Anecdotal evidence, but a couple of the gius behind me in the line were talking about voting and stuff. One said it was his first time voting in a midterm and the other said it was his first time voting ever. The LV models are way off this go-round

Last election I was the only voter in my circle of friends. This year, all of em (+8) have already voted, even a first time ever voter. Been really interesting to watch.

I had an accelerationist acquaintance in 2016 who argued that Trump should be elected because it would expose how awful the GOP truly was and lead to a blue wave in 2018 and 2020. He was a dumbass and the damage Trump has done and will continue to do is not worth it, but the silver lining is looking to be that he was right about the blue wave part. I hope.

Maybe I'm just an idiot who has no idea what they're talking about, but I think we were screwed no matter which way the election went. We still would have had a Republican congress even if Clinton won and they would have blocked her every step of the way (except when their interests aligned which would alienate the progressive voters even more), including any SC nominees, meanwhile dissatisfaction with Dems would continue to rise while Reps would still be considered the opposition party who didn't have that pressure to deliver and they would probably gain even more congressional seats in '18 and then ride the resentment from the economy correcting itself into 2020 with a more competent Trump-like figure and all of this would happen anyway, just later and with an extra 4 years of stagnation and disillusioned voters inbetween. To me, it really feels like we've been doomed since the 2000 election went to Bush, maybe I'm wrong. I guess if the Obama administration had been better at punishing and correcting the previous administration's mistakes then things might be different but that's not what happened.

The tiny optimist inside me is grateful that Trump won when he did, sparing us from a more competent monster, and holds out hope that the country will emerge from 2020 healthier and more politically sober and will shake off the worst of the fascist fringe impulses for another decade or two. The giant roaring nihilist that is inside the rest of me is pretty sure the United States is beyond hope and that my life will be spent riding out the collapse.

To me, it really feels like we've been doomed since the 2000 election went to Bush, maybe I'm wrong. I guess if the Obama administration had been better at punishing and correcting the previous administration's mistakes then things might be different but that's not what happened. I heard an interesting interview on NPR which suggests the doom started with Newt Gingrich. After Watergate, the Republicans in congress had mostly resigned themselves to being a minority for a generation, focusing on civility and working to shift things incrementally rightward (hey, does that description sound familiar....?), and then Newt Gingrich started not only framing every single bill as an epic battle between Good and Democrats, but also sending like-minded politicians and candidates cassette tapes with instructions on what to say in speeches. The 'Contract With America' Republicans actually accomplished most of what they said they were going to do in the first hundred days (not that most of it became law - it died in the Senate or was vetoed by Bill Clinton) but then they didn't know what to do after that, except oppose Democrats, because they'd gotten good at that while the minority. I don't know that you're wrong about what two years of "Hillary can't accomplish anything! She lets Republicans walk all over her! SETH RICH SETH RICH COMET PIZZA BENGHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZI" would have been like. I expect that we'd have seen the mail bombs and the Nazi and quasi-Nazi and Nazi-adjacent rallies, too, probably even before the inauguration, and while it would have been better not to have had POTUS tacitly encouraging them, being unable to stop them wouldn't have looked great. There wouldn't have been a Women's March or the motivation to get Republicans out, and any investigation into Russian interference would have looked like petty partisan politics, so instead of early voting already exceeding 2014's total turnout, we'd all be posting "yeah I saw two other people voting and I dropped the average age by twenty years" instead of "wtf I had to wait forty-five minutes at ten am on a weekday". FBS posted:The tiny optimist inside me is grateful that Trump won when he did, sparing us from a more competent monster, and holds out hope that the country will emerge from 2020 healthier and more politically sober and will shake off the worst of the fascist fringe impulses for another decade or two. Yeah. A more competent monster, who could point to Madam President being useless? Plus continued active Russian interference? (Would Facebook have had a "are we the baddies?" moment if Trump hadn't won?) That would have been horrendous. On the other hand... Also, out of ten or a dozen volunteers for our block walk shift, at least eighty percent or so were first time volunteers like me. That tells me something.

I was at the Denton county elections office for election official training. They gave us some stats to chew on. Currently 46% of all registered voters have cast their ballot during early voting. 2014 had 35% turnout and 2016 had 65% turnout. 538 model assumed a 40% turnout. Shits gonna be broken as gently caress

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/2018-elections/2018/11/02/beto-orourke-texas-early-voting-turnout-continues-win Early-voting data from Target Smart, a Democratic political data company, shows that the youth vote in Texas has jumped 508 percent since 2014, Newsweek reported, and voters over the age of 65 increased by 96 percent. More than 200,000 first-time voters had cast ballots in Texas by Thursday, the company said. ----- young ppl are also really small segment of the electorate so their turnout increases bring much smaller number of voters than similar levels with olds
