes my stuff, man! You know how I feel, right?

...

What?

I want you to take a moment to really think hard on what you just said to me. Then I want you to remember the conversation we had in the graveyard.

*Wake leaves*

What?...

Ooohhhhh....

Oh...

Good job Chlotz. Go to your friend whose sister got torn in half protecting him from monsters and be like "Sisters! Am I right!? Always doing sister things! Such a paaaiiiinnnn."

Trying to string men into working for her free of charge by using her charms and giving them a little bit of attention is not a trope afaik, and while pretty mean is much more interesting a habit than any of the protagonists can come up with.

That's something of a Femme Fatale actually. Not to mention her characteristic for throwing caution to the wind in the pursuit of science. She also has some other follies and characteristics that we haven't been informed of yet. Ruby is definitely heavy on tropes. I didn't say that was a bad thing though. Tropes are tropes because they are common elements in story telling and even life itself. These characters being made up of them is not a negative, but how the tropes are being used (or not used) definitely can be. All a matter of opinion though, I suppose.

Thanks. This has been a fun new project for me, but I can only justify working on it if people like you are around to enjoy reading it. With that concern in mind, I probably should have chosen a more popular/well-known game in retrospect. This one doesn't attract a lot of attention.

~Update 8: No one ever looked so Fine~

Here we go. New chapter, new Labyrinth to explore, new Star Children to vote on, new team member, and a bunch of new characters.

Torri will finally be joining us in this chapter, after having been introduced near the start of the previous chapter and then hanging out with the group for the last part of it.

With Torri's spot as 'team member, but not quite yet' now vacant, our final party member will be taking up that mantle for this chapter. Time to get an advanced look at the Seventh Star.

-School Grounds-

Looks like another crowd.

Do you think it's Enzea again?

Well, they're blonde, but unless Enzea grew a pair of breasts recently then I don't think that's him.

[Female Disciple]: Ha!

I'm sorry I cannot live up to your wishes. Please forgive me for my circumstances.

Dude... Isn't that the best fighter in the girls' Fencing Club? Who's that epic beauty who just beat her?

Feene... Oh! I've heard a lot about her! People are saying she's really impressive.

That's correct. Excuse me, but... are you Wake?

In the flesh. Who wants to know?

Thank goodness, I can finally greet the God's Gift.

Normally, I command the defensive line along with Alec.

Triche is pretty cool. He's a lot more chill than Alec is, and it's good to know that Alec isn't handling that entire job by himself.

Triche is an S-Rank Disciple by the way. That makes it kind of weird that Wake hasn't met him up until now. The S-Rank dorm is stated to be separate from the Elite dorms (Chlotz doesn't stay in the same dorm as Wake). We aren't told about any other Male S-Ranks currently staying in Fort City, which means the S-Ranked Men's Dorm consists of Wake, Alec, and Triche at the moment.

Maybe it's a shift thing. Like, Triche pulls night shift a lot so he's always out when Wake is at the dorm. That kind of thing.

Nice to meet you! I'm Chlotz!

Good to meet you. I'm glad to know that there's another S Rank to talk to besides Mr. Angrypants.

I have a long way to go before I can be compared to Alec, though.

Hey, Feene's coming towards us.

Oh, man, she's even better up close! How is that body so fine!?

Chlotz, you just witnessed her dominate the star of the fencing club like it was nothing. Is that really the kind of girl you want overhearing your perving?

Haha... Looks like Chlotz is a very straightforward person.

Yeah, that sure is one way to phrase it.

Sure am. Nice to meet you.

[Female Disciple A]: Eeeeeee! Lady Feene is speaking to God's Gift!

As I thought! My name is Feene. I just returned from the battle lines on the continent recently.

Feene (Fee-nay) is the other character that got a name change, along with Chlotz. What is her name in the Japanese version? Fine. Not 'fine' as in I'm saying everything is okay, her name is 'Fine' (Fee-nay). So that's goofy, but what is the major problem with that? Well, her last name is 'Glass'. So her Japanese name ends up as 'Fine Glass'. Yeah, I am going to side with the localization team this time. This change was necessary.

Feene at least seems to be an actual word. It's a definite plural of 'Fe', which in Bokmål Norwegian is 'Fairy', from the French word 'fée' meaning the same. Given her blonde hair and blue eyes, the stereotypical Norwegian or Scandinavian girl is probably what they were going for. Or they just thought 'Feene' was a good pronunciation substitute for 'Fine'. Anyone who is more knowledgeable in Japanese than I am is welcome to explain whether or not 'Fine' is nonsense or not.

Also, according to UrbanDictionary, feene is slang for a person who is highly addicted to a substance and desperate to get high. Lovely.

Yeah, I heard. I'm glad you're getting some time to rest.

I see... Um... I...

....

Uhh... You doing okay? Something wrong?

I cannot thank you enough for sterilizing the Dusk Circle in my hometown!

FINALLY. Holy poo poo, it's about time someone expressed some genuine gratitude to Wake. At least someone in this drat Academy appreciates him risking his life daily to save their sorry asses.

I want to point this choice out. No matter what you choose to answer with, Wake will always add "My friends helped me." Official Wake will not permit you to be a glory hog and act like he did all the work.

No problem. I had some help from a few friends, and by that I mean the Star Children blazed a trail of destruction through the entire place.

Friends... Yes, indeed. We are invincible as long as we have our friends.

If there is anything I can do starting now, please feel free to say it. I wish to be your strength!

Pretty intense, aren't you? Still, it's nice to finally get a little respect. I appreciate the offer.

Well then, please excuse me.

I've made up my mind. I'm going to call her "Miss Beautiful" from now on!

She was grateful and respectful towards me, which is more than I can say about 95% of the people in this stupid place. You will call the lady whatever she wishes to be called.

Calm down, man. I'm just kidding around. Geez.

That's our first look at Feene, who is the final party member. Like Torri, however, Feene will be sitting out for a chapter for contrived reasons. Can't go introducing two heroines in the same chapter and sharing the spotlight.

-Downtown-

I've been thinking about that a little. I don't get a lot of time, but maybe if I join the fencing club then I can make it work as sort of a training thing.

It's not like the Dusk Circles are doing much for my swordsmanship, and Renda is no good for my practical training due to the intensity limitations.

The Fencing Club, huh? I think Triche is their leader.

Even better. He might not think he's on Alec's level, but he's still an S-Rank. He's got to be a good sparring partner.

[Child]: Aaaaah!

What the hell was that?

[Civilian]: A-A monster! A monster's appeared!

Wake, over there!

[Child]: Noooo! Mommy, help me!

[Child's Mother]: Someone, help! Please, save my child!

poo poo, where did that thing come from!? How did it make it all the way Downtown!?

Kshaaaaa!

(We're not going to make it!)

Check out the video: Alec saves the day (English)

Now Alec gets a turn to look like a badass. Notice that he's just using a normal sword, same as Wake did in the forest.

Still does the job though. I can only assume that it's much much harder for a non-Branded human to do. Not impossible, mind you. We were told that humans were able to deal with monsters back when they were smaller in number, and that was before this whole Brand/Disciple business.

Alec gives the 'I'm so dashing' hair flip.

[Child]: Waaaaah! I was so scared!

You're safe now. Are you hurt at all?

[Child]: No... I'm okay.

[Child's Mother]: Thank you so much for saving my child!

It was a good thing we happened to be patrolling the city, isn't it, Alec?

Well look at that, Fort City already has security patrols for this kind of rare occurrence, because of course it loving does. It's almost like the city defenses are being managed by two S-Rank Elite Disciples that have the backing of a global defense corporation. You know, people who know what they're doing.

I'm talking to you, Sasami. You smug prick. Peacekeeping Patrol, honestly now.

Spoiler Alert for Narika's Route: The game is going to take this one monster attack and run with it in order to try and make Sasami's plan seem not stupid. Screw you, game. I refuse to believe that Fort City has such crappy security, and haven't plugged all the holes, in 20 years.

I'm sorry... I saw that kid in danger, and I couldn't restrain myself...

Besides, you're not an Elite. Don't be so reckless.

Okay...

Hey, Alec!

God's Gift.

Ah, Chlotz.

Oh... Luce. You're here, too.

So this is the mysterious Luce we've heard so much vague gossip about. This is the Standard Disciple that Chlotz is apparently crushing on, despite his non-stop drooling over Ruby/Feene/Narika/S-Rank girls in general. At least he seems to have an actual shot with this one, unlike Ruby.

Ah, so this is Luce.

N-No, it's nothing! Don't worry about it.

Spoke too soon. Seems Alec is standing in the way somehow.

Alec has told me about you, Wake. To think you've fought in the Dusk Circles... You Elites truly are amazing.

Alec, can I borrow you for a moment?

Yes?

Look at this... The monster was wearing it.

What about it?

Take a closer look. Can't you tell what it is?

That's probably not good.

It's most likely from a member of the Standard class.

Hold on, are you saying that monster ate a Disciple?

That's impossible. Monsters are Dusk Energy incarnate.

Then, what happened?

Also, I found this near the monster. It's a student ID.

This...!?

Luce? You look deathly pale... Are you okay?

This ID... It belongs to my classmate.

...You're joking, right?

Oh, god drat it...

Impossible... Are you saying a Disciple turned into a monster?

That's probably also not a good thing. We get a quick transition here to see the student body being briefed on this.

-Gymnasium-

Our investigation has concluded that it was an Academy Disciple who had gone missing. How a Disciple was turned into such a creature is currently being researched...

*sob*

.....

-Hallway-

Um, hey, Alec...

...What is it?

Listen, about what went down yesterday...

[Standard Disciple B]: But he was a monster. All you can do with them is kill them...

[Standard Disciple A]: I don't care, I could never kill someone I knew.

[Standard Disciple B]: Well, I mean, it's still murder. Don't get me wrong. The Nemesis Hunters just have a different way of thinking about this stuff, is all.

Once again, random students are antagonizing the special forces group in their school that would be their only means of survival should that Dusk Circle outside activate. The Star Wall is only any good against stragglers, I don't think AngelMarker or anyone else is under any delusions that it would hold against the oldest and most powerful Dusk Circle on the planet. Not to mention this city is on an island. Your only hope of living in the event of a worst case scenario is that God's Gift/7 S-Ranked Girls/a dozen or so Star Children/Alec/Triche can manage to hold the line long enough for an evacuation to be carried out by air or sea.

The people here are so freaking stupid.

What's with those guys? They obviously know we can hear them. Hey, you! You better stop or...

Don't.

But...

[Standard Disciple B]: Yeah, you're right.

.....

I find myself wondering more and more each day if saving anyone in this school is really worth it.

Alec.... You doing okay?

Yeah... I'm fine.

Yeah, you say that. In any case, you couldn't have known at the time. Don't let it get to you.

*Alec leaves*

Wow, he's... He's really indifferent about all this, isn't he?

....

-School Grounds-

Alright, next two!

[Male Disciple A]: This is gonna be a match to remember!

....

....

Come on, you two. En garde! Begin!

Come at me, God's Gift...

Have it your way.

Haaa!

*A clash happens and Wake gets struck down, although not exactly fairly*

If I had the power of a God's Gift, I'd be better than that.

Enough! I mean, seriously! Stop! Alec, that was against the rules. I told you specifically: no striking!

...I'm sorry.

See me in the faculty office when this is over. Understood?

Yes...

It's rare to see Alec break the rules...

'Better' in this case meaning 'massive cheater'. Go drop dead with that garbage LightBlueHair. How do we not even have names for you two? Seriously, these guys have been around for a while now, they have full unique character sprite sheets with multiple expressions that I had to paste together, and I don't think we ever learn what their names are over the course of this entire game.

Wake, you alright?

As alright as I can be considering he nailed me full force with a training sword.

What's with that guy? Was he taking it out on you?

Kind of feels that way, doesn't it?

-Hallway-

Wake, sir. How is your injury?

You saw that, huh? Still hurts a bit, although the ego injury is worse.

I was watching you fence from the campus.

Kind of wish you hadn't, to be honest. I'll pay him back, don't worry. I think it's about time Alec was brought down from his perch.

As I've mentioned before, I wish to repay you for what you've done for me.

You know what? I'd like that, actually. I've been looking for someone who was good enough to spar with, and since Alec is being a jerk at the moment, training with you would be a big help. Thanks.

There's no need to thank me. It's my turn now to be of use to you. I usually remain at school until it's late. Please feel free to call on me at any time.

So Wake has a trainer now, and he's gonna Rocky the poo poo out of Alec. Something crawled further up Alec's rear end than usual, so the friendly approach isn't going to cut it anymore. Wake's going to have to kick that guy's rear end to put him in his place.

-School Rooftop-

....

Luce.

Oh, Chlotz.

Considering what happened just yesterday, I thought you might be here.

Mm...

...Are you okay? I mean, I know it must've been a shock for you... since you knew that person.

Thanks, but I'm all right. That reminds me, we first met on this rooftop, too.

That's why my sister sent me to you. She thought you might be cheered up if her stupid brother had a chat with you.

Yeah! You did cheer me up.

Oh... But I wasn't implying that you're stupid! You're amazing, Chlotz. I mean, you're an Elite.

It would be nice if you could become an Elite, too.

Huh?

Oh... Never mind.

I'm more worried about Alec. People have been saying things about him...

I'm sure he'll be fine. I mean, he's always been Mr. Indifferent, after all.

He's a lot more sensitive than he looks. A lot of people don't see that.

I guess so...

Way to go Chlotz. You acted like a decent human being for once. Now if only you could keep that up all the time.

With all of that out of the way, we're finally set free into Chapter 3. A bunch of new stuff is on the table, got some new quests and items and all that jazz. The stuff for the Star Children isn't particularly noteworthy. Some minor attack upgrades, but coming with downsides like reduced speed.

If you spend any decent amount of time exploring dungeons, then you should have almost everything you need to kit out your teams with the best stuff.

That being said, Accessories are a different story. There are a couple of new ones here that could be pretty useful.

Star God Necklace: Everyone has this equipped by default, including newly born Star Children. It's actually pretty good, and it might be a while before you start swapping them out. It increases SPD/TEC/LUC by a little bit.
Might Bangle: ATK +50
Knight's Belt: DEF +50
Magic Earring: MAT +50
Charm: MDF +50
Rapid Ring: SPD +50
Hunting Gloves: TEC +50
Lucky Charm: LUC +50
Cool Band: Panic Down Resistance+
Curseproof Scarf: Seal Down Resistance+
Active Glove: Paralysis Down Resistance+

A few things to note here. There is a Lab Quest available called 'Witch Project A' that rewards you with Reflector when completed. All you need is a piece of armor called 'Hard Leather', which you have likely obtained during your trip through the dungeon. I believe you pick it up from the Purple Trap Chests, but I'm not sure if the quest has to be active, since Hard Leather is a regular armor piece.

If you did miss it, then collect the quest now and just look through the Labyrinths for the yellow exclamation marks and find the location of the quest. Then just search that dungeon for the trap chests.

This is worth it, as Reflector is an armor upgrade for the heroines. You have to get heroine upgrades through lab quests, so this is your only chance to give them a bump. It's a decent increase with no drawbacks, so you may as well take advantage.

Another quest that you should pick up and turn in is the one for killing Beelzebub. You can safely ignore these quests until after the Dusk Circle boss is dead. They stay on the board even after you kill them and can be turned in after the fact, so accepting it before you beat them just eats up one of your quest slots.

Turning this one in is important, because it gives you Upgrade Parts S, which allows you to upgrade the heroines weapons. The upgraded Dusk Breakers are already in your inventory when you turn in the quest, no need to buy them.

The S version of the Dusk Breakers gives a +100 to ATK, MAT, and most importantly, SPD. It also boosts Elemental effectiveness. No reason why you shouldn't equip them all.

I give a few Star Children their independence to boost the City Level a little bit, although I don't open any new features or anything special. I keep the Magician, though. I need him at a certain level for a new class, and he's not quite there yet.

I've filled in the spaces with some random SC's for now, since you need to have a full team of three in order to use the slot. I may change the Lancer and Blacksmith out depending on how the thread votes.

Boosting the City Level did snag a few new items in the shop though.

Detox Stone/Maiden's Salp/Paraneedle/Chatter Herb: Standard status restore items to heal Poison/Panic/Paralysis/Seal, in that order.
Savage Drum: Increases ATK by +500 for 5 turns. This is pretty good, if you ever find yourself wanting to use buffs. I usually don't, personally.
Toning Tonic: Increases DEF by +500 for 5 turns.

Before we move on and wrap up the intro to Chapter 3, there is a side event with Mark that I think is worth fitting in here. I can't be sure if I'll have room for it during the Torri bonding update, so I want to get it in now.

-Laboratory-

Hello there. Have you heard?

Please stop doing that, Mark. I never have any idea what you are talking about. Just go "Hey, want to hear something cool?"

Mmm, no. I think I like my way better.

Fine, just tell me what it is.

The production rate of Matryoshkas has been increasing lately.

As it turns out, that light has been becoming more intense.

Clearly, the Star God is trying to provide us with every possible advantage. On top of that, you have a 100% Star Conception Rate with S Ranked females. I must admit, the conditions are looking really good for our next experiment.

Want to run that by me again? Experiment?

Oh, don't worry about it. It's our problem.

You focus on making healthy Star Children.

I've got my eye on you guys...

That's where the Matryoshkas come from. They are apparently like fruit or veggies or something. Adorable. Speaking of Matryoshkas, I've picked up a bunch of new ones during my little jaunts through the dungeons. I'll go over them once the new Team A(wful) has been voted in.

Fair enough. So...

Yeah, kind of looks that way. He was being mobbed by school girls earlier.

Well, I'm sure that the girls there would just throw themselves at him.

You don't seem super thrilled about that. I'm going to regret asking, but what is the deal with those two, anyway? I know he hired her.

That's true. She originally worked for a government research facility.

And then Enzea pulled her out of there. Obviously her reputation precedes her and he wouldn't take "no" for an answer. Chief Ruby and I both started here five years ago. She's had that crush on Enzea for as long as I can remember.

He even intimidates me a little, even though I'm old enough to know better.

Now there's a surprise. Ruby likes a man that takes charge? Could have fooled me by the way she likes to bark orders.

Oh, I'm sorry. I'm wasting your time with all this babble.

I can at least agree with you there, Mark. Let's move the story forward. We need Torri officially on Team God's Gift before this update can end. We'll deal with everyone else's random babbling later.

-Dojo-

Hey Triche.

Ah, Wake. What brings you here?

I'm looking to join the Fencing Club. I need more practical training. Redux isn't cutting it.

By the way, Triche is Captain of the Fencing Team. I would imagine he is on Feene's level, if not above her, but we don't get a good indication of just how combat adept he is. "I have a long way to go" when it comes to Alec could mean any number of things after all, not just fighting skill.

*Anyway, Fencing stuff happens. Wake is less than impressed*

Well done, Wake.

Our club's training is said to be as intense as that of the Aquatics Team. But you managed to keep up with our training from your first day.

We haven't had someone as tough as you since Alec joined.

Alec's in this club, too?

I recommended it to him, since we're both S Ranked.

But he doesn't appear to enjoy having to participate in group activities.

Yeah, that should surprise no one. Not really a team sort of guy.

Well, I'm going to get some dinner with a few classmates. Would you like to join us?

There's a great noodle place that I really like. They have the best soba. They knead 72 types of herbs into their dough, so it's very healthy.

I appreciate the invite, but I have something else I need to do. The fencing practice didn't give me what I was looking for today. Sorry about that. Maybe next time?

Man, I was starting to forget what it feels like to have pleasant characters around. I mean, the heroines are sweet (Serina excluded), but we've been running into a bunch of dickish side characters lately.

-Hallway-

I wonder if Feene is still around...

-3rd-Year Classroom-

She's not in her classroom...

-Garden-

Ah, there she is.

Turn towards the camera, dammit! :argh:

Listen, I have a special favour to ask.

Of course. Ask away.

-Dojo-

Shouldn't you take a rest? You appear to be quite exhausted.

I need to get stronger. I need to be able to beat him. It's the only way to get through.

...Very well.

I am indebted to you for saving my hometown. The skills that I have mastered over the years... I will teach them to you as quickly as I can.

I like it rough! Let's go!

Also, ignore the way I phrased that!

I shall try!

Well then, here goes! Ha!

And so, Feene proceeded to teach Wake everything she knew, which lasted for...a day? Maybe a week, tops? There's no indication, but it definitely hasn't been long.

-Some kind of hill, somewhere. I dunno, they don't give this place a name-

You and me have something to settle.

I'd heard that you had joined the Fencing Club.

But if you think that's going to give you the edge over me, you are sorely mistaken.

Won't know that unless we fight, will we?

I apologize for breaking the rules when we fought in class.

That issue with the monster had been weighing heavily on my mind. Ms. Chloe pointed that out to me, and I couldn't deny it.

I ended up being on bathroom cleaning duty for a week because of that. You can laugh at me for being such a disgrace of an S Rank.

That's why I want you to give up such foolish desires as revenge.

Shut up, Alec. You're one to talk about foolish desires, with all your 'If I was God's Gift' this, and 'I should be the one going into Dusk Circles' that.

You told me I should train myself better. Well, I did. Now I want to know exactly how strong I am.

And you wish to use me for that purpose?

That's right. It's not the only reason though. I also want to put you in your place. So what's it going to be?

That is a foolish offer...

Come, God's Gift. Find out what the difference between our strengths truly is!

*Epic clashes start happening, I guess. The screen is flashing*

Is that as far as you can go, God's Gift?

This is a waste of time. We can both see that you're at your limits. You are stronger than before, but this is the extent of your true strength.

Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

I cannot lose...! I will not let my father down!

Haaaa!

Haaaa!

*And they fought*

*laughing*

Why are you so happy? You did not defeat me.

Oh no, I won all right. The fight itself may have been a draw, but I did beat you.

What are you talking about?

I trained with Feene for a few days, at best. Then I fought Mr. 'I'm the Greatest' to a draw. You beat me by cheating, and then later all you could do in a fair match was break even. Give me another week and I'll be humiliating you. I'm still not even an S Rank for Star God's sake! *laughing*

....

....

You're such an rear end.

See? That's the spirit.

You've completed your objective, at least. You used me... and now you have proven that you are stronger than before.

It wasn't all me. Feene was a major help, and believe it or not, you were too.

I did nothing. All I am... is a murderer.

Huh?

There's nothing more foolish than that...!

Alec, if you hadn't killed that monster then I would have. The difference is that you managed to save a life by doing it. I would have been too late.

If...

There's a choice here that amounts to 'Hard to tell'/'If I had to'/'Probably not', but come on, we all know what Wake is about. LP or Official.

I mean, yeah. It's kind of my whole deal, if you haven't noticed. I'm not saying I would be okay with it, but if they turned then I wouldn't have a choice.

I see... I wasn't expecting that answer. Maybe you're more level-headed than I thought.

Or perhaps I'm more naive than I thought I was...

The only reason this is happening is because of the Dusk Circles. Don't worry, I will seal them all before I lose my Brand. I intend to put a stop to all monsters.

Hell yeah! About drat time that someone was on board with my monster killing ways. Up top!

Let's not. I don't need a symbolic gesture to prove my word.

Why doesn't anyone want to give me five?

*Vis-o-matic beeps*

...Yes, Ma'am.

It's rare to see you with a friend, Alec.

Mmm, perfect.

Wake, I'm not very good at dealing with her. Will you talk to her for me?

If I have to.

I can hear you, Alec. You underestimate the capabilities of the Vis-o-matic!

....

Anyway, I'm sorry to bother you, Wake, but I need you at the lab at once. One of the Circle Seeds has finally activated. Hurry.

You should go. If you anger her, there are sure to be serious consequences later.

Pfft, I doubt it. You wouldn't believe the kind of leverage I have over her.

-Laboratory-

I hope to get along with you all.

Same here. Welcome aboard.

Hm? Chief Ruby, Miss Beautiful isn't here yet.

Sorry everyone, but Feene isn't joining this chapter. I will say that this is a slightly more understandable reason than Torri's 'she needs more training' bullshit. Feene has been holding the line for a while to try and stop her hometown from being overrun, so it makes sense she would want to take a brief break to go back and check on her parents/friends/family.

What!? Miss Beautiful went back!?

She was their leader there, so it seems there are still some things to be done. It'll be a while before she can act as a member of the Dusk Spawner exterminators.

Is that what we're calling our group? I have got to get us a better name than that. Another project for the pile I guess...

Let me tell you about this new Labyrinth. The new Dusk Circle is relatively far from both the mainland and this island. We estimate that the Circle activated as much as three weeks ago.

The density of the Dusk Circles is slowly increasing after all...

Is that also because of the monsters? I don't like the sound of that...

We have been authorized to send a team into the Circle. We leave at 10:00 AM tomorrow. I want each of you prepared to enter this Labyrinth! Are we clear?

....

Listen, I know the two of us have our... issues, but it's part of the briefing I was given. I have to say all of this.

Fine. I'll let it slide from now on. Just as long as everyone is clear that I decide when we are ready to pull the trigger.

Yes, yes. Just let it go already.

There we are, Chapter 3 has been kicked off. Torri is officially in the party, which means we'll take a small diversion to properly introduce her. We will also have to stay on top of the focus heroines events.

In the meantime, we need to prep a new Team A(wful) before any Labyrinth trips start happening. Felicia, Luna, and Seth have all served admirably through two Labyrinths and two Sub-Labyrinths, but it's time for some fresh faces.

The three of them will still be tagging along, though. They have hit their level caps of 23-25, but that cap is enough to keep them effective against Labyrinth enemies for quite some time yet. I'll shift them into Team B and then rearrange the other Star Children to boost the city level a bit.

So, let's get down to it. We have picked up a lot of new classes in the time since the last vote.

Speaking of, the Ether Sniper has become available for some reason. Narika just happened to be able to make one. It probably happened during the Sub-Labyrinth, and I just haven't Classmated with Narika since then. Alternatively, they might just unlock upon reaching Chapter 3. Hard to tell.

Ether Snipers are upgrades over the Gunslinger class. All the same stuff applies to them. They've got the same stat spread but get different/more powerful skills.

Here are all the new classes that have been introduced since the last vote.

See, I'm sort of divided in my opinion on this one. On one hand, these Disciples are training for real battle against monsters and there's no guarantee that the monsters are going to "play fair", so learning to anticipate and counter attacks that don't come up in a friendly spar or in sporting matches could be important, and of course in a life-or-death battle where not only your life, but the lives of your comrades or even civilians are on the line, all bets are off. On the other hand, the rules are in place in order to help prevent Disciples from injuring each other before they even see battle.

And considering after a significant amount of hard training, Wake could battle Alec to a standstill, the evidence suggests that yes, Alec was probably at least a little stronger at the time of the first match.

I have had this game for a while but only started playing it after seeing this lp. For all of this games flaws I can't bring myself to hate it. All it needs is a bit of polish and I could see myself really getting into it.

My biggest issue is that the heroines on standby don't level up so you either focus on one of them or spend hours grinding the rest up to snuff. At the moment I just use Serina because she has an attack that targets every enemy making her great for blasting through dungeons quickly. A shame because if any of the others were leveled up I'd bench her immediately.

I'm sure the dlc would remove this issue but I can't access that without switching vita accounts. Why it's such a hastle to do on vita I'll never know.

Anyway thanks for doing the LP. Loving it so far and am looking forward to seeing how things go from here.

It's questionable how much better, if at all, Alec is than Wake at that moment. However, by throwing in that thing about him breaking rules, it just undercuts any gap in skill the two might have. He used an illegal move to win, so it's impossible to tell if he actually was way better than Wake, because he cheated.

Imagine doing some boxing practice, and your trainer goes "Alright, body blows only. No shots to the head." and then your sparring partner immediately hauls back and haymakers you square in the loving face. Then everyone standing around watching goes "Huh, I guess that guy is just a way better boxer". It's total bullshit.

The school would definitely have rules in place to protect at least the Elites from getting hurt (maybe the Standards get to go all out or something, since they're not special). Plus, Wake is God's Gift. If he were seriously injured in a sparring match, then humanity is straight hosed. That was an incredibly foolish risk to take with humanity's best hope of survival. It's basically the same poo poo that Ruby has been doing. Of course, because every NPC in this game is a moron, nobody ever gets called on this or raises serious concerns.

That's one of my major problems with the writing for this game, actually. Once the prologue is finished, Wake's dire importance to the world is constantly glossed over or ignored. Characters like Ruby take insane risks with his well being and nobody seems to care. Hell, despite being the Star God's Prophecy in the flesh, the Church doesn't seem to care about Wake at all. There will be something brought up later in the story that really highlights how loosely the Church and Government are being about his security.

Glad to hear it. I'm happy doing this as long as some people are enjoying it.

Yeah, this game is a definite disappointment due to how the little bits of polish that could have easily raised it to being pretty good. I can't go into detail about why I have a soft spot for this game due to several spoilers, but I will talk about it at the end of the LP. For as generic as it is and how obnoxious some of the side characters can be, it has a certain charm about it. The Star Children are a major high point, because a lot of them are just so drat adorable and have neat little touches, like the aforementioned Lancers using Wake's sword design as their weapons, or the Thieves having little Zorro eye masks and hats. :3:

Also, I didn't know that about the DLC. I guess it's not a surprise the DLC would have been taken off PSN by this point. I wonder if the eShop still has it. Either way, this is the reason why you normally just pick one or two heroines and stick with them. Trying to keep them all leveled is a losing battle. On the plus side, their level doesn't have an impact on whether or not you can get their ending.

I'm keeping an eye on the remake of the first game. I don't expect it to ever get an English localization (I doubt this one sold enough in the West to justify it), but I do want to see if they have taken the opportunity to implement aspects from the sequel and improve on them, or if they are just going to copy-paste the gameplay and then up the polygons. For god's sake, please let them at least have added a difficulty option.

In the context of a contest with strictly defined rules for safety winning by breaking the rules implies you're the less-skilled participant. If you were better you'd be able to follow the rules and still win. Incidentally, I think it reasonably likely that the restriction was based on standard kendo one against direct stabs to the throat; it's a legal strike in competitions for highly experienced kendo practitioners but generally forbidden for inexperienced ones because even with a wooden sword and safety gear it's potentially dangerous if not done carefully. Probably Alec and Feene are good enough they'd be trusted to handle it but at least half the fencing club isn't and so it'd likely be against the default rules and Chloe is smart enough to realize that you should maybe be extra careful with the God's Gift.

On the killing with Star Energy thing, I think we may have seen the answer to why swords seem to work but also only Disciples are fighting them with that Disciple who turned into a Dusk monster. Clearly, what happened was he absorbed a bunch of Dusk Energy so he became a monster. Given that our only other known source of monsters so far is Dusk Circles and monsters predate Dusk Circles, this may be where the old ones came from (possibly it's stopped happening now that Dusk Energy is concentrating in the Dusk Circles as long as you aren't a dumbass and spend like a month straight in one). When that happens to someone, you can stab him with a sword and he's dead. But there's a big concentration of enough Dusk Energy to turn a guy into a monster pooled in his corpse. There's a bunch of things that could result from that and none of them are good. If you use Star Energy you can seal or purify the corpse. Ordinary people probably don't have no Star Energy any more than they have no Dusk Energy, so they can gather up a group of ten people and focus it somehow and get this cleaned up in a couple hours, and this worked fine when there's a couple monsters every now and then, but not fine when there's a numberless army pouring out of the Dusk Circles. Star God saw this happening and started handing out Brands so that when Alec stabs the monster he's got his Brand right up in its face and that burns away the Dusk Energy, and everyone's Dusk Breakers (I assume the rifles are also Dusk Breakers) shoot a big pulse of Star Energy so when they hit they also purify Dusk Energy. The Brands probably also protect against going all monster; it's exceedingly obvious that this guy took too many Dusk Crystals, but people without Brands may be at risk from extended proximity to, say, that big Dusk Circle we have the fortress wall around.

Which I think might be what Sasami is thinking with her peacekeeping patrol plan; we may have a patrol rota already but we were pretty lucky that a pair of Disciples happened to be walking down that exact street at just the right moment. This might be the first time it's happened inside Fort City but it's sure as hell not going to be the last. Also I figure that all three of the plans were basically establishing dedicated teams for doing something that's already being done in some capacity. You don't have a massive fortress wall and not have supply lines.

Wait, hang on, just caught something:

quote:

[Standard Disciple B]: But he was a monster. All you can do with them is kill them...

[Standard Disciple A]: I don't care, I could never kill someone I knew.

[Standard Disciple B]: Well, I mean, it's still murder. Don't get me wrong. The Nemesis Hunters just have a different way of thinking about this stuff, is all.

That very definitely sounds like this has happened often enough that Nemesis Hunters putting down people who have turned into monsters is an accepted fact of life. And while everyone is very shocked and wondering how this is possible, Chloe does say that they're researching how a Disciple turned into a monster.

Feene's the overachiever classmate who everyone loves, except she differs from the usual archetype in a big way by not being outwardly an rear end in a top hat.

Anime tends to use her types as villainous rivals (who sometimes appear outwardly nice) or jerks that take time to show their nice side whereas she seems to wear it on her sleeve.

I wouldn't say it's unusual in Anime for the overachiever classmate everyone loves to not be a huge rear end in a top hat; it is fairly common for them to be basically Chloe. What is unusual, though, is this bit:

quote:

I cannot thank you enough for sterilizing the Dusk Circle in my hometown!

Ordinarily the main character says that kind of thing to the overachiever classmate everyone loves. Then she says something modest back and goes off to overachieve somewhere else and when the midterm scores are posted and the main character is excited about getting 5th in the school her name is at the top because of course it is. Or this is Persona 3 and she tells the main character to take tactical command in the dungeon while she stays at the door providing command and control.

As for Feene's name, that's pretty well within bounds for name romanizations; her name in Japanese was presumably ふぃね/フィネ and while that has been mapped to Fine in Hepurn and Nihon-Shiki romanization schemes that's basically arbitrary. Phine would also be a pretty typical romanization, and there's usually a degree of leeway in names even when being fairly strict. I have seen Fine as a name, but that was the main villain of Symphogear so it fit

Yes, Feene is the Dusk element. If you take a look at the Element Effectiveness Chart, Dusk is super-effective against the four basic elements, which a lot of enemies up until now have been. They would obviously hold back the Dusk element character for last. It's also pretty obvious when you take into account this game's twisted logic when it comes to Elemental affinities. Torri looks like she'd be the Dusk Element character and Feene looks like the obvious Ether element character, but given what we've seen with the other heroines, that means neither of those assumptions would be correct. So Feene ends up being Dusk instead of Ether, and Torri is a weird dual element type like Serina instead of being Dusk (we don't get an Ether element character, because Ether is a very effective element in this game).

That brings me back to Ellie's bonding event. Feene is Dusk Element, but from the way that Ellie describes Dusk, you'd think Feene would be some kind of blood soaked savage. So why is Dusk "not suited" to Wake? Again, I see what the writers were attempting, as it is a very common scene, but it's fumbled pretty badly due to the way that this game treats Dusk (Dark), namely that it's not necessarily evil.

Wait, hang on, just caught something:

That very definitely sounds like this has happened often enough that Nemesis Hunters putting down people who have turned into monsters is an accepted fact of life. And while everyone is very shocked and wondering how this is possible, Chloe does say that they're researching how a Disciple turned into a monster.

You've got some points, but you've missed some things and may be reading a bit too much into other things.

Part of that might be me, because I'm not posting every database entry in order to avoid spoilers. I don't recall if this is mentioned in the story or in the database, but the method behind monsters appearing before this whole Dusk Circle business is that Dusk Energy would pool together in spots and the monsters would be born from that. That's why monsters used to be easy enough to handle by everyday people. They were scattered in random places and it may have even been possible to predict where they would appear, assuming Dusk Energy measurement tools existed back then. The Dusk Circles seem to have formed from a large amount of Dusk Energy pooling together in specific locations, then being amplified by something, although how that happened hasn't been explored yet.

People turning into monsters is also something that seems to be a fresh hell for everyone, instead of a known hell. Everyone seems pretty shocked to learn this, even people like Alec and Triche who you would assume are very well educated on Monster stuff considering their job managing defensive lines. Chloe may not specialize in monster or Dusk stuff, but she is a genius that has apparently been through University, so I would imagine she would have heard about this before if it were common knowledge. We haven't heard anything from Ruby or Mark yet, but overall there haven't been any suggestions that this has ever happened (or been observed happening) before. Remember, Dusk Crystals are a black market item that have only been occasionally found around monster nests. They aren't exactly easy or (presumably) cheap to get hold of, and their purity is also really low. Unless of course Ruby hosed up again and just left that 60+% Dusk Crystal laying around the lab, where a Standard Disciple snagged it. Not like that would come as a shock, honestly, given her track record. This appears to be a completely new development based on what we know so far.

As for those two jerk Disciples, I think they might just be referring to a standard prejudice against 'Elites'. They see Elite Disciples and Nemesis Hunters as some kind of hardened hit squad that don't bat an eye at killing in general, not just monsters. The truth is that the Elite Disciples are just teenagers, like the Standard Class. Alec is the only Elite we have seen so far (besides maybe Wake) that would come close to that distorted view the two idiots have of Hunters. Alec was bred for this after all, and even then, he doesn't "have a different way of thinking about this stuff". So I think you're reading a bit too much into that line. It's just a preconception that the lower ranked students have about the Elites.

It definitely isn't an accepted fact of life either. This is clearly the first time Alec has ever heard about people turning into monsters being a thing that can happen. The revelation hits him hard, as evident by the fact that he is going through the five stages of grief. He denies anything is wrong when Wake and Chlotz check on him, he gets angry at Wake, he gets depressed once he finally talks to someone about what he's feeling, then he reaches acceptance when Wake supports him and shows solidarity. The only stage he seems to skip is bargaining. He is clearly not accustomed to what happened and didn't think it could happen. He only seems nonplussed about the possibility that the monster killed a Disciple, but his reaction changes immediately when the logic starts to connect to it having been a Disciple.

I think their use of the word 'Disciple' is just that, word choice. The person that turned into a monster was a Disciple, so the script uses that to refer to them since their gender isn't specified. I don't think they were saying it specifically to imply that this only happens to regular people.

Alec's reaction and treatment feel to me a lot like if he killed a zombie and then figured out it was someone he'd known, so I wouldn't infer that the transformation is unprecedented. Granted, I just have what's in the updates to go on and am filling in the blanks from other, similar works. Like Tales Of Berseria, where basically the God's Gift is instead called the Shepard, Star God is called Indomat, and Ether Count is called Resonance, and you play a human who is transformed into a demon who draws in energy given off by humans having desires and devour it, specifically Wrath, and you go around storming Labryinths centered around other humans in the same boat who devour other deadly sins because at first your only motivation is VENGENCE and later because the Shepard and Indomant are having these Labryinths set up as part of their plan to eliminate demons by eliminating human desires entirely.

Basically the whole Dusk Circle plotline is as incredibly tropey as any of the heroine plotlines, it's just that the tropes are less familiar in America, so I'm expecting the rest to be equally predictable. But it might surprise me and have a different reason for why you don't stab an incarnation of desires to death with a mundane weapon and expect that to actually solve anything. Still, to date everything I've seen looks to be on track.

If anything it's lazier than usual by not having our Dusk heroine be someone who half-transformed into a monster but got interrupted so she still has her sanity but also has Dusk powers, which I was expecting to be the case given that Torri's crazy mad science experiment wasn't implanting a Dusk Crystal in her heart to give her Dusk Powers. Instead we have Feene, who has the ability to use a lot of Dusk Energy because... I guess she wants her hometown to not be wiped out by monsters more than most people want their hometown to not be wiped out by monsters?

He didn't know the person though, or at least he didn't seem to know her. Luce did, because it was a classmate of hers. Alec is an Elite though, he's in a completely different class. He also isn't exactly the sociable type, so it's doubtful he knows anyone personally outside of Luce and Wake.

There are some parallels to Berseria and Zesteria, but it doesn't quite match up. For one thing, the Deadly Sins are kind of abandoned as far as a plot device for this game. The game does little or nothing with them, and only a few characters in the entire story could be reasonably matched up with particular ones.

I'm not saying this plot isn't tropey as all hell. I'm sure half of the people reading this thread (or more) have some major plot points in mind that they just know the game will pull at some point. You just learn to look for the details in stories. I just think you might be reading a bit too much into certain things. Granted, I'm doing the same. I can't tell you 100% that people turning into monsters is something that has never happened in this world. I can't recall if the game just glosses over this or if it actually does confirm or deny it at some point. I guess I'm just interpreting character reactions from a different view than yours.

Of course, a lot of literature is open to interpretation. That's what I like about it, so it's nice to see the angle you are approaching from.

Edit: I harp on this a lot, since the game doesn't seem to do it outside of the database, but 'Dusk' doesn't appear to be a negative or evil presence. Dusk is only causing problems right now because it's out of balance. It's a perfectly normal, not evil, element of this world. Without it, humans would have no desires, good or bad. Monsters spawning from it when it pools together is just a part of their natural world. There hasn't been any indication that it's possible to completely stop monsters from ever spawning, even when the world is in perfect balance. It just happens. Feene or any other character being of the Dusk Element doesn't mean they are at risk of becoming horrible monsters. The Gracia Church is entirely devoted to the Dusk Element, and they are as much a part of the Aterra Church as a whole as any of the others. They chill out by the Rootstone and Ellie didn't say anything about routine monster outbreaks happening there.

So, here's a random bit of fun for the day. At least, I thought it was pretty entertaining. I was searching for info on the remake of the first Conception game to see if something new had turned up, and here's what Google delivered to me:

That character is one of the heroines from the first Conception game. :3: Google search is so fun sometimes.

Well, they're using the Deadly Sins for the Labryinths and their bosses are named after western demons. So I wouldn't expect our heroines to be the Seven Deadly Sins; if anything they'd be the Seven Heavenly Virtues. I don't think they quite map; we've got Narika for Humility(subsidiary Charity) and Chloe and Feene as Patience and Diligence, but Ellie as Temperance is a stretch and the other three don't have obvious matches among Kindness, Charity, and Chastity.

Also, Dusk being a natural part of the world that humans need to have desires but also sometimes causes horrible monster outbreaks is, uh, exactly why it reminds me of Tales of Berseria. When the world is purified in that one humans stop having desires, that is why Velvet needs to eat Indomat to save the world.

I know Berseria isn't that new, but still sucks to be spoiled on major plot points since I'm in the middle of playing it :/

I thought that this was more well known, but the bosses are named after the demons of each sin. Asmodeus is the demon of Lust, and Beelzebub is the demon of Gluttony. We don't know the order of the labryinths, but we know what the boss of each one should be.

Since Alec is a dude and has Ether of his own, is there any reason he couldn't accompany Wake into the labyrinth? Going on his own he wouldn't be able to produce an ether field of meaningful density and would be doomed, but if there's already an ether field because of Wake he wouldn't be drawing on it like a female disciple / Star Child would and so wouldn't count against the cap.

Presumably he's busy commanding the fortress wall garrison while Wake is halfway across the world.

I am wondering a bit about why Feene isn't coming, because I kinda think if Wake were to call her it would go like this:

Wake: Hey, Feene, there's a new Dusk Circle opening up, but you don't have to-
*sound of Feene's front door slamming*
Feene: I will be at the airport in twenty minutes!

My assumption is that it has been determined that they don't need her for this Dusk Circle so they have chosen not to call her and tell her about it.

I don't have a strong memory for the exact mappings of various demons so I wasn't sure. Mind, if they stick to the source material, we do know the order:

1.Lust
2.Gluttony
3.Greed
4.Sloth
5.Wrath
6.Envy
7.Pride

That's not definite because there's been various other orderings used, but we can be confident Pride is seventh.

This is partially a problem with the game not firmly establishing the Star Energy and Brand stuff. Males seem to use Star Energy to fight as well, and Wake's Ether field is only strong enough for a single S-Rank Disciple at a time inside Labyrinths. I guess he could take Alec with him in theory, but then they wouldn't be able to take any Star Children, since there would be no mom's. Again, it's very shaky. It's just safe to assume that Alec needs to use Star Energy to fight as well, and Wake's Ether just can't support him plus an S-Rank girl. Since the Star Children need a mom with them, and up to 9 of them can go in, it's more logical to take a heroine than it would be to take Alec.

I see what you are saying, Alec's Ether would act kind of like a small extra battery and wouldn't be as big a strain on Wake. The only explanation I have is that Wake's and the accompanying heroine's combined power draw is equal to or a tiny bit less than the cap, which means there still wouldn't be enough for Alec. That's the best I got.

She did say she would do anything and wants to be his strength...

In all seriousness, the likely explanation is simply bad timing. The next circle hadn't produced a Labyrinth yet, so Feene decided to take the chance and head back home to shore up defenses or visit family or whatever she's doing. While she's away the Labyrinth springs up and they can't wait for Feene to get back. Despite my farting around with bond events and writing LP Wake as being in charge of when the group rolls out, the story acts like the group heads out immediately after getting authorization. Usually that means 10am the following morning. I guess it would take a few days for Feene to get back from the continent. The game doesn't do a good job of establishing times. It's hard to tell how long it takes to travel to places in this world.

All the sin stuff assumes that the game actually does something with it, which it doesn't. Which is unfortunate because they have a good set up with the heroines. Serina could be envy, do to her wanting to look 'like an S-Rank should', for example. It doesn't quite map out, but it could.

There are a bunch of characters in this game that click with the 7 Deadly Sins motif really really well, but then some of the sins don't really match with anyone. I can't really think of anyone that would match Sloth for example, but Pride and Envy match with quite a few.

It seems like they wanted this to be a plot thing, but dropped it due to time constraints. Or it is a remnant of a previous script that they didn't bother to change. Who knows.
