Is the raptor more expensive than the Platinum? What about king cab? I feel woefully uninformed about truck equity.

The Raptor can be configured cheaper however unless you order it direct from Ford that way you will never find one - dealers know the target market for those, believe it - and I expect virtually no one does. In any configuration they are far less practical unless your daily drive runs through the Baja desert. Raptors are the kind of truck you don't even need to put a pair of swinging balls on the tow hitch because they're automatically assumed to be there by everyone else.

Or alternately have low deductible comprehensive insurance, which is expensive for cars parked outside and BWM in its own way.

Hot take: why not just have your chauffeur park it at your second home? I mean come on people! He says nothing about the cost of the car in the op. Maybe it was something inexpensive but was reliable for his daily commute, and he is unlikely to find another car he can afford that would be as reliable.

The annual Colorado tradition of 20somethings telling me they are cashing in their 401k to buy new skis for this season has begun. I made it through the night without punching the dude who said this while everyone chatted about how epic of an idea that is.

The last time I heard something was a roofer who cashed it out when he was laid off and I swear he bought a boat. I almost forgot about him until just this moment.

I don't think you need a loan for that should have been a hardship withdrawal. I doubt the guy was maxing contributions if he needed money for that. Anyway paying a medical bill is bad with money, those are the easiest debts to discharge in bankruptcy.

A 401k loan can be easy to justify since you're paying yourself back (and probably making a better return than what the market is currently offering). That is a bummer. Back when I was stupid I had a 401k loan at a job I got laid off from. It's a real swell thing to spend your severance on I tell you what.

Amazon Flex: hoping drivers don’t know math We start by meeting a dystopia resident: quote:After finishing up his day job at a charter school, Sherwin Karunungan heads to a nondescript warehouse in San Francisco that serves as a shipment hub for Amazon.com. In a windowless breakroom, Karunungan presses a single button on his phone, over and over, to request a gig through Amazon Flex. quote:Because workers rely on their own vehicle, pay for their own gas and tolls, and sometimes need to return to the warehouse at the end of the day, a Flex job can feel a bit like playing the slots. And because they’re required to make the deliveries in a narrow window of time, Karunungan jumps up from his chair and hurries to retrieve his orders and load them into his car. quote:On Nov. 1 Amazon raised the minimum wage for all U.S. employees to $15 an hour, a move that was seen as a response to political pressures. The company said it’s also giving raises to every operations and customer-service employee in hourly jobs, including part time and temps. Flex workers are not eligible because they’re contractors. quote:Package runs are timed, and workers are kicked off the system for missing delivery windows, which creates an incentive to run red lights, double-park and go over the speed limit, drivers say. After an assignment, Flex workers are sometimes required to bring goods they were unable to deliver back to the warehouse. The trip is unpaid and can take an hour or more but is necessary to stay in good standing with the company. quote:The study says that within a four-hour block, workers can expect to spend more than an hour going back and forth to the warehouse picking up boxes or returning undelivered ones. This contrasts with other on-demand contract work like ride-hailing, where drivers start and stop the clock anytime and from practically anywhere. quote:Stephen Anthony left his job as a data specialist for T-Mobile in Renton for Amazon Flex because it allows him to spend more time with his daughter. He drops her off at his in-laws’ house on the way to the warehouse and works fewer hours than before. The financial costs of the work aren’t a major concern for him right now. quote:Jodi Lynn Reeves signed up for Amazon Flex in Kansas City, Missouri, after she left her job at a company that collects coins from laundromats and struggled to find steady employment. She says she’d get a buzz when the money from Amazon would appear in her checking account every few days. https://www.seattletimes.com/business/amazon/drivers-for-amazon-flex-can-wind-up-earning-less-than-they-realize/

Houses werent built with garages here, or that people use them as storage instead of car parking because of the mild weather? If you live in a more urban area there may only be on street parking, and you may not even have a reserved spot. You can pay for monthly parking at a large garage, but that's yet another expense that you may not be able to afford or rationalize. Even less built up areas may only have the smallest hints of driveways, where you basically hope that no one illegally parks you in. Of course, this isn't a concern if you've fled to the suburbs.

Houses werent built with garages here, or that people use them as storage instead of car parking because of the mild weather? In SE portland, a lot of houses were built without prior to it being a given that people would own a car. In more recently built neighborhoods, a ton of people don't use them for cars because it doesn't snow much here.
