What's with the NDP and Star Trek?

I really, really don't want to know the answer to that question.

The Maquis were poo poo for brains space libertarians and I'm glad the Dominion burned most of them to death and turned the rest into refugees

I think that the JJ Abrams Star Trek films are a pretty good indicator of what market research revealed to be the essence of Star Trek to nostalgic baby boomers and you won't find any hint whatsoever of utopian socialism, futurist speculation or people in poorly fitting jumpsuits and weird makeup talking about high culture.

quote:Peterson’s ample ego formed early. One of his first memories is watching Robert Kennedy’s funeral on TV and thinking, I’ll have a funeral like that one day. When he was 13, his school librarian was Sandy Notley, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s mother, and she introduced him to George Orwell, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Ayn Rand. He worked for the NDP throughout most of his teenage years. While he admired leaders like Ed Broadbent, he became disillusioned by the party’s peevish functionaries. He found Orwell’s The Road to Wigan Pier, which he read as an undergrad at Grand Prairie, enlightening: “Orwell did a political-psychological analysis of the motivations of the intellectual, tweed-wearing middle-class socialist and concluded that people like that didn’t like the poor; they just hated the rich,” he says. “I thought, Aha! That’s it: it’s resentment.” Anyone who set out to change the world by first changing other people was suspicious. So relatable.

You really have to appreciate how absolutely everything these guys make looks like it was designed by someone's nephew who is "good with computers" and "a bit of an artist". Sloppy dogshit garbage is one hell of a brand identity, I tell you what

I mean I guess it makes sense for a populist party to brand themselves by making everything look like it was made with a 20 year old copy of Corel Draw that came free with a computer magazine. It's a distillation of every small business ad I've ever seen on rural diner placemats and community newsletters in southern Ontario.

Also this fits perfectly within my tripartite model of Canadian politics where the Liberals are the party of big businessmen, the Conservatives are the party of insane small business owners, and the NDP are the party of underemployed people with graduate degrees.
