Imagine being an immortal in charge of a small group of 1000 or so people and eventually you develop a national ethos and they follow your orders almost unquestionably as they develop into a civilization of millions? Must be uncomfortable to realize you have people depending on you.

I guess it's selfish of me, but admittedly I hope I never hit the point where I feel legit uncomfortable playing Civilization. I feel like I gotta be able to take off that lens sometime and just enjoy dumb things for what they are, or else I'll go crazy.

Civ 4 corporations made most tiles completely worthless in the late game which has the side effect of letting you just run endless specialists forever with no drawback so long as you could maintain food balance. E: Rereading this, this might be the most realistic Civ has ever been as a matter of fact.

You are not actually controlling the American/French/Indian/whoever government and none of the millions of people you are killing with your warmongering or oppressive administrative policies actually exist, you are literally just raising and lowering numbers in a database. China has been quite monolithic throughout history. Not necessarily "unified", as if often fragmented, but the idea of a single united China has been alive in China itself for thousands of years. And it was often a reality. So having a single China civilization seems appropriate. India not so much I guess... but I think it's mostly supposed to represent today's India, something like the Australian civ. Or the American one.

There's been a China for thousands of years (mostly) but it hasn't always been the same China, or that similar to modern-day China (depending how far back you look). Basically give us the Zhou, Qin, Han, Tang, Song, etc. as their own civ. It wouldn't be weirder than having both Rome and Byzantium. Edit: Or bring back different leaders for civs (that aren't Greece or India), that was a good way to make one specific period of a civ's history more prominent. There's a cultural continuity to India's vedic tradition that's super old. The problem isn't so much China and India as it is including every single minor variation of Western Europe.

Poil posted:5000 years! Egypt is legit around 5000 years old. The first dynasty was founded around 3000BC. There are archeological remains in China that are about that old but the first dynasty that's recognizably Chinese is the Shang (starting circa 1600BC). That's when you see the early forms of Chinese writing appear, some traditions like ancestor worship and so on. So it's "only" around 3,600 years. Although there's less continuity in Egypt after the Roman period, honestly. China is like if Egypt never stopped using hieroglyphics and the native religion never died out.

Highdea: Give civs a new UA every era. Like they just stack, but your earlier ones become progressively less useful as the game goes on because they're related to that phase of the game. Manifest Destiny is super powerful early in the game, but it falls off as you acquire more land area quickly, your economy goes wild, and your borders start getting solidified. Or like the Japanese fishing boats UA, that's what they start with and it's supremely useful in the beginning of the game but by the classical era nobody gives a poo poo about an extra culture or two. In the modern era they get Anime. Increases export income from trade routes. Enables UU of GDR. Something like Wayfinding would be a Medieval UA. You get to move into ocean tiles one age early, but it doesn't have to be this broken thing you start with; Polynesia's stone age unique would be like Mana Pōhaku +1 Culture +1 Gold from improved farm-type bonus tiles.
|
# ? Nov 7, 2018 02:10 |

Civ Revolution actually works like that, but it's mostly boring bonuses like a flat bonus to great people points or trade income when you reach a specific era. And you're mostly describing stuff that actually is in Civ VI; America gets bonuses to national parks and some government bonuses that don't kick in until later, Japan gets special factories that give culture once you discover electronics, and Norway gets ocean travel an era early.

How much do you like the base game? Rise and Fall is just more of the same, good ideas that are half-assed in some weird ways. Loyalty is real neat and lets you flip cities neighboring cities with some effort and punish forward settlers with extreme prejudice, governors can be made to do some fun things if you plan for it, and golden ages are cool but weirdly limiting. Emergencies and advanced alliances are real cool when they do work, but that happens very rarely because diplomacy is wonky and buggy and unlikely to see a patch anytime soon. Oh, and 8 new civs and Chandragupta. They're pretty cool. Georgia has a real sweet chanting monks theme.
