Groovelord Neato posted:she's worth eight times what he is. Only if you include her marital assets. The congressional financial disclosure forms say that Bernie's net worth is a little over $2 million and Pelosi's is a little over $5 million. But, the point was that net worth is a weird measure to use. Under that definition FDR, Bernie Sanders, and Huey Long were all more hostile to the working class than 99% of other people.

Her personal net worth is about $5 million and Bernie's is a little over $2 million, which is what I said. But, the point wasn't the exact ratio of their net worths, the point was that saying someone has inherent disdain for the working class because they are a millionaire is a silly way to measure it. FDR, Bernie, and many other famous populist and left-wing advocates have been millionaires.

The Glumslinger posted:So, is someone gonna tell me how rich you can be before you are an automatically untrustworthy? Is it 5 mil? 10 mil? Whether or not they're "untrustworthy" isn't the question you should be asking. The question is whether or not their wealth/their source of wealth impacts how they vote on important issues like regulating Wall Street or Silicon Valley.

The Glumslinger posted:So, is someone gonna tell me how rich you can be before you are an automatically untrustworthy? Is it 5 mil? 10 mil? there are actually studies that show wealth is correlated to lower empathy, and iirc they show causation because people who become rich show less empathy after than they did before (if it was "a lack of empathy helps you become rich" it would be constant before and after) iirc it's also just correlated with power, when you have more power suddenly you lose empathy for people below you

The Glumslinger posted:So, is someone gonna tell me how rich you can be before you are an automatically untrustworthy? Is it 5 mil? 10 mil? Well, at $10,000,000 you're solidly in the richest 1% of Americans and have the same wealth as 145 median families combined. It seems extremely unlikely that someone with that much wealth would have any basis to understand or connect with those 145 median families. Conversely, why should we expect people who live entirely different lives and live in entirely different worlds than the rest of us to be effective advocates for us?
