Addamere posted:I can get on board with the idea of splitting the cohort, both because of american culture and internet usage. Some people currently grouped as millennials have memory of what America was like prior to 9/11, and can speak to the change that occurred as a result: airport security theatre, the rise in hate crimes and xenophobia, etc. The younger millennials, who grew up and became cognizant in a "post-9/11 world" have only ever known America as a hateful cesspool, and are keenly aware of it because they've been exposed to the opinions of our loudest bigots constantly through social media. You could probably pare this down even further, looking at the evolution of specific social media platforms and specific cultural movements throughout the years that are presently used to define the millennial cohort: there's a big different, say, between someone whose first cell phone was a Motorola Razor and who used Facebook or Myspace in 2005, versus someone whose first cell phone was an iPhone and was introduced to Facebook or Twitter in 2010. drat you pegged me on this one, my first phone was a "Razr" at 17 and myspace became a big thing when I was maybe a sophomore in high school, I was 12 on 9/11 (late 80s baby) and there is a huge divide in political / social perspective between me and someone just like 5 years younger

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...a-idUSKCN1N52V6 Canada is now prioritizing the deportation of those it's rejected asylum claims from those who have crossed over the border with the US. As this dude puts it: quote:A CBSA inland enforcement officer said the tradeoff is that deportees who could pose a real public safety risk are not getting deported. Color me shocked at who the focus is on: quote:A CBSA spokesman said in an email that the agency prioritizes “irregular” failed refugee claimants along with criminals as a top priority, followed by other failed refugee claimants, but would not say why. 36,000 people have fled into Canada from the United States since Jan 2017 btw.

Plinkey posted:now that i've thought about it more...did you save up money from your poo poo job, or mowing yards to buy the D2 expansion on the day is came out in a thriving mall at gamestop? I distinctly recall video games, and especially computer games, being precious and few. I recall buying Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri in the bargain bin of Wal-Mart, alongside a copy of Myst, each for $5. I also recall buying both the Morrowind GOTY Edition and the Diablo 2 Battle Chest at that same Wal-Mart. I'd accumulated a few dozen SNES and N64 games over the years, but the computer games were precious things that each individually ate up hundreds or more likely thousands of hours of play over the years. Except Myst. I recall getting stuck on the music puzzle and giving up. e: Compare this to now, where I have nearly 200 titles on Steam with many I've never even touched. But when I was in college I hung out with a crew who were already pulling $50k+ as 18-21yo's, and when the first dotcom bubble burst in 2001, they were grandfathered into a gravy train compared to the folks who thought a degree or certification program was going to get them a gig. By 2003 RTP seemingly wanted 2-3yrs experience, not a degree, I eventually moved toward Philly and found a job putting computers together.
