I answered a local craigslist ad looking for backing musicians and received a reply from someone who represented himself as the manager of an amazing hot young blues guitar prodigy, basically the new Kenny Wayne Shepherd. You know the drill, This kid is going places! The kind of talent seen once in a generation! Within a few second of clicking the youtube link in the email it was clear the kid was not in fact going places and had maybe watched a 'Play like Eric Clapton' video or two but not much more and the manager was obviously the kid's overthusiastic father, but the three crappy cellphone videos they'd posted of the lad fumbling through "After Midnight" and "Mustang Sally" at a local Monday night blues jam each had more likes than Haim performing on Saturday Night Live. Hilariously, they hadn't even faked it well, buying exactly half a million likes per video so each one had a total 'liked' number of around 500,003.

I was in a band a few years ago who were obsessed with Making It and the bandleader would fall for all kinds of stupid poo poo: We need a proshoot video, I met a guy in the pub who has “industry contacts” and so on. We played a few gigs to big, empty rooms because playing on a big stage = being a real band. Even if we ended up out of pocket for it. I'm ashamed to say I actually like shredding. Well some of it anyway. But that was... yeah. I wonder if that video of poor man's Yngwie Malmsteen playing 15 uninterrupted minutes of meandering phrygian scales in a single key and tempo was played in front of an audience. Because I didn't hear a single person behind the camera shoot themselves.
