This strikes me as this timeline's Battle of Savo Island, only with the IJN actually driving their attack home and wrecking a bunch of support elements instead of retreating. Complete with slipping past the destroyer screen.

Also, I'm wryly amused someone literally JUST claimed Maryland as their lucky ship, after it hasn't been seen for nearly a year due to damage... only for it to immediately reappear and take two Long Lances. That's certainly some kind of luck.

Nah. Two torpedoes and shell hits from cruisers and destroyers is probably survivable. Just, uh, don't expect to see her again before like May or June.

Is it wrong that I want the Maryland to square off against the Yamato and come out on top? Or has the Yam sunk already?

EDIT: Just checked the claimed ships list. The Yam has indeed sunk. I feel vaguely cheated but I am not surprised.

IIRC Yamato and either Iowa or New Jersey pretty much sank each other. They had a huge scrap and both sank afterwards before making it back to port.

Yamato bit the bullet this past July because it got torpedo'ed, then Grey forgot to dock it at Rabaul and it went 'round to Milne Bay and got torpedo'ed some more.

Then it limped back to Rabaul only to sink 1 hex away.

Musashi was sunk after a surface action with an Iowa class

I was confused by that combat result with the Maryland until I noticed it was a night combat

... The next few days ar egoing to be fun if you can sally out the BB's in time to catch them. Nicley done Grey! We haven't had a proper slugfest with the Royal Navy lately! Think you'll lose any of the raiders or they can make it back in time to get to Rabaul without issue?

Also your raiders probably have INSANE experiencea t this point.

Riiiiiight, so it's Yamato that limped back while Musashi died in combat.

This campaign is incredible.

In this reality, there are going to be insanely detailed grog games simulating the numerous Battleship vs Battleship engagements that happened during the war, along with different scenarios present in them and alternate universes (like what if the Mushashi ran into the Iowa wihtout having expended most of her big gun ammunition and was at her best in the engagement along with her battle line).

Goons in the alternate timeline are going berserk when Grey Hunter sends a carrier fleet for a surprise raid and it beats the crap out of battleships and how in a WITP American run he managed to down 600+ Japanese fighters in the Marianas in 44.

And Musashi would have had a better chance against the Iowa if the USN didn't deplete the Musashi's combat group's ammo by throwing wave after wave of landing ships and cargo ships ahead of it. Or the Iowa could have been caught limping home if the air wings at Rabaul could figure out how to track down and attack ANYTHING AT ALL.

Alternate timeline where Grey sinks a BB at Pearl Harbor? I don't like this alternate timeline where he save scums.

Although save scumming Dec 7 1941 would be a particular level of Hell. 2 hours of fixing everything wrong with Japan's industry and troop allocation before starting the turn, over and over and over and over

No naval combat, only airstrikes on my ships.

This one we fend off easily.

French battleships are a thing. Weird looking things, but a thing.

Wait, they have a carrier down here? BATTLESHIPS AWAY!

Also, planes go away please.

All of you.

Yeah, if I'd known there was a carrier there, I wouldn't have sallied forth – but these are the risks you take, and I've had it easy until now.

Down goes a heavy cruiser!

This destroyer is in trouble as well!

So, do I call off my ships or go for it? I think the battleships need to come home, but the cruisers can go for the kill!

during the air search phase of the inter-turn processing, search planes with ASW capability can end up detecting a sub (presumed to be surfaced), bombing it, and sinking it, without triggering a full combat replay/combat report.

Yes, I know. The ship was lost at port by bombers bombing it, not during an ASW phase.
