This strikes me as this timeline's Battle of Savo Island, only with the IJN actually driving their attack home and wrecking a bunch of support elements instead of retreating. Complete with slipping past the destroyer screen. Also, I'm wryly amused someone literally JUST claimed Maryland as their lucky ship, after it hasn't been seen for nearly a year due to damage... only for it to immediately reappear and take two Long Lances. That's certainly some kind of luck.

... The next few days ar egoing to be fun if you can sally out the BB's in time to catch them. Nicley done Grey! We haven't had a proper slugfest with the Royal Navy lately! Think you'll lose any of the raiders or they can make it back in time to get to Rabaul without issue? Also your raiders probably have INSANE experiencea t this point.

In this reality, there are going to be insanely detailed grog games simulating the numerous Battleship vs Battleship engagements that happened during the war, along with different scenarios present in them and alternate universes (like what if the Mushashi ran into the Iowa wihtout having expended most of her big gun ammunition and was at her best in the engagement along with her battle line).

No naval combat, only airstrikes on my ships. This one we fend off easily. French battleships are a thing. Weird looking things, but a thing. Wait, they have a carrier down here? BATTLESHIPS AWAY! Also, planes go away please. All of you. Yeah, if I'd known there was a carrier there, I wouldn't have sallied forth – but these are the risks you take, and I've had it easy until now. Down goes a heavy cruiser! This destroyer is in trouble as well! So, do I call off my ships or go for it? I think the battleships need to come home, but the cruisers can go for the kill! Dammit, one of their ASW planes must have gotten lucky!

Yes, I know. The ship was lost at port by bombers bombing it, not during an ASW phase.

10 November 1944 Japan loses an escort (No. 11) to US aircraft near Leyte and a patrol boat (No. 46, ex-destroyer Yugao) to USS Greenling. Mines claim yet another minesweeper—HMS Hydra, off Ostend; towed to Sheerness but not repaired. US ammunition ship Mount Hood blows up at Manus.
