Every time I read about cruise ships I get depressed. They seem like the most wasteful, touristy bullshit imaginable. Like people have this desire to see far away places, but can't stand to be away from familiar western consumer culture for more than five loving minutes. It always reminds me of one of my aunts, who went to Cairo on her honeymoon and spent most of her time there playing golf.

After taking a private marshrutka from Kiev to Odessa on short notice, I don't think I could ever do something as bland as ride on a cruise ship. Or at least my ex claimed it was a marshrutka. I think it was just a dude with a semi-working van who took money to drive people between cities. He got us there in 4 hours, and the proper bus we took back to Kiev the next day took 8. It was also my first trip outside the US. Highly recommend.

Honestly most people tourist destinations are happy for you to stay in and visit the touristy areas and not try to have a “local” experience. Spend your money and get out 👉🏾

Yeah I'm from Florida where everyone's already an American and are used to dealing with America every day and that's 100% the attitude, I imagine it's way more intense in non-American touristy places who don't need even more American bullshit in their lives.

We were there to play a gig in Odessa, and we failed to get SIM cards right away, so we had no way of contacting the guys picking us up at the transit station. About an hour into the trip, a guy sitting behind us, whose headphones were obviously bumping the same kind of music we play, tapped my partner on the shoulder and said, "Are you [so-and-so]? Igor wants to talk to you," and hands over his phone. Turns out the guys picking us up at Boryspil took an Instagram photo to announce our arrival, and the guys who needed to meet us in Odessa saw it and commented that they were trying to get ahold of us. The kid in the back seat of the marshrutka saw the post, recognized us, and made sure everyone got connected. I loving love Ukraine.

This reminds me of one from back when I was a kid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6roevoWFCA and https://www.nytimes.com/1999/05/16/sports/horse-racing-notebook-spectator-interferes-with-race-at-pimlico.html Of course, if I remember correctly, they found some serious drugs were involved. Now that I think of it though, horse racing itself is probably pretty OSHA behind the scenes. Biggest occupational hazards are falling off if you're riding, or getting kicked if you're working with them in the sheds. I've personally been headbutted by a horse (which probably explains a lot ) Edit: Not drugs, depression: https://www.nytimes.com/1999/05/18/sports/horse-racing-notebook-pimlico-intruder-wanted-to-commit-suicide.html Epsilon Moonshade fucked around with this message at 21:12 on Nov 4, 2018 |

Dog racing is the wildest wrecks, hands down. 70 lbs of dog doesn't stop if it loses traction at 55 MPH and a dog will wipe out half the other dogs running. There's no good news. They die from their injuries or are simply put down. Now harness racing is way more dangerous than thoroughbreds and quarter horse. Jockeys don't die as often as drivers; drivers are the riders that do harness races. Those wrecks are way more violent, since you're adding a cart and harness and wheels to the equation. Most people have seen the video of the cart get pole vaulted. Not as many have seen the one where the gate car spun out on ice and all the horses in the field crashed into the gate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhynju2qetY I hate animal sports.

Sure you can choose to really learn a local's point of view of a place but that's not how these cities and towns are setup anymore. If dogs didn't die from running so loving fast I wouldn't feel bad about letting people bet on them chasing a toy. But as soon as you add betting, it's a matter of time before they get bred and trained to literally kill or injure themselves, and owners are not held accountable to actually care for the animals injury, and find it cheaper and more convenient to kill it. Then again, a lot of "regular" pet owners do the same thing when Skippy keeps pissing on the rug. Horses have the added factor of being so loving stupid that they almost always eventually get injured and they are so frail that they will die from almost any injury.

Thoroughbred racing has the least of those problems and it’s still bad. Harness and quarter horse races are bad and then other animals (ie dogs) are a disaster. But I’m from Kentucky and only seen the horse industry in central Kentucky - a Kentucky bred thoroughbred is almost always worth something so the worst abuses happen elsewhere. A horse is a complete failure at the track? Some rich person from New England/mideast/asia will buy it for their daughter and proudly say they have a Kentucky race horse. Ps Wild horses are pretty fragile too - basically all herbivores cant handle broken legs.

Do they have steeplechase in the US? Horse racing over jumps and pools of water and poo poo? Every year here the racing season starts and every year some poor horse falls over and breaks a leg and they shoot it. I'm not a fan of horses but I'm even less a fan of sending them out to die so people can gamble. Also the jockeys get injured to but gently caress'em they had the choice not to do it.

Eventing is a thing in the US but there aren't low level steeplechases you can bet on like in England.
