We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

As a Chicagoan, I'm tremendously relieved that we're (apparently) out of the running.

I had much the same feeling when we were the first ones knocked out of contention for the 2016 Olympics, for being too transparently corrupt for the IOC, which is hilarious all by itself.

its really funny that the tech companies are like VOTE PLEASE!!!!!!! because in reality there isnt a single state referendum they actually want me to vote for. every single one either doesnt affect them or would reduce their power over workers. yes, i bet google and amazon really want rent control in california so their workers aren't terrified of losing their jobs lol

I know that every city government wants to give Amazon a million perks because they think getting the company to come there would boost their economy (and probably it'll wind up like all those cities that pay through the nose for the olympics or the world cup and never see a dime), but why on Earth is the biggest city on the planet groveling for a big company?

If anywhere can afford to play hardball with a big tech company, it's NYC.

because they want all those new Amazon workers to vote for them. Amazon HQ2 will mostly employ well-paid white engineers and managers, and whether they're hired locally or come from afar hardly matters to these local and state officials who want to claim credit

they don't care what you vote for. after 2016, they're facing a lot of criticism for their impact on the political process, so they're making a very visible show of being apparently neutral and community-minded

the fact that GOTV efforts inherently favor Dems is fine for them, because Dems are madder at them about 2016, and the slim chance of a Senate flip means that even big Dem victories will likely lead to a Congress too divided to regulate tech companies in any way

it shows since google search has become increasingly Bollocks and Shite the past few years.

Used to be able to find what very specifically what I want in a few lines of results or one or two refinements of my search
Now I get bombarded with completely unrelated poo poo.

yeah the reason that cities are falling over themselves to pay amazon to set up shop there is because the only constituents* city politicians care about are upper-class (usually white) professionals and its dogma among these people that the end-all solution to having a good city is to have as many upper-class professionals as possible

*: not including donors, landlords, and multinational firms like amazon itself here because they arent the city politicians' constituents, theyre their bosses

definitely a worthwhile long form article to send to people who buy into that the AI is going to save us from the algorithm

quote:

The Christian mom isn’t the only bot to successfully antagonize men on Twitter. Sarah Nyberg developed a social justice feminist bot that would post statements like “feminism is good,” “patriarchy exists,” “Drudge Report fans are toxic and terrible,” “nothing true is ever said in gamergate” and then, in her words, “watch desperate internet assholes rush to yell at them.” Nyberg’s bot didn’t do much to conceal its true nature. It tweeted every ten minutes exactly, the only accounts it followed were bait shops, and its handle was @arguetron. But it was “honey for internet jerks” who would “spend hours and hours yelling at it.” @arguetron would reply to every reply with simple statements like “The data disagrees with you,” “Would you like a medal for being so wrong,” “That’s gibberish, try again,” or “You haven’t said anything i haven’t heard 1000 times before from other people who were also wrong.” Yet one InfoWars fan spent almost 10 hours trying to get the last word on feminism and social justice, with indignant comments like “Typical lib, when u can’t prove something you pretend the other side isn’t making sense.”

[CA] Found out that work was monitoring my home computer when they fired me for watching porn on my own time at home - is this legal? (self.legaladvice)

I use my laptop for both personal use and work. It is my laptop, I purchased it, and I owned it before starting this job.

In order to use it for work, they installed a bunch of work-related software on it. Apparently some of that software was monitoring my activity, because today I was fired for watching porn on the laptop. I have never watched porn on company time or in a company building, only on my own time at home.

First, is it legal for them to be monitoring my personal computer like this?

Second, is it legal for them to fire me for my actions off work in my own home? Thank you.
