it is a fool who stays alive - but such fools are we.
Wrt the emt prop, I think it pretty much never helps when voters make even the most cursory look at propositions and see "no opposing arguments were submitted against this proposition," as was the case for prop 11.

Yeah there's some of that but I mean, I went in and voted in person today because I didn't get my ballot in the mail and the drat thing explicity said "reduces corporate liability" in plain black and white on there (because it kind of summarizes in a sentence or two what Yes and No mean for each) and if you can't identify those words and realize that is a bad thing in 2018 you're probably a fuckwit tbh.

"Hm yes reduced corporate liability with regards to ambulances, that's good." - an idiot probably

I would be surprised if even 5% of the voting public could explain, using their own words, what "corporate liability" means, and be vaguely correct.

Worked in a hospital for years and I've seen a lot of fat EMTs. But still overall healthier than nurses, cops, and firefighters.

11 was framed as “can EMTs blow off your heart attack because they’re on break and they think these hot dogs are more important” and not on the much more accurate “can EMTs be entitled to compensation pay from their employer if your heart attack erases their break.”

Prop 11's framing and advertising was extremely slick. It sounded great to me with cursory reading, which is all most voters do, if that. A little scrutiny revealed it to be a sham of course.

Prop 8 was similar. I did not expect them to be so lopsided tho :/

San Diego local races have some good news. Dems look to be flipping a Republican city council seat, which would give them a 6-3 supermajority and the ability to override the (R) mayor’s veto. And a lovely machine Dem is losing to her former staffer who quit in disgust.

California gets credit for being a liberal fortress in the same way Pelosi and Feinstein get credit for being socialists.

Possible a lot of his votes came from Republicans who didn't know anything about him. Campaigning might've actually reduced his vote share, lol

I think 11's actual effect is pretty much limited to whether ambulance companies are liable for their past labor violations. (And that bit still may get thrown out of Prop 11 by the courts regardless).

As far as I understand it, the change to labor law going forward is basically the same as the law changes the union and companies compromised on last year, but that bill died in the state senate after passing the house with disagreement about whether it would be retroactive. So it's a money transfer from EMTs to the companies, but doesn't have public safety impacts.

3 failing is the one I'm surprised at. I would have thought "Water Infrastructure! (but mostly agriculture handouts)" would have picked up enough low-information liberal voters + high-information central valley voters to sneak through.

This is what the election maps show. De Leon is getting a lot of votes from the rural parts of California, lol.

Anyways, he definitely could have campaigned harder, but he also didn’t have nearly as much money for ads as Feinstein. It was an uphill battle from the beginning.

well hes been saying flatly "no, gently caress off" to the national administration for two solid years while democratic leadership was waffling around about bipartisanship, for one thing

quote:

Today, we woke up feeling like strangers in a foreign land, because yesterday Americans expressed their views on a pluralistic and democratic society that are clearly inconsistent with the values of the people of California.

We have never been more proud to be Californians.

By a margin in the millions, Californians overwhelmingly rejected politics fueled by resentment, bigotry, and misogyny.

The largest state of the union and the strongest driver of our nation’s economy has shown it has its surest conscience as well.

California is – and must always be – a refuge of justice and opportunity for people of all walks, talks, ages and aspirations – regardless of how you look, where you live, what language you speak, or who you love.

California has long set an example for other states to follow. And California will defend its people and our progress. We are not going to allow one election to reverse generations of progress at the height of our historic diversity, scientific advancement, economic output, and sense of global responsibility.

We will be reaching out to federal, state and local officials to evaluate how a Trump Presidency will potentially impact federal funding of ongoing state programs, job-creating investments reliant on foreign trade, and federal enforcement of laws affecting the rights of people living in our state. We will maximize the time during the presidential transition to defend our accomplishments using every tool at our disposal.

While Donald Trump may have won the presidency, he hasn’t changed our values. America is greater than any one man or party. We will not be dragged back into the past. We will lead the resistance to any effort that would shred our social fabric or our Constitution.

California was not a part of this nation when its history began, but we are clearly now the keeper of its future.
