How bad are things in Brazil for the people to elect basically a fascist? Like what is life like of an average Brazilian?

Lots of poor and middle-class dumb fucks did too, believe it. Minorities and not-minorities. It's all about Bolsonazi "being the anti-corruption savior" even though he's already calling some corrupt fuckers to become his ministers. Brazilians are just the dumbest people on Earth, even more than Americans.

There's also the violence factor too. Just like with Duterte, rising violence levels makes people more willing to support 'extreme' enforcement of law.

One factor that probably contributes to the visibility of violence is the fact that there's security cameras everywhere, so heaps of robbery murders are caught on tape and the news has no issues playing them.

Violence by itself as an explanation for Bolsonaro is pretty misleading. The murder rate in Brazil is going up, but generally in small increments: And Brazil is generally far more violent in the places that Bolsonaro did worse: In fact, Rio (as seen in the first graph) and Sao Paulo are far from the worse days of violence: So it's not so much that violence has gotten worse. Because outside of Acre, Bolsonaro did far better in states with a declining or very low homicide rate (Bolsonaro's best performance was in Santa Catarina, which has the country's second lowest homicide rate). The thing is that a mix of media and a racialized and classist discourse can be pretty strong in stoking fears in the population. In that sense, it is not unlike winning an election in North Dakota by stoking fears of MS-13. Bolsonaro won in plenty of states where safety is a top 3 concern for less than half of the population: https://g1.globo.com/politica/eleic...sas-ibope.ghtml While personally and in terms of policy Bolsonaro may be more like Duterte than Trump, the Brazilian election campaign is a lot more like what happened in 2016 in the US: a candidate that was considered by most to be a joke was left alone and given unlimited media time due to outrageous things he said. Meanwhile, the establishment parties PT and PSDB have been very publicly duking it out for 16 years, with ever increasing corruption scandals. By the time either party decided to pay attention to Bolsonaro, it was too late and the attacks came out as self interest. What happened in Brazil wasn't so much that everyone became suddenly extreme right. What happened was that the center collapsed. The worst economic crisis recorded in history, the biggest corruption scandal in history, etc. all had a bigger role than violence. In a sense, the remarkable thing isn't that Bolsonaro had so many votes. But that PT had so many. PT has been singled out by the courts and by the media in the corruption scandal for nearly 4 years. While PT left the presidency a couple of years ago, it still gets most of the blame for the current economic crisis. To add to all of this, PT was extremely incompetent in terms of running a campaign. They insisted on Lula when it was clear that he wasn't going to be allowed to run and then only promoted Haddad, who had 0 national profile with about 2 months to the election. With all of this, PT only lost about 7 million votes compared to 2014.

it's like with trump. people have a choice between the status quo which sucks and anything but the status quo. people don't understand that trump-like figures means doubling down on the status quo and making it worse lol, but it's cathartic to throw the embodiment of the status quo out when they're making your life miserable

Rated PG-34 posted:I have a gay Brazilian friend who defends bolsonaro so lol As I've said before here, Brazilian inequality and selective law enforcement is such that maintaining that wealth and income are all that matters for professionals and the upper middle classes. If you are white and/or upper middle class or above, laws restricting abortion, same sex marriage, marijuana, etc don't apply to you. To put it perhaps oversimplified terms, the average upper middle class urban female or gay man in the US right now votes democratic out of a fear of either abortion, same sex marriage, or anti-discrimination laws being abolished, and that is likely to be their primary concern. In Brazil, someone in that scenario likely votes out of fear of being attacked by the dirty poors or of being annoyed that they can't force their maid to work 6 and a half days a week anymore. If you know or were brought up in this scenario in Brazil, you likely know some girl who suddenly decided to go on an "exchange program" out of the blue, or a gay couple that everyone knows is gay and living together but no one openly talks about that. They are just "friends."

I had to go in 7 times and was only dismissed on the last cut (when they asked me if I was interested in a career in the army and I said no). I did get a laugh out of how soldiers went from being absolute assholes while you are enlisting to being incredibly helpful and subservient once you're put in the CPOR track.

I'm the odd case who ended up doing a year of military service even though I didn't want to. There were a dozen of other poor fuckers who also didn't. Weirdly enough I served with some dudes who where too thin (like me back then, 59kg), too short and too obese. It wasn't that bad though because I mostly did easy as poo poo office work and they paid me a free graphic design course. Got a nice first-hand experience about how military people are dumb as a bag of bricks though, officer or not.

I'm not sure if categorizing Lula to the U.S. democrats is accurate either. Mark Blyth quickly summed up Brazil and Lula's Boso Familia to 2011. That sounds impressive me and Glenn seemed to have some praise for it despite his criticisms of Lula. Rousseff succeeded Lula afterwards but it seems like the far right was gunning to get rid of her. Chomsky did a recent piece on the Intercept after visiting Lula before the elections. How hard have conservatives been working against (The workers party) PT to undermine their work at all levels of government given their history of military dictatorship and influence from the U.S.? It seems like there is a lot to dig through but I'm willing to assume it was their work that triggered the recession in 2014. Chomsky mentioned in his piece that Stiglitz was it was work of the global financial elite. Mark Blyth also did a short recent interview post election with Jim Green. As many have mentioned, basically the upper middle class turned to fascism. Some of the more notable things I didnt know was immunity to prosecution while IN office and the mentioned of the WhatsApp. I'm not sure if anyone recalls this article but it kinda sums up how social media also played a role in Brazil much like our own 2016 election. https://twitter.com/broderick/status/1056677302959030272 Bonus link Operation Car Wash used to attack the left. Interesting the judge that launched the investigation was made top justice minister.

Greenwald is referring not to what Lula personally believes or the positions he holds, but to Lula and the PT in government, who didn't make taxes more progressive, change the concentration of the media in the hands of the powerful or do any larger scale structural change. What Lula did was essentially maintain the political status quo so that there was this big business + labor party alliance that allowed the PT to expand social programs and a social safety net. That alliance broke at the sign of economic trouble. Now, you could make an argument (which is one that I believe) that Lula operated at the margins of the possible, and that any attempts to move beyond what he did would have led to an earlier ouster, but that is pretty much the main complaint from PSOL et al.
