the problem with a lot of those maoist groups, and not just them but other groups as well, is that they have no grounding in the working class or labor organizing. if you spend time talking to some of them, you come away with the impression that no one is "working class" and that often they can only talk about workers in the abstract. so like a university adjunct isnt a worker, an AC repairman isnt a worker cause he makes $60k a year, etc. many of them will even outright say that there are no "workers" in the US as were all just paid off labor aristocracy. if you take that stance, you really destroy any and all hope of connecting with anyone around you on a material basis. its why they engage in ultra-left stuff like the severed pig heads and are dismissive of genuine workers movements. I had one tell me recently that the west virginia teachers strike was a waste because they were just striking for higher wages and not an end to capitalism. as if the entirety of the struggle for socialism isnt based around workers organizing and fighting for their own self-interest.

The idea that our task is to win over people to new, emancipatory political perspectives is lost on them. That task, in practice, is not a glamorous one. not to keep on the derail, but I think its also telling that many of those groups seem to spring up in the south and southwest, places where theres low levels of labor organizing and low levels of political consciousness among workers. I think in those conditions it becomes easy for individuals to fall into ultra-left tendencies and approaches because there isnt a vibrant labor movement that can serve as a pole of attraction for people who are coming to revolutionary political conclusions on their own.

I once had a conversation with some college Maoists and I asked them about things like third worldism and ruralist initiatives and expressed my skepticism as a communist that their violent neo Luddism was compatible with modern dialectics in the most basic sense and they accused me of being historically ignorant because of my bourgeois consciousness which is a pretty good burn
